Michael Jordan was a superb sportsman, the very best in his field and an exceptional athlete, no doubt about it. It's just sometimes worth taking away the media/marketing circus that surrounded him and remembering him purely for his sporting ability. And also worth looking at the sportsmen of 100 plus years ago, who didn't have the advantage of all the hype generated by the media and marketing interests.

Phil Taylor - no doubt, has raised the bar in darts like never seen in any sport.

Can't have a man who had to cheat to beat Henry Cooper, so that rules out Ali.

This thread has given me food for thought.
Ali or Phil Taylor The greatest heavy-weight in the history of boxing; a man who transcended the sport to enter entertainment and politics at a world level, and does so still - or a fat git from Stoke who throws bits of metal at a board a few feet away. Betfair forumites - they can always make you think hard. |

Exceptional team sportsman should get the nod for the extra dimension in piggy backing their teams to glory |
|
By:
michael jordan is a great shout... but is he really up there with tiger ? im not sure
|
|
By:
tiger woods is the best golfer - that's as far as it goes - hardly an all rounder though
not even sure i'd call golf a real sport , as physical pursuits go it's about as demanding as painting and decorating |
|
By:
Ali and tiger are the best in individual sports. Team sporting greats sometimes have to face a few greats in opposition(simultaneously) whilst carrying dead weight in his own team.
No offence to individual sports, but it ain't as difficult to succeed as team sports because you don't have to motivate team-mates or go 1v5 |

Can't have a man who had to cheat to beat Henry Cooper, so that rules out Ali. Tiger Woods is the correct answer. How exactly did he cheat? |

Deion Sanders. Played multiple positions (about 5) in the NFL, played MLB when he was bored. Won a superbowl, played in the World Series, and once scored a touchdown AND a home run in the same week. Nuff said really.
