Going back a few years, Alan Gilzean would stop the team bus [after away games] and be dropped at the nearest dog track.

There's a great picture on the back cover of Stan Bowles' autobiography of him reading a copy of the Sporting Life that he'd grabbed from a fan at the front of the terraces, while waiting for a corner to be taken during a match. Stan "I was a gambler who happened to be good at football" Bowles, the most sublimely talented player of his generation.

Saw Alan Brazil at Ascot many moons ago. He was with his teammate Graham Roberts. Now, Mr Brazil was asked to part with a tenner by Roberts as they were placing a bet between them. AB didnt look to keen to part with the dough, now he's a big player by all accounts.
