Some shocking omissions in this thread, which has clearly been composed by young scamps.
Dave Mackay was probably the hardest genuinely top class player to appear in the Football League since the war. Bobby Collins was arguably the hardest full stop - and he was 5' 4" tall. Billy Whitehouse genuinely scared people and is a good shout for the title. Willie Woodburn probably takes it, though. |

Bert Trautmann for goalkeeper. He played the last 17 mins of the 1956 cup final with a broken neck. He was also a German paratrooper in WW2. There's hard and there's Bert.
Wilf Copping in midfield, Arsenal player from the 30's. He just looks hard as nails. The Leeds side of the 60's and 70's could all take care of themselves but the two hardest, beyond doubt, were Bobby Collins and Johnny Giles. |

No one seems to have picked Pat van den Hauwe - "Psycho" Pat. Now he was hard.
William Ralph Dean could also handle himself. And he could rise above the thuggery and score the occasional goal or two. |

Hardest Football XI?
Surely: Maximus Handsicus Dextrus Backus Centrus Nailsus Sinatra Kareokus Spartacus I'm Also Spartacus Biggus Dickus Swings Them Inus Targetio Manus VI Cubit Poachiallio Linekerus When things got tough, they'd adopt a turtle formation on the half way line and call on the 8th legion as a sub. |

The entire Leeds team from the Revie era, even the tea lady would have sorted out some of todays so called hardmen.Ron Yeats,Peter Storey and Joe Bolton from Sunderland were also not to be messed with, but my money would be on Mackay.

Hard on the field or tough?
On the field there have been plenty and most of them the old timers. The likes of Mackay, Smith, Case and Collins would eat todays footballers for breakfast on the pitch. In fighting terms the main man would have been someone like Fashanu. Genuinely tough fellas like Ferguson, Whitehurst etc would have fallen to Fashanu's superior skills. |
