It's getting late, the last live football on the telly has just finished. Confirmation of this has been reached by flicking through all the channels. You curse under your breath that with all the satellite channels you subscribe to there is not one damn live football match on. You know damn well there will be a game on somewhere but no it's just not on the telly. "f'em I will find one online" you hear yourself saying as you open up some more tabs.

Ok plan B is needed. A quick loading up of livescore or futbol24 and you find a match is coming up. Oh good its FC Dogsbollox against FC Shoitepile. A quick scan of the Betfair markets and yes it's there. A quick look at the odds reveals Dogsbollox at 1.3 and Shoitepile at 10's. "This looks like a money spinner" goes through the mind "Dogsbollox must be like Barca". All I need to do now is find out where Dogsbollox are as you know full well it's important that you at least know which country they are from and how high their ground is above sea level before you can even consider entering the in-play thread on the forum.

A quick google search and Dogsbollox are found to play in the Philippines Premier Leaga Uno. A quick look up on soccerstats reveals Dogsbollox are top of the league and unbeaten in 10, great stuff. Oh but hang on where are Shoitepile? Oh damn, its not a league game its the Copa del Carp and Shoitepile are from the Malaysian Poop League. Oh well fear not the forum will know about this sort of match and I need to get on quick before it starts.

So in you go to the "Dogsbollox v Shoitepile" thread and sure enough there are some posters in there with their bets and match analysis. Some poster called "donemyconkers" is going full bank on Dogsbollox and "gettheforkinthere" is going in big on goals. Great stuff it's on Betfair video and now I know my bets are on Dogsbollox and goals.

So all loaded up and ready for the kick off with total confidence of a home win and goals. Suddenly "donemyconkers" posts asking what colour Dogsbollox are. Oh fcuk goes through the mind, hes the guy that posted about full bank on Dogsbollox and he doesn't even know their home kit. Even though I'm in the same position having bet on Dogsbollox and not knowing which team they are I wait patiently for a reply so I can see who is who on the vid. 15 minutes of the match goes by and someone called "nailedon" posts its going to be 0-0. How can this be when "gettheforkinthere" has gone big on goals goes through the mind.

The match nears half time and it's still 0-0. Dogsbollox are down to 10 men and Shoitepile have a corner. It rebounds off 5 players before hitting the crossbar and going in off the back of the goalies head. 0-1 Shoitepile. You curse at the screen as the Shoitepile backers post Booooooooom and GTFI in the forum. How can this be possible? Dogshoite are far better team than Shoitepile, they must be they were 1.3 ffs.  Half time 0-1.

But wait, whats this? "donemyconkers" is going to bed! with a full bank on Dogsbollox? How can this be? "gettheforkinthere" replies saying good night and hes off as well as he can't see anymore goals and he's greened up from the first goal to finish off a good day.

With hopes fading with the loss of "donemyconkers" and "gettheforkinthere" it goes through your mind that the goal was lucky and even with 10 men Dogsbollox will surely get back into this as its the Copa Carp for gods sake. Half time comes, the score still 0-1. Shortly after half time a penalty to Shoitepile and you decide you've done your dough and it's time for bed if it goes in. Sure enough in it goes. The laptop lid gets slammed down and you go to bed promising yourself not to get involved in the Copa del Carp again and that it's a mug cup for mug teams.

That was quite an enjoyable read Laugh

kudos for even bothering to write it, you clearly have alot of time and thoughts to spare... i think it covers a fair few punters on here quite well too.

good night thanks for the bed time story Love

hehe thanks dime. I was just waiting for the cricket to start and I nearly slipped into the road to perdition to kill the boredom whilst waiting for the cricket. Instead I managed to dissuade myself by writing a novel instead which served as a good reminder to me not to bet on something I haven't got the foggiest idea about Laugh

LOL
i remember about a year ago it was around 5-6am and i spent all the night betting on southamerican matches, but i wasn't tired and was looking for a match to see; i found one in japan in j-league 2.

i did some quick research and then placed my bets, opened a stream and followed the game, that endend 0-0; the funny part of the story is that after the match ended i opened the livescore in order to see what happened in the others j-league2 matches, and surprisingly i noticed that the match i was following ended 1-0 SurprisedSurprised. after a couple of minutes i realized i followed the wrong game LaughLaugh.

what i learned about this? i must learn japanese, because team's names on the tv screen was written in japanese.

Haha good post. That is definitely the guy who said Cambodia under 21s were a cert. Have to say I have spent 10 minutes watching a game desperately trying to work out which colour my team is playing in only to find out when a goal has gone in.
Also had to laugh cos EVERY match thread has someone saying "There's goals in this" followed by someone else saying "0-0 nailed on" . However impossible it seems they both manage to "green out".

It would be funny if it wasn't so painfully true. I'm speaking as a man who whilst on an idyllic family holiday in rural India, stayed up till stupid o clock betting on a Turkish Micky Mouse Cup game, cursing the Indian phone networks for their crap reception and just needing one goal from Shyteanspor so I could go to sleep.
No more.

hi there

a good read, well done.

this is why i look at this game as another job, i do my work, place the bets, get the points i want then go and live the rest of my life for that day, or evening.

i think the another factor is that if you have had a good evening and in profit, you think you are invincible, so you search for the obscure match and loose it all, on top of that you are potentially tired, and potentially dont do as  much research as you might usually do.

i personally now work the peak evening hours, and hope  by 10.30 uk time to be  done and gone until the next day.

but i do totally understand that it is a discipline thing.

it all depends on ur edge. as long as u are aware of the risk of such obscure games it s easy to get value in these unknown games than the European major leagues

Flamengo v Emelec looks like first up tonight. Hopefully there will be some informative posts in the thread to guide me towards an edge Silly
Report martin19842 March 8, 2012 10:45 PM GMT
hi there

if youve got the knowledge or an edge, then carry on, otherwise, wait till tomorrow, why write off any hard earned profit today when you have in excess of 60 in play games to look at tomorrow.

and then youve got hundreds of games over the weekend, surely one obscure game isnt worth it.

i think u lot are mugs if u are of the opinion that u have to bet on the european games only. it is not about the number of games to select from it is all about ur edge. if ur edge is valid only for european games then it s not advisable to bet on the late games. however if ur edge is valid for any game then bet on it. and after all the late night games especally if there are not many games have decent liqudity
Report themover March 9, 2012 12:59 AM GMT
care to expand on that further henok?

I assume you are referring to an edge based on a statistical analysis of matches across a broad number of events in a given league, for example?
Report henok March 9, 2012 1:13 AM GMT
if ths thread is aimed towards the recreational gamblers, it doesnt matter when they gamble, they enjoy and they lose end of story. if t is aimed at gamblers trying to maek money then, they have to bet as much as they can as long as they have an edge. whetehr late night or early morning. didnt get the whole poingt of ur lierature sorry.
Report themover March 9, 2012 1:32 AM GMT
yes it was more a light-hearted look at a recreational gambler I suppose but can also be applied to the non-recreational as well. I wouldn't call myself a recreational gambler but I know for sure I am often tempted into "having a punt" shall we call it knowing very little, if not anything, about a specific event. These times are normally inbetween events when I have an interest in that I think I might have some idea of how I am going to bet or trade. What prompted me to write it the other night was because I so nearly got involved in a football match I can honestly say I didn't have the foggiest idea about and certainly didn't have an edge anywhere other than the potential edge I could have fallen off the sofa from Laugh
Report scara_manga March 9, 2012 10:33 AM GMT
"having an edge" another gem of a phrase someone always comes out with . Usually it means they have looked at soccerway for a couple of minutes and have convinced themselves they know more and everyone else is a "mug".
