Someone put up a post on a forum called MSE suggesting that they could lay all the players in the Carling Cup final as the market was 140%.. lol.

You've got to read it to believe it.

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=386063

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=386241

Some reported doing 5+. Some seem to have withdrawn their balance when it went t1ts up.

They'll need a lot of money off coupons to get that back !!

Well I checked my balance and it said 0.00.. I was baffled too..

Then I checked my statement and it says -11.8k

I'm not joking.

I'm just on the phone to Betfair to see if they're gonna help me out of this in any way because I don't have a penny to give em.

I feel really stupid now. numbers were good, didn't consider void bets at all..

I'm still speechless.. dumbest thing I've ever done in life...

I think I took the biggest losses here.. it did seem to good to be true... whats done is done now.. incredible..

I actually withdraw my money off betfair when Tim advised we were gonna get screwed.. whether or not I receive that money to my bank.

Off phone now.. manager is ringing me back.. I'm just gonna tell him I can only make token payments each month.. I cannot write a cheque for 12k.

I can only pray they write this debt off... god I dunno.. worst case, I'll have to leg it.

Why this focus on Icesave?

My overall reason is because its cash ISA is currently one of my top picks (see top cash ISAs) and its savings account is still one of the highest interest payers (see top savings). Therefore its an account that many, choosing on standard MoneySaving terms, should be picking/using.

I just had an enjoyable twenty minutes reading through all this. Haven't seen it before. So all those guys who had huge liabilities got away with losing nothing or at most their balance? Betfair didn't realise the chance of these liabilities exceeding their balance? And then it took eight months for them to reinstate FGS markets in a proper way? How much do you reckon Betfair lost?

WOW

I can sympathise with those guys (at the same time as reveling in schadenfreude) as I've experienced heart-in-mouth-adrenalin-rushing moments when suddenly you realise that arb is completely wrong and you've only gone and dutched two different matches happening on different dates or something then you've got to find a way of trading out of it for damage limitation while kicking yourself for being such an idiot. But those were like 5 or 6% arbs that could have been right. 140% books that never seem to run out of money to give you - that's just classic!

Doesn't really matter if a player doesn't play.. because you only need another to score, and I got 3.5k profit on no goal scorer too... fully greened up.. no exposure. locked in profit regardless what happens.

Hard to comprehend this was 15 years ago.  I opened an forum account with MSE because of the matched betting threads.  I wanted to bet something on Betfair, creating an arb in the process, and posted the risk free bet on MSE.  I got a bit of abuse and my MSE account was blocked.  Charming!  I was legitimately offering them some risk free cash.
