167, nine darter each leg Excited
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 8:37 PM GMT
Nope.  I reckon you could ask 100 people and you'd be lucky if 1 person got the right answer.
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 8:38 PM GMT
So am I misunderstanding your question then .....
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 8:41 PM GMT
Possibly. It's not really a trick question, but the answer is very tricky
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 8:50 PM GMT
Ok then, 172 and change is my next proposal, your opponent is also on fire and hitting nine darters Surprised
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 8:50 PM GMT
163.8
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 8:51 PM GMT
oh wait nerver mind
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 8:52 PM GMT
Nope
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 8:53 PM GMT
171.4
Report wondersobright December 30, 2016 8:54 PM GMT
167 if you are playing on your own but higher if you are playing an opponent Wink
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 8:59 PM GMT
Its higher than 167

171.4 isn't correct.

You have to think outside two boxes to get the right answer
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:02 PM GMT
about 174.4?
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 9:03 PM GMT
i think i got that answer buy 3 nine darters and 2 missing on d12 then wiining the set 3-2 but i dont know what i worked out ha
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:05 PM GMT
You are on the right lines hfink
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:07 PM GMT
174.4 is the right answer if it was best of 3 rather than first to 3
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:09 PM GMT
I got:
leg 1: 180, 180
leg 2: 180, 180, 141
leg 3: 180, 180
giving 1 dart average of 58.143; giving 3 dart average of 142.43
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:09 PM GMT
oh, of course, I did best of 3...I'll try again... :)
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:10 PM GMT
But it's not best of 3 Shocked
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 9:10 PM GMT
what so you loose the set aswell lol
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 9:11 PM GMT
maths never my strongest
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:11 PM GMT
173.5?
Report wondersobright December 30, 2016 9:11 PM GMT
tough school foz
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 9:12 PM GMT
i clearly
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:16 PM GMT
174.2 with the best of three and you lost the match
173.9 with the best of three and you win the match
no two legs required in final set
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:17 PM GMT
173.5 still wrong.

That' what I got and I was convinced I was right until my son wanted to bet me £20 Happy
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:18 PM GMT
Oh, so need to rethink again then...Confused
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:20 PM GMT
To be clear, is it best of three legs per set ?
Is there a requirement to win the final set by two clear legs ?
And how many sets ?
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 9:22 PM GMT
5 isnt it
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 9:22 PM GMT
qnd just single set average?
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:22 PM GMT
set = best of five legs so first to three.  No requirement to win by two legs
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:23 PM GMT
Aye, but Clydebank is moving the goalposts Scared
Report fozdog December 30, 2016 9:23 PM GMT
set average or match average
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:27 PM GMT
single set average.  Goalposts haven't moved.
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:28 PM GMT
ok, five leg sets, best of five sets
match average of 173.76 and I lose or 173.24 and I win Surprised
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:28 PM GMT
174.8 single set average, I lose the set
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:29 PM GMT
nope
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:31 PM GMT
I get 174.8 in a losing set, too, Angoose, but 172.2 in a winning set.
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:32 PM GMT
Does throwing first or second affect this? Having the throw in the best of 5 may be a different highest average to not having it
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:32 PM GMT
or i could be wrong
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:33 PM GMT
You do lose the set, but by what score?
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:33 PM GMT
3-0 = 180
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:33 PM GMT
Or if it's the highest possible average we are assuming you have the throw first
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:33 PM GMT
No. Ignore that!
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:33 PM GMT
You'd need to throw second
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:34 PM GMT
180 highest possible, hit one then miss the board with every other dart. Booom.
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:34 PM GMT
If you throw first, you have to get a nine darter for a 167 leg average
When your opponent throws first, he hits a nine darter whilst you throw two 180's for a 180 leg average
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:35 PM GMT
I suspect that we are all still stuck in the second box that Clydebank mentioned .....
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:36 PM GMT
Throw 2nd in every leg or just the starting one? If you throw seconds in every leg starting second I think you can go 180, 180, but your opponent throws 9 darter each time.
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:37 PM GMT
Title says at the World's, so leading on alternative legs.
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:38 PM GMT
ok so think i've got it
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:38 PM GMT
Yep stuck in the second boxLaugh

A bit of seemingly illogical lateral thinking needed.
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:38 PM GMT
175.1?
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:39 PM GMT
180 - leg 1
167 - leg 2
180 - leg 3
167 - leg 4
180 - leg 5

Against the starts average = 174.8?
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:40 PM GMT
* scrub my last answer - just realised mis-calc  :(
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:40 PM GMT
You're the third one of us to apply that logic and get 174.8  :-)
Report Hamsterdam December 30, 2016 9:40 PM GMT
and mine already been discarded Sad
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:41 PM GMT
Ok, going for an average of 180, you retire hurt after losing the opening leg Excited
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:42 PM GMT
Laugh
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:45 PM GMT
175.44 losing 3-0 and with your opponent starting?
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:47 PM GMT
Correction, 178.48
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:47 PM GMT
"180 - leg 1
167 - leg 2
180 - leg 3
167 - leg 4
180 - leg 5

Against the starts average = 174.8?
"

.....

The average is 173.5 because you've thrown 3 times in the 167 legs and only twice in the 180 legs.  But 173.5 isn't right anyway
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:50 PM GMT
^still can't see better than that answer (173.5) at the mo... :(
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:50 PM GMT
You might have cracked the second box Lat.  but have been let down by your addition
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:52 PM GMT
1-0, Score 180, 180, lose to a 9 darter
2-0, Score 180, 180, 139, lose to a 9 darter
3-0, Score 180, 180, lose to a 9 darter

174.14?
Report hfink December 30, 2016 9:54 PM GMT
^ well done Lat, that's got to be it surely?
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:56 PM GMT
slight adjust to that, 174.2857, hit 140 rather than 139 .....
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:57 PM GMT
WD Happy

To crack the second box you have to figure out that to achieve the best possible average you don't want to get the best possible score.
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:57 PM GMT
scrub that, you can't sit one one Whoops
Report CLYDEBANK29 December 30, 2016 9:58 PM GMT
You can' be left on 1 Angoose.  You'd be bust.
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 9:58 PM GMT
Got there eventually Laugh
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 9:59 PM GMT
That's a good one and we all jumped in to the trap ....
Report Nilsson Schmilsson December 30, 2016 10:03 PM GMT
that will be a bloody bad last dart to leave double 1 Silly
Report hfink December 30, 2016 10:30 PM GMT
Laugh
Report hfink December 30, 2016 10:31 PM GMT
Yeh, that was a good question Clyde. Thanks for that one, and well done Lat.
Report Latalomne December 30, 2016 10:33 PM GMT
NS - It would be a bloody bad penultimate dart to not leave a finish!  Laugh
Report wisewords December 30, 2016 11:09 PM GMT
The correct answer is surely 175.44444?

I calc this as 175.44444?

Report Angoose December 30, 2016 11:17 PM GMT
180 180
180 180 139
180 180

1,219 points, 21 darts thrown, 58.05 per dart, 174.14 three dart average
Report wisewords December 30, 2016 11:23 PM GMT
cheers Angoose, I was forgetting that the 2nd leg score was achieved with 9 darts rather than 6 in leg 1 & 3.
