Newcastle United look to have won the race to sign defender Sol Campbell after the veteran arrived in the north east for a medical on Tuesday.

The former England international, 35, is out of contract after his deal with Arsenal ran out this summer.

The Gunners were reported to be keen to keep Campbell, while there was also interest from Sunderland and Celtic.

But Campbell looks to have plumped for a move to the Magpies as they prepare for their Premier League return.

Choosing Newcastle over Arsenal, Sunderland and that huge club Celtic? Surely not.

Can only think Sol is a closet Toon fan, he is not the type to be influenced by money.

He has the Newcastle badge tattooed on his inner thigh doesn't he?

was he good friends with Houghton at Spurs?  perhaps he has more chance of staying on in the training ranks at Newcastle once he retires

Bruce also confirmed that the signing of Bramble has ended his interest in bringing former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell to the club.

Bruce added: "Now that we've got Titus, I think that's it for Sol.

"We had a chat with him and we talked about it, but we've got a better deal with Titus coming in.

"We're not looking to sign Sol Campbell anymore
