Hanover - Hannover 96 can go second in the Bundesliga with a win over FC St. Pauli on Friday night. The 96ers will be without in-form striker Didier Ya Konan, but Pauli are facing a few personnel problems of their own.
The hosts have surprised everyone with their excellent start to the young campaign, but coach Mirko Slomka is refusing to let his squad get ahead of themselves. "Euphoria isn't a bad thing. The fans have to be able to dream. But we're all keeping our feet firmly on the ground," said the 96 supremo ahead of Friday's northern matchup with St. Pauli. Even so, Hannover's best-ever start to a Bundesliga season has whet Slomka's appetite for more: "We want to continue our good run."
Dream duo separated
Unbeaten at home and mixing it with the best of late, Hannover's development over the past few weeks has been remarkable. After an embarrassing DFB Cup exit at the hands of Elversberg seven weeks ago, the team have risen from the wreckage in style. "At the moment it's just great fun. There's a real party atmosphere at our home matches," said defender Christian Schulz. The last team to try their luck at the AWD-Arena, UEFA Champions League contestants Werder Bremen, were sent packing following a 4-1 defeat.
The team is growing. The defence looks stable, the attack dangerous. Slomka will however be forced into changes for the visit of St. Pauli, most notably his seven-goal strike pairing of Mohammed Abdellaoue and Didier Ya Konan. The former should be fit after recovering from a bruised head, but his partner is out with a knee injury.
Slomka's alternatives, Stanislawski's absentees
The Ivorian is likely to be replaced by Mikael Forssell, though Lars Stindl is another alternative. Former Germany internationals Mike Hanke and Jan Schlaudraff are poised to remain on the bench. "We'll find a solution, we have a few options," said Slomka.
His managerial counterpart Holger Stanislawski is reflecting on a turbulent week gone by. First the eccentric coach blew his top at his training following Pauli's 3-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, before the squad had to deal with the disappointment of defender Carsten Rothenbach tearing a muscle following a training-ground challenge with Moritz Volz. Rothenbach has since undergone successful surgery, but he will definitely miss the Hannover match.
"I can't stand moaning"
Stanislawski, who will also be without Matthias Lehmann and Florian Bruns (both flu), refused to dramatise his injury situation. "I can't stand moaning. I've got a whole reserve team and then the youth team as well."
The 41-year-old doesn't necessarily have to delve into the reserves for cover either. In Gerald Asamoah he has a former Germany international who is itching to get back into the grind and the 31-year-old winger could well make his full debut against the club he played for from 1994-1999.
