I am a reasonably sensible chap & in life I am reasonably straight forward & especially where money is concerned quite sensible & rational.
But in 30 odd years of punting the 100% reason that I have not won on a regular basis is not because of my judgement it is because of my human nature.Everything in the gambling world is set up to encourage us to be like this.
I do not think that there has ever been a better time to have a bet than there is now.If you could be totally calm, cool & collected.
15 years ago I knew a guy who made his living Pro punting. He used to earn 50 to 100k a year, year in year out.I used to love seeing him fill in his self assesment tax form in when they first came out, because he lived in a 7 bedroom house.Drove a brand new BMW & used to put zero in the taxable earnings box of the form. All 100% legal & above board etc etc
He said that the best thing to happen to him was the advent of Debit card betting. As soon as that became the norm, you could have 20 to 30 accounts with different bookies with the same bank & more importantly you had a totally legitimate way of showing on paper where all your big wodges of cash had come from & then no more Stewards enquiries with the taxman whom in them days would virtually not conceed that Pro punting  could be done.
Anyway I was young footloose & fancy free & used to go racing with him & spent days & weeks watching him in action. He was like Clint Eastwood in his approach to gambling. If you went round to his house or met him in the bookies. It was impossible to know whether he had a pound or a grand on.
Over the years that I knew him.I realized that I had more chance of becoming Chairman of ICI than doing what he did.

He used to spend 12 hours a day with his head in the form book.He would be planning a bet weeks before & then not playing because the price wasn't as he had hoped for.Or a horse hadn't dropped out at the 5 day decs etc.He could spend 100 hours on a race & not play. How he did it was an inigma to me.
Anyhow,he was a good m8 & he knew that he could trust me etc.So in theory I was
in a great position.I didn't have the discipline to do what he did if it had been 20 times less time consuming & boring. But I used to keep him charged with lots of coffee & fetch the groceries etc. Then when it was time to punt the Horse.once his cash was on,my cash was soon to follow.
I have got an old Diary that I used to keep 1 year that I was in the loop etc.I had more winning bets than you can shake a stick at.The Beauty about these bets were that he used to bet on the bigger the price (Value)the bigger the bet.
I am sorry if I am rambling & I will get to my main point soon.

Anyway I went from holding my hand out for a big return when once in a blue moon I got a Super Hienz or a lucky placepot. To regularly winning 1000's on a single plotted & sensible bet etc.I knew then that all I had to do was follow my Fairy Godfather & I was in clover.
I was m8's with him for nearly 4 years & he never made less than 50k & mostly over 100k a year.He never actually did an hours paid work in the time I knew him.Anyway he moved away & I basically didn't keep in touch with him because although I had a few really cool years doing nothing much other than doing a few errands for him & days racing etc.The true sum of my profits over those years was more or less nothing. He tried to coach me in his Art.
I was brought up with Horses & I can honestly say that I was as good a judge at picking a winner out as he was.I actually knew 10 times more about horses than he did.
His secret weapon was his accountant like approach to gambling.Totally no doubt in my mind.If he had been an expert at virtually anything else I would have seen my chance I would have patiently learned from him,he was a real great guy & would have schooled me for sure.He used to enjoy having what I suppose was someone to mentor. It must have made it a little more bearable having an enthuisiastic helpful m8 come goffer on the team.Because I can honestly say that the work that he did was the most boring long drawn out job I have ever seem anyone do.He had a pretty cool life in most respects. But it totally consummed his life & looking back now I think he was under paid for his efforts for sure.

Now I guess the job is alot easier to do today with everything on the net etc.But it isn't a job still that I would want.Anyone who does make it pay has my total respect & deserves there rewards as much as anyone.

I do not punt the horses anymore, other than the occasional stray fiver 2 or 3 times a year. The reason being that I realized that it didn't matter how much help I ever got I was doomed because on my way in to pick up my winnings I would just have a quick fiver on trap 6 & then an hour later I would leave with nothing.

Now I am lucky in the respect that I have never gambled myself into trouble.I have always just about managed to keep it from ruling my life.
I am really philosophical about all the aspects & have had great fun betting & I honestly do not regret any of it.
But the 1 thing that really wrankles me now that I am more sensible & settled in my ways.Is that even today when I just bet smaller & mostly on football.I still return to that hopeless mug punter that I have more or less always been.
No sooner do I put £100-00 in my Betfair account does it turn into monopoly money & I cannot make it seem the same as a £100-00 in my pocket.
I used to do a grand in the bookies & then 2 hours latter be moaning about a bag of Sugar costing 67p.

Anyway I think that if anyone is still reading & hasn't given up the will to liveI am coming to my point.

There are some pretty shrewd decent guys on this forum.People who obviously know there stuff & do alright.
Alot of these people go out of there way to help anyone who asks. But virtually all advise is about selections & nothing at all about the most important stuff that most normal Joe punter could really do with.
You see the occasional thread that will have a few tips about Discipline,Chasing, etc etc.I have picked up a few helpful tips on here that has helped for sure.
But I kind of think that we all have little things that we do to help us not go mad,but we never discuss it together in detail.

Cause I can tell you now,if I got my time again. If I had a chance to spend time with my m8.I would have spent every moment trying to learn the approach etc,From that I could work the rest out for myself for sure.

All you good people out there that like to share your knowledge.Surely you must know exactly what I mean.I kind of think that you either have it or you dont.In fact I'm sure of it.
But if you like to help people & can add any rational or cunning ways of being focussed.Staying Clint Eastwood & not turning Clive Dunn (Dads Army).I just think that I am so near but yet so far away.

What we need on this forum is a Confucious type figure that could teach us all the Head stuff that 99% of us are missing.

Congratulations to anyone that has read this start tro finish.I do ramble on abit.before anyone points this out.

so what your saying is that people dont get excited when they have a bet now(the new breed). bullshit
Report SHAPESHIFTER April 25, 2012 10:20 PM BST
loui, I can't speak for others but there are times that I am "business as usual".  It's almost unemotional, especially when laying (essentially hoping a result WON'T happen).  It definitely doesn't happen when I lay to trade or trade.

But when I put the effort in, really focus to find a profitable play, I'll be in there like I'm in the front row.

The "middle" I go is that if I'm off to the pub to watch something (or even at home) where I want to take in the 90 minutes without a laptop in hand, I'll have a flutter at most and hope it covers dinner and pints.
Report duffy April 25, 2012 10:26 PM BST
People do get excited but it doesn't help you one bit because it is that excitement that grips hold of you and it is what gets you in trouble, if you are someone who bets by way of obtaining your fix then you are up against it, yes there is a new breed who probably couldn't tell one horse from another and don't have stories to tell about the good old days in smoked filled bookies but simply use it as a money making opportunity and probably don't even consider what they are betting on as a horse or a football match but more as numbers on a page.
Report Real Deal April 25, 2012 10:52 PM BST
I understand you quin. Not wishing to encourage you in any way m8.But I guess you are in the totally best place to be in my view.1 because I think the maths of all of this is more important than being an Oracle on a particular Sport can be as bad as it can be good.I do not make up the the stuff about generally in racing Trainers & Jockeys are the worst judges.Ask anyone in the racing Industry they will tell you the same.Obviously the top top Trainers & Jockeys would be,but because of there success etc they do not attempt to a judge. They dont have to,it's a horrible job whether you do it for fun, love or money.I know when I spent a month or whatever trying to convince everyone to buy them selves some tenners for fivers on my old heroe Dancing Brave I still get reminded occasionally to this day.You tip 9 winners they will remember that the bloody 10th 1 lost.

But most importantly if your new to this, thats precious.Take your time do everything totally thought out & do not pick up any bad habits, thats the really hard bit.Once you become a mug punter you are virtually doomed. It must be easier to come here with a cleen run at stuff.
I'm 51 & it seems to me like we were writing on chalk board betting slips it was that long ago.I know that I am probably to late to totally change my spots. But I still enjoy having a punt & many diferent ways of doing stuff online now.
I've been to Heathrow hundreds of times but still try occasionally to find a different way to go.
I really dont know if you understand what I am trying to say but I arent a pro forumite etc.Dont really know if I've got the right attitude to keep sensible & sane to be honest.
Give you 2 quick examples.

methaphor or whatever he was called.Just popped on here to say mug thread mug watchers or something like that.
Maybe another planet that I may live, but I check out a few threads very occasionally.Check my total replies it works out about 4 or 5 replies a week max.
Now I can totally understand anyone who checks out a thread, doesn't like it,dissagrees maybe even thinks the person creating it is a nut job.But if that aforesaid person isn't unsavoury, grooming us all for the sex trade or trying to sell us something. Why would you have to something just annoying & rude.I dont think I get that.I can only sumise that it's because he wouldn't dare do it to your face, maybe he has just done his whole bank on Barcelona.Or Small p e n i s what ever it's called.I would just read 2 or 3 lines & think nut job to myself & quietly leave.Go find a new thread to read.Thats what usualy do if I'm board now I read 1 thread last year 100,s of pages religously it was like reading a thriller in parts cause you were months behind knowing what there challenge was & you could remember a freak result days before you would find out if they had dodged it or not.One guy was betting major 1000's every day & I was getting where I was worry about his bank as much as he was.

Last point before I sling my hook as I havn't been in  bed since early Tuesday. I have spoken to nice sweet people on here.I promise you I have not disbelieved a single thing anybody has said.I may be old school. But I was brought up & am raising my 4 children with some basic but totally important things. One is the importance of manners & probably more importantly the importance of truth & honesty.I havn't & wouldn't ever smack my children in any way.But they can be put on the step or grounded stupid stuff whatever. But have always told my children that lying about a mistake or anything they have done wrong is worse than the actual offence they may have done.We are talking about my daughter cutting my lads hair when she was 5ish so silly stuff etc etc.
Anyway in my long winded & drawn out way I mention this because someone on here said Quite politely which probably stung more "nice story but I aint buying it." well I am really tired & I might not be at my best at the moment. But I am slightly offended by the comment. You cannot buy it anyway it's not for sale.I was not drunk,I'm tea total, that doesn't mean that I am a recovering alcoholic.I havn't drunk since a teenager.Having a bet is my g & t.Anyway I am not being a big time charlie,I looked back on it & thought I mentioned being a pillock & a pratt.Think I might have forgotten to mention that I a recovering waster.I was good at that for years. Now other than the big draw which bought a new motor it wasn't a house.I think I was as down about my wastrel ways as I was up about myself.I know not many of you will come from Lincoln but if you did & had ever gone in the best bookies in town then you would have known my lovely & sadly missed Coral.
That little dog spent more time on her company bean bag in that betting shop than most humans have ever done.Thats not bragging either, could be dog abuse in these political correct days. Can somebody confirm that we  used to walk round with 3 or 4k in are pockets all the time.Nowadays if you have more than £1500-00 on you you can be asked to prove where it came from with all this laundering behaviour.Youngies dont realize that there was as much cash if not more in those days.

Quick example that van was H REG 1990.it was as stated £9995 inc 15% Vat.The same size model Transit Short Wheel base van 22 years later was on sale same ford dealership before xmas £9999+ 20% Vat.So in £20 odd years up no more than 20%.Insurance in some cases is now actually cheaper.

All I am trying to point out is that I was telling a happy punting story that bhappened 20 odd years ago.Context being that it was a bit more fun & definately more exciting them 20 odd years before.I thought I slated myself more than bigged myself up.
I didn't poport myself to be a budding **** Francis in waiting.I said to Heather this morning when she came down about 6am that had just written what me seemed like an essay for the first time since leaving school in 1977.I also said it was most probablly my longest.I can honestly tell you that other than a few prices being maybe the wrong way round or something like that it was true.Wasn't like I was claiming to be James bond It was just the highs & lows of a normal joe punter.

Sorry judge we missed the 8-55 at kempton, that was me rattling & rambling again. But couldn't tip a tortiouse & hare race nowadays m8.

PS.I did win a few quid on the footie tonight, was just needing 1 goal in the Real Madrid game to win £100-00.Luckily It was posted on a little thread I started in Multiples.Posted hours before any of the matches started just in case there are anymore doubting Thomases lurking. So I was listening to the game while typing away.So I am generally waiting on a result or 2 when on here.

All my mindless gambling til I stopped the crazy stuff when I had children. They were the greatest calming effect that I have ever had. Also my soon to wife has no problems with me having a bet or 2.That actually makes me more responsable as wouldn't abuse that trust.
So I my interest now with different attitudes to gaining a mental edge is really because being more responsible in life gets you steps closer & anything else you can glean from others cannot hinder.
By the way I'm totally cool with the covering the sreen behaviour now.the one word at a time got me smiling m8,got to admit a bit to that myself as well. RealDeal, can I just say this has been a wonderful read from start until now and I hope it goes on until I die. I'm just under 40 but been an "on the nose" gambler for years after my dear old Dad got me into the horses when I was 5 years old.

He passed away 10 years ago, aged 51 (not that I'm saying youre about to die or anything!) and reading your stuff reminded me of him so much that I'm not ashamed to say the old tear ducts have been welling up. I loved to hear him talk of the "olden days", with the tales of the betting shop and dreamy images of the greats. His were tales of seeing the likes of Arkle no less and betting in shillings FFS! I remember him putting my first few bets on - Zongalero in the '79 National, Henbit in the Derby the year after, and I was hooked. I remember horses like Kris and Shergar and Dancing Brave as being God-like and my passion has never died. I suppose there was never much hope for me having discipline given my "breeding" and basically being a gambler since the age of 5.

My bets got bigger when I started working and was still single - they were verging of 30% of my yearly salary at one point which looking back (and obviously for most sane people) was just plain dangerous. It took meeting the right girl having a kid and getting married to settle me and my gambling down. I now bet very small stakes but still have problems with "oh I'll just throw a couple of quid on this next race", while waiting for my main bet of the day/evening. So stupid.

However, and getting to my point (seems like we may have at least rambling in common!), after reading some of the stuff on this thread today I greened out on my "Real Madrid to qualify" bet tonight and guaranteed a profit which 100 times out of 100 before today I would never have dreamed about doing.

Thank you for quite possibly the best thread ever seen - certainly on the footy forum and maybe on any forum

great thread realdeal,
reading your op about that guy with his clinical approch to betting reminded me of a bet i did years ago, paddy powers had a special in the weeks leading up to cheltenham for total winning distance for all the races combined,i think there was only 3 days of racing that time, anyway saw they were offering under over and between a certain amount of lenths, saw the over was unbelievably low so started doing my research, ground soft to heavy so more chance of bigger winning distances and the likes, the hardest part was getting the money down
anyway to make a long story short travelled to every paddy powers in my county putting a few hundred euro a time on the bet thinking they were going to realise they're mistake soon enough,
ended up having nearly about 2 grand on it to win maybe 16 hundred, biggest bet of my life but was certain it could'nt lose, 1st day got maybe 18 lths,2nd day got maybe 25 lths,so for the 3rd day only needed about 5 lths from like 7 races, you can guess what happened, came up short by about 1 lth after a freak no of 1/2 and 1/4 lth winners,i was gutted for weeks and did'nt tell anyone,i learned a harsh lesson about gambling that day,

Wow Arazi, could have done with speaking with you tomorrow m8,but i feel another Ramble coming on.Give me a minute m8 just got to say this before I forget.

Got you Iceking, thank you m8,no offence taken at all I promise.Total honesty is only good m8.I agree that my spelling, punctuation & grammer will always be suspect on here m8.I would explain this as probably best pub talk if you here me.I am normally multi-tasking with footy bets etc.As this isn't a job application form or whatever I kind of deem it's sort of banter.Being slightly old school I would deem a personal letter to yourself would require perhaps a little more attention to detail etc.I can tell you I have really neat hand writing, only use fountain pens, decent quality writing paper & never writing on both sides of the paper etc.I swear like a trooper in the company of my m8's,but never in front of the Children or if Ladies are presant.I am also reasonably well spoken. My lazy approach on forums are mainly because 1 am not to the keyboard borne. But 2 more importantly you can go to the trouble of writing correctly doing your spell check etc & get a reply in text speak thay 50% is harder to decipher than cockney ryming slang.3 general mental exhaustion etc. Saying all of that I totally get what you meant tough m8,because if your rambling or shooting straight it's about the content & some stuff has obviously balls to it,when alot of what you read is obvious bulls s h i t.I hope your write about what you said is thats how it's meant m8.Anyway Cushty thanks again.

Wow Wow Wow,this isn't yet a HOLY GRAIL the betting type yet.Maybe a cliche who knows I do not really care. One thing I know already within 24 hours of starting this is this feels a fairly sane calm & collected place to idle away the odd hour or 2.This I totally claim no credit for.Possibly by starting off a bucket is half full type thread & not a Bucket half empty one.Maybe that was it.
But it just seems chilled out, cool & it seems that no one is to bothered about the size of peoples Banks or knocking folk down etc. It's really strange on here sometimes about how everyone seems so bothered about not just how well they do themselves but then how badly everyone else is.
Bit like that sketch on the Fast show," I'M SO CONSIDERABLY RICHER THAN YOOOUUU" you will only get it if you have seen the show.
I think surely when you have had your day good or bad it doesn't hurt to feel happy for other to have had an earner to.

Anyway I have solved a small step in my improvement to betting all be it by chance.I am on a little challenge with myself quietly tucked away in the multiples,Todays bets were 8 lay 0-0's £236-05 on to win £326-18.The odds were only 1-4 these were as I said earlier posted well before kick off etc.Anyway I am only working Fri/Sat/Sun for the next 3 or 4 weeks.Brilliant loads of time to have a raging run at tuning my wicked ways down a smigeon. If it is entirely possible, who knows eh,I've got no idea, myself honestly.
All I can say is when I fall over I  am straight back up again. When you fall off your Horse you get straight back on again obviously as long as your not going to Hospital I digress.

The problem I am over coming now is that I get my bets on & instead of hovering over the sceen waiting for suspends, which just gets you racing to bet bet bet.Now early doors I know but I come over to the forum & Ramble.Today The 1st bet started at 11-30am last being the Real game.Virtually any time that I wasn't with my family,I was on here with new m8's,well you know what I mean dont you.

Here is how I see it in this game nowadays.Bookies have always been pretty ruthless greedy outfits doing nothing at all for punters or racing ever ever. Now I think that they have sunk to lower & lower depths.

They have as mentioned turned there once strictly regulated & sensibly licenced high st bookies into gloryfied Mini Casino's.All of this under the tender caring Tony Blair regime. It used to make me sad enough seeing Guys every week late Thursday night &  Friday night blowing some of there wages on there way home to the wife & children. Now it is more or less the same but on speed. They will come through the doors & before the first minutes up the first £20-00 has been fed into the machine if they are still going 30 minutes latter it nearly a result 9 times out of 10 they go home pottless. What the hell do they tell there wives & how do they feed there Children. If that isn't bordering on dealing drugs what is.It is a drug to an increasing amount of people. To children who do not get fed properly how much worse is it to him blowing his cash on whacy baccy.A couple of pence on there share price.Thousands of households in poverty because of them horrible machines. The bookies treat there staff like slaves on long hours minimum wage & how long do you think it will be before they are all unstaffed like check outs in Supermarkets blah blah blah.

I am kind of hoping that this is just like the honeymoon period on here slightly,so that I just spend a pleasant hour a day or something.Because I can see my very understanding Lady not standing this to long.

Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed reading this thread.

Reading your betting shop tales have brought memories flooding back, some really good, some truly horrible. Like yourself I wouldn't swap it for anything. I'm only 27, but have been betting in LBO's since I was 16 when there was no machines, fogs of smoke and plenty of characters about.

The life of a gambler (I'm sorry, but 99% of people on here are gamblers) can be likened to nothing else and I too believe that it is true that for anyone to go pro you would need to dedicate so much of your life to form study and catching breaking news that you would sacrifice any enjoyment that the 'job' should bring.

A handful of times a year I really get interested about a potential plot on the all weather or see that they have finally moved a greyhound that i've been watching to the trap it needs to get a clean break to the first bend...I would spend so many hours on the days leading up to the race studying the form of the other entries to gauge what sort of price my selection should be and if there any potential dangers...should I put a cover bet on.
More often than not when I put the groundwork in I end up making £1,000's from my work, but in the wake of it all I feel like shiit when I realise how little time that I've spent with my girlfriend, sitting on the sofa transfixed on my laptop screen pretending to listen to whatever it is that she's banging on about.

More often than not when I have a big win, i'd start acting like I am untouchable throwing £100 bets at something that I have looked at for 3 minutes. Before I know it half of my profit that I put hours of study into would have been blown with in an hour.

It's just not worth it to me. It can be for others it depends what you're after in life. But I have won and lost enough money/jobs/friends over the past 10 years because of my actions and stuff that has happened out of my hands to know that it's worth nothing if you don't have genuine people around you to share it with. The actions that you must take to be a pro can only push people away.

Anyway, I thought this thread was brilliant and just thought I'd add my 2 pence worth. I echo what a previous poster said in that you should consider writing a book as I was gripped to this last night. All the best Real Deal.

Either that or is just a bad loser who has just blown his £3 Bank.
With regards to writing a Novel.I am just a Taxi Driver & I promise you that I have absolutely no plans of writing any books m8.What would you call it ?."Diary of a serial Loser".
That isn't a feel sorry for me quote,it's just a summation of a long & eventful gambling career.I have said that I dont really regrett to much of it.My take on it now is that the highs definately outwiegh the lows.
I really love the highs though, they are amazing.I won £2600 from a fiver 2 weeks ago & then another 1200 or 1300 in the 3 days after that.(Before the snipers start. It was all on here & not aftertimed etc.)
I had that money out of my account & frivourously spent within hours of drafting it out of my account.
I am trying to increase the days like that, because they are totally why I & many of the people on this thread do this.
I have absolutely no gripes with a single person on Betfair.I hope each day that we all put a + in the book. That surely is what this is all about.
I am a big lump of a bloke & look a fairly scary chap.My brother is a little Guy who used to be a Point to Point jockey etc.
I havn't had a fight since I was 6,He used to be in a dust up every Friday night. Not being a drinker might help. But my point is that, when I go out in to town,or when I am out working taking 8 drunken musclemen home I almost always never bump into sreaming mad folk who want to tear my head off etc.
So I do not understand why a complete stranger would just appear from nowhere & start screaming obcenities & wishing me a terrible end.
I will totally understand if no body replies or comments to anything I put on here.
To be honest I am more surprised than anyone on here that anyone is interested in any of my drivel on hear.
But surely,if you think that I'm a numpty or a c**t then just dont comment or read.
I dont want to upset anybody,I dont want to make anybody wild.If I have upset you in any way I'm sorry etc.Just ignore me, I'll soon get fed up.Sad

Like anything in life if you really want something you have to go out and get it, nothing comes easy. hard work = results like anything in life. Many people are lazy, everyone wants to be rich bit not everyone wants to work hard for it. A lot of people lack motivation, and many desperate people (good people) resort to gambling thinking they will make there fortunes here. It is sad how it can separate families and it is looked down upon. My view is that it is exactly the same as the share market. If you know nothing about the share market and start throwing money around your just as bad off as gambling. As long as someone has hope (and money) they will keep gambling. It is a bad addiction. Especially when you lose control and lose everything from family to property. I myself havn't been through that and I hope I never do. I am still young and my view is to make some extra cash to pay for some finer luxuries. I just hope it does not seriously take over. Good luck to anyone who makes money at gambling, but I really don't believe that studying the form book for 12 hours a day is the answer. All that will give you is eyestrain and one humdinger of a headache, it wont help you make any money. The form has already been studied on your behalf - the odds tell you who has the best form, they are called favourites and unfortunately they don't always win.

It is the written or visual of previous events that has to be summed up with a view on a risk/reward scenario that may occur in the future in which different interpretations may be taken and the skill of the person putting the right price on them in the long term will decide whether or not monetary gain will happen

One fallacy imho is the setting of targets, whether they be Daily, weekly, etc.

What you are saying in effect is that on a certain day you might have identified three bets that you want to make and the 1st one wins so its game over and stumps drawn, now the remaining two events might be even better opportunities and yet because of a predetermined strategy that has NO effect upon the outcome of these events prevents you from backing them, by the same token, if these lose, you might have another couple of bets(not as well researched!!) because of the same method.

Only the odds and circumstances of the event you are betting on should determine whether a bet is struck or not, not on the financial circumstances of bets that have been made previously

I, pesonally couldn't do it. I stick to football, read
everything, everything, and work out where the market is going,

I said though that this was more or less 15 years ago.More or less before the start of the great on-line revolution.
I'll give you an example. He used to record every National Hunt race from the racing channel. He had a massive library of videos going back to the start of the racing channel.

When he had a race in mind he would be taking in the 1st entries, these would have sometimes 300 possible starters. That's when his ears would prick up to a possible interest. When the 5 day (that day might be wrong, remember I am now out of touch with racing etc)But anyway, then often at that point he would know if it was a likely play.He would have checked his fancy's last I dont know not at least 10 runs.Sometimes watching certain races more than once.He used to spend fortunes on that form book that always had the official ratings etc in.I think it was "Fineform" not timeform. It is the book that you will always see in a Racehorse trainers kitchen guaranteed. They always have there head in it when they are having breakfast.
Anyway he would be cross referencing different stuff, making notes etc.He would have the days befores racing on in the kitchen.A note book at the table & he would spend hours doing other stuff, like making that nights meal,or just talking s*it with whoever, while alway having 1 ear on the telly. Then he'd say,one minute just need to watch this race or replay that.He would then just go scibble something down & then he would start cutting veg again i.e.

Also at any point in any of this something would happen & it could mean a cross through that particular horse or race.

When the Overnight decs were up was normally when it was most likely whether or whether not he was playing.Normally he would be hoping that certain horses were still in as he had put a pencil over them,so obviously he wanted them in to make value in the race.Quite often he would be wanting a certain horse or maybe 2 or 3 not to run.He wouldn't play if a certain trainer was still in with a possible unexposed horse. Many things, more than I could be a r sed to remember. You can say all this is done for you.Which is true, but even though he obviously listened to others. He would ultimately only back his own judgements.I remember him winning over £30k from something like 32x£1 placepots at Ascot. He would look at a card where he may have 2 fancy's i.e.He may not back them because of the price etc,but if he had say 2 major interests he already had 2 bankers. He might them have a look at the other 4 races. He wouldn't be looking what would be placed,he would be putting a line through as many as didn't interest him. Then I would be hoping that we were going to be on.But he would say to many tricky races & that would be it.

I would be gutted, cause tomorrows a week when you were wanting a bet.But saying that he would be playing, then he wouldn't generally put more than £40-00 on a placepot.Normally no more than 32 lines.Which to me is tiny.I used to do 4000x5p sometimes. Now cause of tote-direct etc minimum unit stake is 10p.
He never played big on placepots because I think that he considered them more as an interest bet.Just remembered that he had a big telly & video placed strategically so that he could see it while in the bath. You see his life was comsumed with racing racing racing. (By the way I never saw or wanted to see him in the bath) before anyone says anything.
He always went abroad a couple of times a year.Obviously out of season etc.He religously went to that Punchestown festivel of racing,as a lot of plots were pulled off there.

I feel for you m8.I unfortunately aren't a great guy to advise you on curing that one.Because if I could I would be doing it by a pool somewhere nice & hot.
All that I can think of to say (You'll know I dont normally struggle to string stuff together)is to take time to get your sensible bets together.Place them well before the start. Then either watch them with no funds available or if it's a single bet, just do something else to take you mind off the betting behaviour for long enough to be cool.
Coming on the forum definately works for me.I get on a long ramble & rant in this thread & I forget about the bet just about completely.Sometimes to the point of missing the next bet I had planned.Any thing that just calms you down must be the answer m8.
It's kind of like fighting & I put the fact that I have never had one.Thats because I dont drink.Just think about how many scrappers that you know in your life. Then think how many are on the sauce when they do it.99% of them unless they are Bullies wouldn't kick somebody in the head soba. But a couple of pints of Wifebeater & they can be animals.

The point I am trying to make is that if you are soba & treat every bet as if it is the first of the day, clean slate & all that stuff then it's got to be better than placing one when your adrenalin is coursing etc.

When I'm fired up with my Gambling frenzy running at full pace think that a bet that starts in 5 minutes is a long time.
But when I am chilled, like now I have just been putting stuff on for Saturday.Just having a smoke or taking the dog for a walk can be enough for me.
This forum is the best though.

I have a bit of a Challenge thing going on in Multiples at the moment. It was actually started by my m8 Bazza. But I am just messing about with mostly correct score multiple lays etc.But the thing is for me to school myself on patience, discipline etc.I go off track a little every now & again. But I am definately teaching myself new stuff & steadily I have built up £100-00 up to over £300-00,it would have been £400-00 if 1 more goal in the Valencia game. But this one has been going for over a week,I am still going.I havn't also had any lairy bets as well in that time & although it isn't a million quid yet. That isn't a problem, because the whole point is the steady behaviour.I will at some point crash.I am mostly dodging bullits. When I crash I will load up again & keep trying.

There is I can feel quite a cool buzz about doing it at 1mph instead of a 100mph.Still not convinced that I can keep it up.But hey ho,you have to keep trying or give up.

Definately though & I would say the coolest thing about my betting has always been what I always do when I have had a tickle.I withdraw abot 90- to 95% of it out real quick.(If you have a paypal account.I have a way of getting your cash in your bank & ready to spend within 24 hours as well)I will advise if anybodies interested.Anyway I get my cash out,as I did for about 4k on the day before Good Friday this year.
I transfered £600-00 into Heathers account, the same into Heathers Mum.This meant that I could withdraw £900-00 straight away.£900-00 the following day.So there is nearly half the cash safe. You see I start treating it like it's in danger of vanishing, which it most probably would be.Next I paid a £675 Fishing trip to Whitby.I paid BT,O-2,Council tax, bought some fishing kit on ebay all on line.Sent Heather into Town with the kids. She filled 2 trolleys at Tesco's,Bought them a Maccy D,bought some cinema tickets,an expensive pair of footy boots for my lad,one of those steam cleaner things for the house.Nicked my m8's car for 10 minutes & filled it up with Diesel £40-00) cause he had done a favour & wouldn't take anything for it.I had it all well & truelly spent within hours of getting it.

It was fooking great. This was all stuff that I would have done anyway, but it made the cash safe & everything bought was a free gift as far as I see it.I hate buying really over priced stuff with my hard earnt wages.I have had some kinky stuff in my time. Not kinky kinky, just cushty stuff.I can honestly say I have bought most of it with decent draws from the bookies.I know that I have done many times more than I won etc.But that's like saying putting your saved ciggy money in a jar when you stop.Everyone says it.I bet it's never been done.

Oh no the kids are getting up & I'm still here.I'm out working tonight as well.Off to bed now.Good luck everyone especially liverpool89,keep your chin up & dont be to hard on yourself m8.Wink

Discipline in betting... is being talked about as a seperate entity to discipline in life.
Track your life from the age of 2, have you been punctual? not off sick? compliant to your teachers/bosses? did you do your homework on time? did you pass your exams with structured revision?, did you save for a luxury or did you borrow?

Discipline isn't something you can switch on or off its something that's been learned over a lifetime, if you've not got it you need to live it for a good few years which to the undisciplined sounds a bit too much like hard work, at 51 its too late for you, be content with being a entertaining character.

Don't follow your logic and assumptions.

Basically anyone who has been successful on BF has bought with them a package of skills, some of the most successful would bring one or more of programming, stats, sports, maths, bookmaking, hard work, fast fingers, discipline,  etc etc. All have a unique skills package that will be profitable over a period of time until someone else skills package squeezes them out of the market, the 90% unsuccessful will have a package of skills that aren't honed to a high enough standard and should invest a few thousand hours refining their skills.

Discipline is only one of the many skills available.
Report ShirleyKnot April 27, 2012 10:09 AM BST

Exactly.
99.99% of punters gamble for the adrenalin rush.
You get it just thinking about a bet.
You get it reminising over old Derby horses like 'The Brave'.
I used to read the Racing Post from cover to cover.
Spot the value, plan the bet, then the donkey in front falls infront of the pick, and it's the one way ticket to Palookaville.

For what its worth,I'll impart a little knowledge.
Horse racing ain't straight. ( shock horror ) Gambling stables, laying one out for a big handicap....only they are in the know.
Football is the worst betting medium of them all.Bookmakers make more prohets out of football, than any other sport.

No,golf, golf betting is the place to be.

156 players,ranging in price from 7/1 fav to 1,000/1.
Now,you have to watch it. You have to know who is playing well. Which courses suit certain players. Who is value, and who not to touch with a barge pole. But if you can't get yourself into a winning position after Four days, then you really shouldn't be gambling at all.

Take this very week, for example. BALLENTINES

Victor Dubuisson...£20 @ 48's. Played well last week,coming into form,shoot -4 on day One.
Laid off £60 @ 8.6.

ZURICH CLASSIC

Steve Stricker....£30 @ 26's. Won here before. Most consistent player on the Tour. Shoots -6 on day One. laid off £50 at 7.2.

Trust me, football is one of the better sports to bet on if you know what you are doing.  I have spent 1 year and around 3-4k learning what to do on betfair.
Discipline, knowing when to bet and when not to bet, self-restraint when you lose and lot's of practice/patience is required.
Tennis is also a great sport because it is only 1 person vs another.  I admittedly know very little about tennis but after a month of playing in the tennis markets I have managed to start turning a profit.
My above profit was 6 days, not bad for a week.  The problem is stopping gambling and knowing when not to bet.
I lost around £190 on the Valencia vs Atl Madrid semi, because I bet too heavily and was not watching the match - a spur of the moment bet when I knew it shouldn't have been.  That wiped out my most profitable day - I was up £215 by that point and obviously my ego got in the way.  Ended the day £35 up and could barely sleep so was playing poker till late.
Oh number 1 important rule is mind - you must be well rested and not spend too long on here.

Armed with my satnav and a list of shops and postcodes I have been doing the rounds loading up.  Pulled this one postcode off the list and put it in the satnav only to show up at their head office today.  The list doesn't say its the head office.  Thought its probably not a good idea to waltz in and try to get my bets on there and I would have likely never come out either for that matter.  If they had known I was within 50 feet of that place they probably would have shot me.

One thing that hasn't been said is the endless amount of events and how you select your markets and how you bet them, there as some good passages in this book

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/aug/21/tyranny-choice-renata-selecl-review

In a society geared towards the individual, and dominated by consumerism and celebrity, we are constantly encouraged to choose a better life for ourselves. The weight of each choice and the super-abundance of options can cause crippling anxiety and we defer to others to make the right choices for us. When we do get what we want, fulfilment is swiftly replaced by dissatisfaction and desire for a better option

Each day we face multiple decisions on what to back, how much, what meeting, what Match, what market on which match with the physical impossibility of proper study of all markets involved.

Learning how to summarize is a necessity, spending more time on reaching conclusions on past events leads to far less time spent on trying to assess an event
Report zilzal1 April 27, 2012 10:45 PM BST
This probably sums it up better

In one landmark experiment, conducted in an upmarket grocery store in California, researchers set up a sampling table with a display of jams. In the first test they offered a tempting array of 24 different jams to taste; on a different day they displayed just six. Shoppers who took part in the sampling were rewarded with a discount voucher to buy any jam of the same brand in the store. It turned out that more shoppers stopped at the display when there were 24 jams. But when it came to buying afterwards, fully 30% of those who stopped at the six-jam table went on to purchase a pot, against merely 3% of those who were faced with the selection of 24.

Expectations have been inflated to such an extent that people think the perfect choice exists
The researchers repeated the experiment with chocolate as well as student essay topics and found similar results. Too much choice, concluded Sheena Iyengar of Columbia University and Mark Lepper of Stanford, is demotivating. Others have since come up with similar results from experiments with writing pens, gift boxes, coffee and even American 401(k) pension plans. (It is not all that way: German researchers, by contrast, found that shoppers were not put off by too much choice, whether of jams, chocolates or jelly beans—though this may be down to Germany’s price-conscious shoppers and the sheer dreariness of the country’s supermarkets.)

As options multiply, there may be a point at which the effort required to obtain enough information to be able to distinguish sensibly between alternatives outweighs the benefit to the consumer of the extra choice. “At this point”, writes Barry Schwartz in “The Paradox of Choice”, “choice no longer liberates, but debilitates. It might even be said to tyrannise.” In other words, as Mr Schwartz puts it, “the fact that some choice is good doesn’t necessarily mean that more choice is better.”

What a truly fascinating thread this is, so interesting to read.

Real Deal I apreciate your reply! You talk a massive amount of sense, some I havent thought about before and some I am slowly learning myself. I think what you say is right the buzz of building slowly is good especially after you put a consistant run together and start seeing your bank build because its like a reward for your patience, I am getting there slowly but surely, no doubt some of the stuff I have thread in this thread has already helped me.  Lets hope your good streak upto £300 continues! I see you got also got burnt in the Valencia game.. I had both to score in that one, was gutted.

As for doing things to take your mind off it, that is absolutely spot on the worst thing I and i am sure any other gambler/Trader can do is place a bet with emotion and I think that is the biggest problem like you say in your opening post that it is human nature! I look forward to seeing this thread continue and reading every new post!

The form book won't have been "Fineform" that was just a system (an overmarketed one!).  I'm guessing it was Superform?  I had a lot of success using their form book and miss it a lot.  They had a unique approach to assessing race times that basically was the same as the Beyer/Mordin/modern day Raceform approach though expressed differently and ahead of it's time UK wise.  Only went wrong when they got lazy at updating the standard times.

Or maybe Raceform?  Which is what I have to use now, albeit as a downloaded database...

highs and lows

Christmas week, I got 2 horse racing tips from two friends of mine(in the know).  One was in England, during the day (won bf sp 26.6), and the other was in Dundalk, Ireland at 9pm(lost bf sp 2.70).  I backed both horses in online and a few euros in the bookie shop.  I decided to do a super yankee on here as I fancied three other ones.  Here is the running order of the five selections;
1-won 26.6
2-won 8.0
3-2nd 5.0
4-won-13.2
5-ultra cool 9pm dundalk- unplacedCry

Before the last selection ran I was totting up the what ifs? and I realised I was collecting €2000+ for a €28 bet on the 4 results so far.  I was in my house with a mate and my Siberian Husky(who gets very excited when I do watching the ponies), that I decided I had two hours until my final selection ran, I would put in some extra study into how it might trade in running so I could get into a better position.  The horse was trading at 7.60 and I believed it would be smashed in, and if not it would trade short.  I put €150 on at 7.6 and planned a nice little lay at 2.88.  It was backed into 2.68 before the off and I was looking at a high of 6k and a low of 3k.  I went to the pub to watch the race and he finished 5th.  I was so annoyed, but I was happy as I was up 3k on the day.

I returned home from the pub a few hours later and went to bed.  Got up on Saturday morning to check my balance and withdraw the funds, but when I opened my laptop-all the keys fell on the ground.  The screen was smashed also.  I looked at the ground and there were pieces of black and yellow fly line everywhere.  I had bought two new flylines for salmon fishing the day before, costing €280 and had put them on my reels earlier.  Basicaly the dog had decided to play with the reels(probably throwing them up in the air and landing on the laptop).  I had collected €3150 from the betting, but had to buy a new laptop €580 and new lines €280, so the joy was short lived.  I gave the dog a root in the hole, which I thought would help, but later I realised that maybe it was meant to be. Anyway, twas a good christmas and my new laptop is way faster and better than the old one.

Oh number 1 important rule is mind - you must be well rested and not spend too long on here.

loadedgimp, another good thing to develop ...don't make excuses for losing bets.Accept them and get on with it.

In reading this thread and others, I am always astonished to learn that everyone wins on Betair.

My favourite one of all is that some people "trade" they don't gamble. Apparently it's impossible to lose if you are a "trader" because it's like the stockmarket and they are more sophisticated than common gamblers. Remember they are not gamblers, they are traders - stockbrokers if you will Mischief

To get back to the original point, I suspect the reason most people lose is that in order to win long term, the operation has to be professional i.e. it has to be a 'job'.

However, the reason most people gamble is to escape the frustration, pressure, pain of their 'job' and they aren't prepared to replace those aspects with others that are equally frustrating, pressured and painful.

In summary, if you are capable of making gambling pay, you are equally capable of not needing to gamble.

Betting on here should be looked on as a hobby as viewed like any
other hobby, and will cost, apparently 98@, of those who enjoy this
hobby. My hobbies are playing golf, jazz, playing with numbers,
and watching live sport, mainly soccer, and betting. The enjoyment
of the last one is in getting it right more often than wrong. I've
been at it a long time (betting) am successful in a modest way,
and I put that down to sound methods of selection, patience, discipline,
sticking to what I think I understand, realism, and most importance,
modest expectancy, The toughest part is dealing with the losing runs,
and that is where belief in your methods, and acceptancy of reverses.

the reason you are losing is because your bets aren`t good enough to beat bookmakers edge.

people that struggle with money management are either overconfident wanting to win fast, or lack confidence and hope for luck.

Of course it's not a cliché and I never said 'winning has to be a job'. I said the operation has to be professional and therefore it must be a job; even if one has a professional operation, winning is in no way a certain outcome.

I guarantee you this, that anyone winning on here in the long run is operating in the context of professionalism or alternatively they have access to information from those that do.
