As it's now December I thought I'd get the ball rolling early in anticipation of a great tournament to come Happy
Anyone got any fancies that could do some damage at huge prices?

I'm sure D&B will update us with the draw later on today and then I'll be scouring Oddschecker for the quarter winners as there's often some terrific value in that market.
Last year I backed Devon Peterson to win his quarter at 250/1 but James Wade sorted him out in the last 16...I had hoped that the same Wade who struggled so badly but still scrambled through against Darren Webster & Andy Smith would turn up but my Nemesis scuppered that one and alas, he stepped on the gas Sad

I think Christian Kist is a horrible draw for whoever of the top 32 draws him...he's been playing some really good stuff recently and despite Gary Anderson's brilliance in the Players' Championships and hitting a near 108 average against him, Kist still had a dart at the bull to knock him out!
Kist is my idea of a sporting outsider than could win a few games and threaten the better players in his quarter - I'll be backing him at what I'm expecting will be tasty odds.

Yes MJ. Prelims are part of the World Champs. For reassurance email Susan.

I'm more than happy with 3 to win 2. A gift reminiscent to the good old days of Taylor trading at the same price to walz tourneys. Best bet of the tournament so far in my eyes. £30 on yesterday and another £30 today. Don't have the funds for £300 Sad

Report Navel-Gazer December 15, 2014 2:16 AM GMT
Rob - that's far from appealing to me even though last year it happened in consecutive matches on the fourth day (Saturday) - the Kyle Anderson one was nearly as painful to me as it was for Terry Jenkins who had his bonanza halved...mine was totally wiped out as that incredible 9-darter from the unknown Abo cost me well over a grand! Cry

D&B - that was a great clip which seeing it on youtube again somehow didn't seem to do it justice...that looked so much better on one of my DVDs (with maximum volume and after a few jars) a few years ago and I remember being in bulk at that when it happened.
I'm sure you realise it's DAVE Richardson (never heard of him) that's in the first round and not THE James Richardson who astonished Barney.

Good luck to the guy...he looked like he was plucked straight from the local boozer (that could be YOU one day Laugh) and he milked it in spades by having a more than catchy song before that 'nobody' conducted the audience and turned into Herbert Von Karajan Laugh

The win over RVB must've given a lot of hope for many quality County players (who are virtually anonymous) when they see how James Richardson performed...if memory serves he hit TWO 145 checkouts when he finished of Barneveld - that was fantastic to watch.

BigRob1, most things appeal to me in darts, like when a market forms to NOT achieve something. It can be more appealing, and though it doesn't answer the question, it sure helps me try to improve my typing speed. Laugh

P.S. I backed a 9 darter to be hit in the worlds way back when at 8/11 hills. Not ashamed to say I have since traded it with NO 9 darter @ 8/5 susan for a 1.2pt profit.

I'm like the bloke who staked 17p on a correct score 4fold in the footy and cashed out in play for £4.58. The bet copped and would have returned over £3k if only he'd fecked off to a desert island on the night. Surprised

11/4 for 2 or more 9 darters...the more i look at it the less attractive a proposition it becomes. Some of us posters are mere mathematical junkies with a piss poor bank balance. Who's to say which way the darts gods will go in terms of total 9 darters? It's your option - go for it.

marychain1,

Cullen stands out as a bad example, as hills have him to win the match @ 11/1, and 12/1 with both winning a set.

Some cracking alternatives. Each of the matches where the jolly is @ 1/4, and a shade odds on with both winning a a set is far more appealing to some.

King is 1/6 to beat Hopp, yet only 10/11 to win the match with both winning a set.
Maximus is somewhat of a teenage sensation. In terms of German darts he's billed as the next big thing. That's a bet that needs looking into. Wink

The secret to the bet is hoping a selection throws first in sets 1 & 3 for a 3-0 outcome, and vice versa for copping a set.

I've already done some rags to win @ 4/1, and also on the h'cap. Gerwyn is one of the 4/1 rags, (forget Jamie) Gerwyn is set to become the new sensation in Welsh darts. He's built like a rugby player, because he was/is a rugby player. Dr Rod has analysed him several times and said his physique is all wrong for a dart player. This is a player who continuously reels off 95+ averages match after match on the floor tour and slays the players who stand before him (the elite included). Time to move along as i've already sang his praises in a previous piece.

...Following on from above...Barneveld is totally fecked up both physically and mentally right now - One to avoid!

Rowby John Rodriguez has been a revelation this season. His totally over the top celebrations from just winning a leg against Thornton was a sight to behold. He really got under the thorns skin that day. (Think of Wright when he stops and turns to the crowd before going for a double, and an exaggerated MVG celebration). Neither came close to Rowby's antics. Laugh

Sadly, Rowby has since reeled in his "Chainsaw" celebrations - One to keep onside in 180's markets.

Mensur Suljovic, is one of darts more unusual players. Totally unreliable when it comes to finding a 180 line as you never know when he'll move from the 20's bed for no apparent reason? Mensur's of the more dangerous lower ranked players, and given his opponent [Michael Smith's] latest sulkings, this is the kind of player who could totally bamboozle bullyboy.

David Pallett is the biggest odds of your 4, yet he's one of the most care free players to grace the big stage. No stage fright from this amazingly laid back player. Be prepared for his bizarre switching from the 20's, (normally to the 18's) and the most unusual finishes known in darts. E.G. 101 left, bull, 1, bull Grin

Andrew Gilding has shown some glimpses on the big stage as to why he's not far off the top 32 bracket, thanks to his exploits on the pro tour. A gilding win over Thornton on the box could spell trouble for the remaining players in his 1/4. From what i remember he got battered by an unplayable Adrian Lewis, lost to Taylor, and an in form King, all on tv. Inbetween, he rolled over Darren Webster on the box.

One of my fav stats of gilding is from this year v gary anderson in a pro tour final.
Both players were relentless throughout the match with Ando taking it in the deciding leg:
Ando 6-5 Gilding
Ando 114 average
Gilding 107 ave

colupaul,
I fancy all your selections to win a set (at least). Of the 4, Pallett looks the most likely to lose to nil. Lets hope your rags throw in sets 1 & 3 for maximum chance of covering the h'cap. Most of the entire 1st round rags are odds on to cover their h'cap - Is greed good?

There was a time when the bookies ran scared of opening markets on the darts. Now they have every bet going, which is great news for us Darts Adicts. (One A, as a nod to the band). Wink

What I'm particularly looking forward to is when the line is under/over 2.5 on the 180s in round one (or 3.5 in R2) for some very capable players and invariably, prices between 4/5 - 4/7 are available making the bets very likely to oblige...trouble is, it's sets (in theory it can be over in 9 legs) and with my limited stakes, I need to have them in trebles at least.

Last year Gary Anderson had me seething as for once he was lethal in finishing off Mark Dudbridge in straight sets (who was one max short) and that let me down for two accum's Cry

PS - some of the regular no so big hitters can be backed to nail just two 180s as well as the newcomers that not much is known about.

Or will it be an incredible 17th World Championship for this fella?

Bad start to the tourney for me... both Kist and Newton out... Jenkins and Wright my other two picks on here... also backed Chisnall at 40s and Wade @ 16s, both each-way with the books... first leg of 'quarter winners' busted as well...

Two points down on my 1.06 lays... Brown went from 1.01 to 1.80 before finally beating Part... nice trade there for some... I put a back up at evens... van Gerwen game a non-event with highest price matched 1.10... Wes hit 1.12 before getting beat therefore my lay was not matched...

Will be laying Hamilton, Taylor, Wright and Kellett tomorrow... cheers...

Thanks ccmac... can easily do all your dough early doors in this tourny... games come thick and fast... for my 1.06 lays I'm hoping to get a 13 point profit on the outsider and a 3 point profit on the jolly... done a Lucky 15 on 4 outsiders but dropped Gilding and Pallet for Richardson and Darren Webster... probably not the best bet as they are all around the 3/1 mark... doubles and trebles may have been the way forward... anyway it's Suljovic @ 3/1, Rodriguez @ 7/2, Darren Webster @ 3/1 and Richardson @ 100/30... cheers...

Day 2: -3 points

Two 'outsiders' have won their games so far... bizarrely the two qualifiers...

Tomorrow I will be laying Pipe, Thornton, Baxter, Jenkins, Whitlock and Gary Anderson... afternoon games will have to leave the lays up with no backs as I have to pick the missus up from the airport!

Day 3 was a good day... backed Kyle Anderson in a single... Jenkins progressed... Darren Webster first winner in my Lucky 15 (1/2)...

1.06 lays... wasn't in for the Baxter game so no bet... Thornton, Jenkins and Anderson all losers... Whitlock not matched (saw over a million to back him at a price during the game Confused) ... Pipe busted at 1.06 or less, was out so no back in-running put up, nice 16 point profit...

Day 3: +13 points
Total: + 8 points

Today I will be laying Webster, Winstanley, Painter, Huybrechts, Chisnall, Wade and White... cheers...,

Day for the favs on the 1.06s... Winstanley went from 1.05 to 3.2 before winning so 3 points gained there with a back in running at evens... 6 points lost on the other matches...

Day 4: -3 points

Report colupaul December 23, 2014 8:46 AM GMT
Yeah it's all been rather predictable the last two days... the Barney game was definitely man v boy...
Report ccmac1975 December 23, 2014 1:15 PM GMT
Agree with someone who said Barney had no time for the boy after dismantled him. Was to busy milking his win. Would have been good to see him put an arm round the boy and maybe some kind words. Barney giving it the usual talk. Mind a few years ago one of his first games he averaged high was giving it this is the world championship how can other players not get up for it.

Wait til he falls behind in a game wel see the head shaking reappear Grin
Report colupaul December 23, 2014 1:23 PM GMT
There was just the briefest of handshakes wasn't there... Rowby looked a bit bewildered... maybe Barney was in the zone... the 60ish available on him prior to his first round might be made to look big...

Thornton seemed to take the antics of Rowby in his stride... interesting watch though...

Another predictable day with the favs holding sway... I'd be interested if anyone has any 2nd round picks for a potential 'outsider' Luck 15... the only one I like at present is Klassen...

Three of the 1.06 lays were losers while Mervs lay not matched though he went as low as 1.12...

Day 6: -3 points
Final total: -2 points

On the face of it not a disaster though system not rigidly stuck with... if it had been there would by my calculation been a further 4 point loss... the only player to hit 1.06 and get beat was Justin Pipe and the only player to hit 1.06 then touch evens in-running and go on to win was Dean Winstanley... worth noting though not every first round game covered so can't speak for those where both players were hard to split in the pre-match betting... I have to ask myself whether I would of been better off just backing the outsider pre-match instead of being a tad greedy in putting up a short priced lay...

Moving forward we have 16 second round matches coming up and a brief look at oddschecker shows the biggest price fav is 4/6... therefore I'm happy to cover all 16 games... however I believe that the in-running lay price should be relative to the pre-match price so I'm going to give that a bit of thought with a couple of days to the next round begins... cheers...

Ade was excellent. I thought his was amongst the best R1 performances. Anderson was worryingly poor for my bet, but two things give me cause for optimism. One is that he seemed to grow in confidence by Set 3, despite the awkward and frustrating opponent in R1. The second is his R2 opponent, Klassen. Klassen will be exactly what Anderson needs. A fast, slick operator. He'll either go out or play some excellent darts and go through. If he does go through, and I expect him to, he'll be right back on track.

Chizzy and Kim are my other two bets, and I'm pleased with how both of them played. I wouldnt fancy backing either of them to win their R2 games against Van Der Pas and White respectively, but I'm fairly confident that they will progress.
