homegrown means they must have spent 3 years in the English football system before the age of 21.

an example of some players in man city squad who count as home grown:
Bellamy, Hart, Barry, A Johnson, SWP, J Lescott, N Onuoha, M Richards, Ireland, S Taylor, D Boyata, G Cunningham, M Johnson, W Bridge

and some other youthies.
