Its strange that all Fergies wins are put down to mind games and other managers bottling it.

I may be wrong but hasnt he won 12 titles in 26 years?

Does this mean he has lost more mind games than he has lost in England?

Also two european cups in twenty five years? Did he lose mind games 90% of the time in europe?

The Fergie 'mind games' thing is such a cliche.

And as mentioned it begs the question what happens in europe Confused

His consistency of winning trophy's and rebuilding team after team for 25 years is why he will be remembered for one of the best, only way he can be judged is if pep guardiola stays at barca for 25 years and see how consistant he is, or even any other manager if someone comes about, obviously you have mourinho but he has moved club to club at the moment. No offence arsenal fans, but look at wenger, how could he is, 7 years and no trophy, there is no consistency there, people can carry on dissing fergie saying of his failures in europe, but he is still joint 2nd in all time european multiple winners with 2 wins and 2 loses in final, with Bob Paisley 1st on 3 wins, pep and mourinho have a good chance of going one better this year thou, so we will see, but lets not forget barca have a team that is truly unique at the moment and mourinhos real madrid have soo much firepower and strengh in depth too

Takr your point about wages, but if you go down that road, you then have to consider other revenue streams.

Should Man Utd's achievement's be tainted with the 'they spent more than anyone else brush' (if you are right, not sure) if they have utilised their resources and made more money, through merchandising etc?

I don't have the figures to hand, I'm going off data I read in "Why England Lose: And other curious phenomena explained." It was written just before the last world cup, and has an interesting table where it plots average wage and average team performance. Manchester United have both the highest average wage and highest average performance, and the results for most teams are very, very consistent. Interestingly, at the same time Wenger came into Arsenal they had a massive cash injection that allowed them to start paying proper wages - Tony Adams has said that he considers the extra cash almost as important as Wenger himself.

This isn't to detract from Sir Alex or from Wenger, but it's a very interesting way of looking at things - the books a cracking read and you can get it for about a fiver off amazon, I highly reccomend it.
Report jason-dodd March 30, 2012 11:13 AM BST
Cheers, I'll do that!

Arsenals high wages are always over looked by people who consider their success in the transfer market. At one point I think the wages were double what Spurs were paying!
Report berto77 March 30, 2012 11:16 AM BST
There was a table in the newspapers the other day listing players such as Denilson, Vela, Bendtner, Arshavin, Chamakh and Squillaci are all on over £50k a week.

The figures may not be accurate, but it does give an indication about how high their wage bill must be.
Report Sergei_Rebrofl March 30, 2012 11:19 AM BST
Arsenal have a good bit of deadwood in their team. All season I've been saying that I fancied them to finish above spurs, and their extra spend on wages is a bit factor in that (though I'm not the biggest Redknapp fan either).

Ashley Cole is a good example of the wages thing. For the sake of an extra 5k a year Arsenal would've kept him, some strange decisions made by Wenger at times.

Large article in today's paper all about Fergie's mind games. Seems it's a bit more than a cliche.
Report JamDav1982 March 31, 2012 4:36 PM BST
The point is that the mind games thing only ever gets brought up when Man Utd win and never ever gets brought up when they lose titles.

It never gets brought up when Man Utd have failed to win the league over half the time he has been there and never gets brought up in europe where they have failed to win 90% of the time.

Fair point Jam but how many times have you seen Fergie combust like Wenger/Rafa/Keegan down the years. His mental strength is one of his assets. To live with the pressure of being Manu manager for 25 years and to keep his cool in these high emotional times is a rare skill. Mancini looked a mess yesterday after the game.

The mind games thing is such a joke.

Folk bring up Keegan but the league was over by then, they bring up Benitez but Liverpool gained more points after he made his 'facts' rant

Now its being said that he has broke Mancini, yet these 'mind games' have started when Man Utd are odds on favourite for the title.

If Fergie gets credited for mind games when they win surely he should be seen to have failed when they dont win, but thats not the case.

Its a cliche by the media and a lot of Man Utd fans that Fergie is some kind of Jedi/Derren Brown mind genius.
