He could easily still be plying his trade in the prem if managers woke up and smelt the coffee!
one of the most natural finishers you will ever see.

a Smashing player,as i said,a natural goalscorer who very rarely misses  the target.when you look at some of the dirt that teams are forking out millions for you just have to laugh

Report tenpins May 4, 2012 9:53 PM BST
Was about to say Les Ferdinand.
Thought Phillips got 27/28.
Some going for a team finishing 7th.
Report morpteh mackem May 4, 2012 9:54 PM BST
phillips hit 30 mark against west ham.
Report Solano1 May 4, 2012 9:55 PM BST
Fair point. Grin

I meant 30 or more. Blush

He's in good company, and that for me (with all due respect to Sunderland) demonstrates his quality, given the quality forwards who have played in better sides and never managed it.

In fact, he was a pain in the arse.

Quinn and phillips were one of the best partnerships of the modern era

What was his best goal Morps?  Chelsea at home?

*Newcastle away excluded.

The Chelsea one for me.
4-0 up at half time Love

Aye, it had the makings of a good side that one ten.

What went wrong? (Serious question).
Report tenpins May 4, 2012 10:07 PM BST
Lack of ambition from the owner mainly, didn`t invest.
We were 2nd in the league at xmas, and we drew 2-2 with Man United without Phillips who was injured.
Went on a bad run after that and finished 7th.
Report Crisp77 May 4, 2012 10:07 PM BST

Lots of things really, but mainly a lack of investment and Reid dismantling the side.

Bob Murray wouldn't sanction the wages for the couple of players we needed to kick on. At the same time, Reid fell out with decent, if not key members of the squad and replaced them with dross, had no idea how to replace Quinn, who I actually think was more under rated than Phillips, and the team spirit gradually evaporated.

In each of the 7th seasons we were flying at Christmas, went on a bad run afterwards and never really recovered from the latter. You could see things weren't right at the time but they were neglected.

As for Phillips, he was a brilliant finisher, but he had so much more than that. The variety of goals he scored was unbelievable, he was capable of 6 yard poaches, 25 yard drives, delicate chips, and scored a lot of good headers for someone of his size. I don't think he'll ever get the credit he deserves because he never really did it for England, which is harsh as he had Shearer and Owen blocking his path at his peak, then changed his game and played much deeper afterwards and never really got the chance he deserved. Iirc he was man of the match in one game but missed a sitter, Darius Vassell came on and scored on his debut and was always picked ahead of him after that.

Remember Paul Walsh when he played for Charlton at Norwich. He was absolutely different class. Legendary Tottenham manager Bill Nicholson was at the match and said it was like watching Harry Houdini.

I can also remember Kevin Phillips giving a similar performance for Watford. Destined then for much better things but amazing he never reached international level.

as a foreigner i was always amazed why he wasnt playing for England on regular basics. dont remember who else you had at his prime times on sheet but i also remember i was always picking him up in many of my  computer games squads.
op is spot on.quality he represents even now at his age just shows how much pure talent he always was
Report OnTheSnaff May 4, 2012 11:19 PM BST
Still an excellent finisher, class players dont lose that, they lost a yard or two of pace but never the nack of hitting the back of the net,
every time i see him come on as a sub for Blackpool he does so well and im often left wondering why he doesn't start,
a quality player who is also a model pro off the pitch.
Report Safc1973 May 4, 2012 11:58 PM BST
One of the finest passers of a ball I've ever seen never mind his finishing. A class act who could have had 50 caps if not in the same era as Owen. Could have done a cracking job in Scholesy's position aswell.
Report cloughandtaylor May 5, 2012 8:17 AM BST
Remember Graham Sharpe of Ladcrooks in his weekly Daily Express artile, tipping Kevin Phillips to be top prem scorer at a top price 80/1.

One of the best tips to have stayed in the memory, still wish i had been on.Sad

One of the great finishers.
