Whilst at a glance it obviously seems like a ridiculous sum it's worth looking at the other side of the story.

Could that £11 million have provided the 2 points they needed to stay up? Almost certainly yes.

Same thing as Bradford City under Richmond: the first year they were in the Premier League Richmond and Rhodes paid themselves a divi of £2.3 million, which as a proportion of PL money is equlivilent to Oyston's payment. Bradford fans are still divided over whether BFG deserved it for getting them up with his own money or ripped the club off. More joined the latter camp when they went into admin, even more the second time they did.
