No great love lost between the 2 nations. Pele was never too happy with the various assertions that Diego was the best ever. Now to have to go through it all again with the little genius must be too much to bear. |

There is nothing anywhere that says the best player in the world has to be a world cup winner. Say for example England had the best player in the world....it would be grossly unfair not to call him that when it's so obvious his country has no chance of ever winning the world cup.

Maradona did not win the World Cup single handedly. He was the best player in the team and had a fantastic tournament but no player ever has or ever will it without being in a solid side that gives their best player the platform to perform.
Go and watch the QF, semi final and final from WC 1986 on youtube, in none of the games did Argentina look inferior to their opponents. In the final for example they outplayed Germany despite Maradona having a poor game. They arguably had he best defence in the tournament and and good attacking players like Burachaga. Who had a fantastic assist to open the scoring in the semi final and got another assist and scored the winner in the final against Germany where he was probably Argentinas best player. |

you all need to stop looking at the stats and see whats really going on infront of you, would you class peter crouch as one of the greatest strikers england have ever produced because of his international scoring record, hmmmm let me think, NO. messi is just an amazing player who can do anything he wants with the ball at his feet and he makes everything look so simple, if anyone else scored that 2nd chip against leverkusen the world would be in uproar saying its the best goal we've ever seen, how did he do it, but we have come to expect this of messi because he does it week in week out, if he only scored 20 goals this season i would still say he is the best footballer in the world, stats play a part but they are not the be all and end all. there is only one word to describe lionel messi and that is genius.

I would say it's all down to in what era they were playing and comparisons will always be made but unless you've lived for a 100 +years no one can say who's the best Everyone has their own opinion Stats play a part because that along with maybe what your father or grandfather said about certain player comes into the equation too.
Messi probably the best currently, but people can't say he's the best player of all time just because their living in the time of Messi .. I would loved to have said " I lived in the time of Jimmy McGrory" because of what people said of him,but I wasn't so the comparison is the same in everything it's all relative, but I admired the guy playing for the shirt and refusing to play for other clubs at the likes of Arsenal where a transfer fee was said to be £10,500 which must equate to millions now! Other people will have different opinions of the players they admired and maybe said greatest player I've ever seen . Pele has a point and won 3 world cups- Messi hasn't yet and the world stage is where the your skills will be judged in footie and must be displayed as an individual or as part of a team. You can't ignore he great players from the past like Pele , Maradonna Puskas Deak Muller to name but a few |

All of Pele's goal were scored against Brazilian chicken farmers they didn't even have a pro league for most of his career.I would even go as far as saying you could pick a few of us of this forum to play at the standard Pele played at and even we would bang in a few goals.

Perhaps Pele would also like to come back when he's won three World Cups. He played one full match in the 1962 World Cup, and was injured in the second group match and played no further part in the tournament. So for him to claim he's won three World Cups is a joke.

Some would say Pele was not even the greatest Brazilian player ever.
I would agree that it's impossible to compare players from different eras though it makes for some good debate. His comments only smack of sour grapes imo and make it easier to dislike the man himself. |

How can Pele possibly think that smashing 100 goals a season against local amateur sides is comparable to scoring week in week out in one of Europe's top leagues and the CL.
It'd be like Barcelona playing against the likes of Logrones and Torrevieja every week, they'd win games 15-0. |

pele played for santos and were definetly the best club side in the world at the time, they hammered benfica over 2 legs, cant recall the competition , benfica were european cup runners up .pele was a great player completly different to maradona and messi, george best was in that class as well, and the best ever goalscorer imo was gerd muller

Agree Blackheath, the greatest player of all time should be able to perform on all stages, Messi has never got close to his barca performances for Argentina but he still has time...Brazil 2014 should be his stage to prove all doubters wrong...

I agree the champions league is greater and tougher competition than world cup, so logically the greatest player of all time if he can perform to such high levels in the champs league should be able to do it in the world cup...or is it a case that messi can only hit those personal heights when surrounded by the best club side ever assembled???

Football is a collective game, no player can do something big without a great team around him. This story of Maradona winning WC 86 alone is a complete joke, they did beat Germany 3-2 in final and the scorers was Brown, Valdano and Burruchaga. There is no way to evaluate a player without speaking about the team he's playing in

Platini was a great player but never won the World Cup because the French team wasn't good enough. Zidane would never have won the World Cup without an amazing defence and midfield they had 1998-2000. The credit can't be given to a single player.
