I don't know. Wondering if anyone did. I know there's many close to the coast, but which is the closest?

Report Monkeymagic March 2, 2012 10:39 PM GMT
My team Hartlepools ground is less than 1/2 a mile from the North Sea.

I'm not talking about rivers or estuaries or the like. I mean proper coasts.

I said English, but I meant British and after scouting around, I feel I can confirm that the Gayfield, home of Arbroath, is indeed the closest in Britain and Europe.

Didn't the old Sunderland ground (Roker Park) sit just on the seafront?
Report mafeking March 2, 2012 11:25 PM GMT
their new ground must be pretty close too. always blowing an absolute howling gale whenever i've been up there. by far the windiest ground in the prem.
Report TRFC Kev March 2, 2012 11:35 PM GMT
I'd personally say Grimsby. Closer than Blackpool.
Sunderland used to be pretty close.

As for Southend, I reckon I've been there 8-10 times and I've never even seen the sea.

If you sit high enough in our mainstand you can see the River Mersey, which begs the question, which football club is closest to the Mersey?
Report brngtwt March 2, 2012 11:41 PM GMT
Closest to the mersey is wigan?
Report Knight Rider March 2, 2012 11:43 PM GMT
Stockport County I think
Report tonycottee March 2, 2012 11:48 PM GMT
Dover Athletic's Crabble ground is pretty close
Report TRFC Kev March 3, 2012 12:00 AM GMT
Knight Rider is correct, but the question was always "Which League side is closest to the Mersey?"

Stockport are no longer a league side, and I remember going to Runcorn's Canal St ground and I don't think that was far away. They don't play ther any more, I think they share with someone.

I don't know this answer, but which English league ground is furthest from the sea?
Report treble March 3, 2012 12:02 AM GMT
I think I can safely say that Prenton Park is the closest to the Mersey.
Report TRFC Kev March 3, 2012 12:03 AM GMT
Stockport is closer.
Report Knight Rider March 3, 2012 12:04 AM GMT
After a quick glance at the map I'd go for either Northampton or Derby.

Been to your ground a few times Kev, my grandparents used to live about a 10 minute walk away next to Victoria Park.
Report TRFC Kev March 3, 2012 12:10 AM GMT
Who's your team KR?

I was hoping it might be Chesterfield, where I'm going tomorrow. My 131st ground watching Tranmere.
Report antony_27 March 3, 2012 12:49 AM GMT
Portsmouth and Plymouth?, both naval towns so i should imagine they are pretty close to the water Laugh
Report morpteh mackem March 3, 2012 9:38 AM GMT
roker park was less than 1/2 mile away, sol is further inland.

you're not far wrong Crisp. Fleetwood's Highbury Stadium must be one of the closest to the sea I'd have thought.  .
