Being promoted to the premiership claims to worth over £90m to the club that achieves it.
Considering most players have a 25% wage rise written into their contract for promotion, then adding the staff, clerical and media costs it starts to add up. Also signing new players will want a certain wage.
Then the payments from SKY come in installments so most clubs borrow against future income which wipes out some of the natural prizemoney.
Look at blackpool, i wondered why they have not signed many players so far.
Blackpool 'will pay promotion bonuses to players' Demontagnac battles with Hunt at Ashton Gate Blackpool lost a pre-season friendly with Bristol City on Saturday
Blackpool's players have been reassured that they will be paid bonuses they were promised for winning promotion to the Premier League.
Some players are believed to have been promised as much as £400,000 for winning their Championship play-off against Cardiff at Wembley in May.
Players' union chief Gordon Taylor said the club has promised to pay up when it gets television rights money in August.
"I'm confident it will be paid - the club have told us it will be," he said.
Blackpool gained promotion to the top flight after beating Cardiff 3-2 in a tense play-off match that was said to be worth £90m to the winning club.
Players are thought to have demanded their money when they returned to training over three weeks ago.
But Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Taylor has insisted that players are not worried about the money and will be paid by 6 August.
It has been a nice little surprise for Blackpool to get themselves promoted but they have to live up to the agreement
Gordon Taylor
"We are aware of the situation at Blackpool," he said. "It has been reported to the Premier League and to the Football League.
"It looks like it will be paid in the first instalment of central funding from the Premier League when it comes through.
"The players are not worried. They have been re-assured that it will be paid."
Taylor was unable to confirm how much money was due to be paid to players but said the club needed to live up to its promise.
"I'm not sure if it's at the level that has been reported but it is a big, big bonus that needs to be paid," he said.

Blackpool, who are back in the top flight for the first time since 1971, are currently upgrading the East Stand at their Bloomfield Road stadium in a bid to raise capacity to 17,600.
The club were due to host Wigan in their opening Premier League match on 14 August but have switched the tie to Wigan's DW Stadium, in case work on the new stand is not complete.
I still cant remember the last club to really benefit from promotion to the epl.
Stoke are doing well but they seem to spending more money than usual, a lot of clubs that were promoted in the last 10 years are a in a complete mess now (or were).
WBA have done it right, not spending too much and if they get relegated they are still in control of their short term future.
next biggest myth .......... '4th place is worth £100 million'
Probably not worth that if you win the whole tournament, certainly doubt Everton made £100M from it in 2005 .

It may just be the way the numbers are used. The figure may just mean that they will have an increased turnover of 90million with profits (if any) being far lower than that.

This isn't the same ar5ehole Holloway who said his players were "Working class" and had their feet on the ground. Most of them would bury the club in order to get their "Bonus"

The 'world class' thing has become really annoying over the last couple of seasons, mainly through none too bright, cliche ridden ex players working as pundits. Nobody is allowed to be described as good, very good or excellent anymore - it has to be world class. Surely by definition this means a player that would, without question get in any team in the world. The world cup proved there is no such player in the premiership, and probably only maybe Messi and Xavi globally that 80% plus would agree on.

Getting to the Premier and even managing to stay up first season certainly didn't help my club Bradford - almost put us into extinction. Admittedly, it's also about the club not being crazy in spending, so Blackpool probably have the right idea in not spending.
