Alex Higgins dead

They don't have to show respect for Higgins if they don't want to. It's their choice. Just like it was the opening posters choice to put this on the forum in the first place. Not everyone wants to read this.

I saw Alex a few times in Manchester over the last year or so.  One time was before the Manchester derby in the Red Lion pub in Withington, next to a big cancer hospital where I presumed he was receiving treatment.

It was the day before the Manchester derby at Old Trafford which united won 4-3. He handed me a betting slip with a correct score bet of 3-2 written on it and croaked advice (he couldn't speak) for me to back it.

Honestly, his appearance was shocking.  A walking, drinking skeleton with a copy of the racing post.

Just because of who it was, I put the bet on and was able to trade out at odds-on when the score reached 3-2.  One of my biggest single wins last season.

So, a toast to you, Hurricane, sir.  RIP.

d2 I have nothing wrong with people choosing to pay respect to him or anyone else. I just don't agree with berating someone because they choose not to respect them.

For the record I haven't passed comment either way. I both agree that it is sad that he has died, but also think he didn't hold much respect for his own life or others that were meant to be close to him.

Would agree with you to some extent Patrick but you also have exceptions such as azertyioup, he is not flawed at all in any way. For instance he is not a bitter, hateful little man, disappointed at the abject failure his life his life has become, and the fact that no one likes his hideous personality and want to hit him where ever he goes and so resorts to being a complete and utter tool on a forum. That's one of the problems, these skewed values we seem to have, ie making 'achievement' the greatest goal of life, conveniently forgetting whatever appalling abuse - to themselves and others - are perpetrated along the way.

What about their utter failure, even in basic health terms, of valuing their precious human body?!

What about the failure of being responsible for their lives?

What about the hurt these so-called 'great' people have caused to many close to them? Especially to the women in their lives?

And to many who were unlucky enough to be near them 'at the wrong time'?!

What about real human values: integrity, honesty, responsibility, love(not emotional bullshine or sentiment)?

To indiscriminately laud such people to the skies is to indulge ourselves in sentimental hogwash - however skilled they might have been, however great champions they may have been.

After all, if so-called 'great' people are so very flawed, what a great excuse for us not to bother!
