Just a quick view on the outrights and R1 matches. First and foremost I am really looking forward to this although it's obviously completely different from the PDC. At the end of the day though this is the tournament that got me into darts in the first place and it's always good to have darts on tv.

In the outrights I haven't really got that much of an opinion. Last few years there's usually been some dangerous floaters and the forum almost landed a touch when Chisnall got beat in the final (looking back at my stats I didn't realise Chissy was marginal fav to beat Adams too). I think Waites is easily the best player but he's plenty short enough considering he seems to be a bit like Gary Anderson and never seems to perform here. Bunting is the No 1 seed but the top half of the draw looks stronger by miles than the bottom and at 6/1 he aint for me. I'm having a very small bet on Christian Kist who is the defending champ as he's been there and done it and unlike most here he is actually capable of a 95+ average. He is in the top half as well which tempers my enthusiasm a little but he should hopefully give us a run at least. Alan Norris is also of interest but again in the top half and last year he fell short v Kist in the QF and I don't think he doubles well enough to go all the way.

In R1 I fancy 4 players. 2 odds on pokes I like are Richie George & Gary Stone. George is the son of Bobby and seeded 15th on his first visit to Lakeside. He played ok at the Masters and I just think his opponent Dave Prins is no good. He played here last year and averaged 78 and if George just plays averagely he should win. I also like Gary Stone to beat Steve Douglas. Douglas had a heart attack a few weeks ago and he's not ever impressed me here anyway. Stone on the other hand got to R2 last year and if my memory serves he actually played ok v Adams but missed doubles to win crucial legs. He's had some decent results on the circuit too this year and I think he'll be too strong for Douglas who must surely be hampered by his health issues.

2 outsiders I like are only marginal rags but the seriously big priced ones are either complete no hopers or unknown to me. I like the look of Benito Van De Pas to bt Darryl Fitton at 11/10 based on the fact he is someone who might be capable of improvement. I think he got beat off MVG himself in the PDC youth semi final last year and he's obviously got some ability. Fitton is a formerly very decent player but always fell just short of winning the big one here. His doubling has gotten worse over the last 2 years at Lakeside though and while he usually still scores well I think his finishing will let him down. I also like the look of Jeffrey De Graaf who is playing here for the first time. He takes on Mr Coat himself Jan Dekker who I think is just rubbish despite once reaching the semi final here 2 years ago. He played horrendously at the GSOD and I was itching to oppose him at all costs. Looking at De Graaf's record this year he's actually won a tournament and had some good runs in other tournaments. Its not a huge price at 11/10-5/4 but I think he is improving whereas Dekker isn't.

All views are welcome as I'm not that clued up but hopefully someone can light up the opening couple of rounds like Harms and Kist did last year.

Hello Hib,

Very good write up mate and I definitely agree with De Graaf as the bet of the first round. Won a few tournaments in 2012 and Dekker looked woeful in the GSOD.

I also don't think Bunting will have it easy against Wilson, a few people I know have said he could be the 'Chizzy' of this years championships. Hits plenty of maxes, just have to see how he performs in front of the cameras.

As for an outright winner I'll take a watching brief until all first round matches have been played. Never sure how some of the "unknowns" adapt to playing on tv. I chose Kist after last years first round games, he had an excellent average and was still available at 16's. If I had to choose now I would pick O' Shea, always consistent and at 16/1 for last years runner up who had a decent 2012 I think represents decent value.

Always look forward to the BDO, it's not as slick or has as many good players as the PDC but there are still some quality players on view.

So.......Let's......play......DARTS!!

Lol great minds. I've had the same four bets in round 1.

I did wonder about Wilson Cosmo cos he was as short as 20's in the outright. I do like Bunting though very heavy scorer which isn't always the case in the BDO. As you say Kist was still a big price after R1 and he was odd in the fact I think his averages got progressively worse as the tourney went on. Always hard to say if there's another Kist lurking but it won't take much winning

Wilson's a big danger to Bunting in round one. Great record this year in minor events. Mixed bag in the Masters which i think was his first time on tv. Was poor in Zuiderduin too on Dutch TV but definitely has something about him.

Which seems a bit inaccurate given he lost to him the last time he played but hey ho.

My musings:

Firstly I think it's going to be the best BDO since Webster beat Whitlock in the final.  Some of these guys really can play and I can see 4 players in the field who will be top 20 PDC players in years to come once they have enough TV experience.

De Graaf certainly looks a great bet and his averages in the Zuiderduin should be plenty good enough to dispose of double dekker who has struggled to get the chance to show his nickname recently!  It is worth noting he beat Dekker there 5-1 averaging in the 90's with Dekker averaging in the 60's!!

Now the one point to note is the reason for Dekker's no show recently and in the past.  He did average 96 losing to Kist last year and has won a strong tournament this year (plus a pairs win with Kist) so despite HH's view that he's rubbish, that isn't the case.  He's in the final year of his 3 year degree and it is very likely that he won't produce any good darts here because of it.  His win came in the summer when away from his studies and practising properly.

The recent Czech Open is also an interesting formline with the Waites/Norris semi final producing averages of 105 and 103 respectively and Waites going on with another ton plus average in the final.  Norris also produced a 112 average and 100 average in his Zuiderduin group games before 85 averages in the semi's and final.  He could do anything but will throw in a poor match to finish any title bid you would think.

As has been alluded to, the bottom half is much the weaker and Waites' draw is an absolute belter.  Considering his quality and form I think he's a worthy 7/4 chance and unlike Anderson (who many keep comparing with) this guy has televised wins over Taylor and GSOD final and winners cheque.

Adams is in such decline that although he has a decent draw I would not be surprised to see him lose his first round against Hendriks (a big 180 hitter but very erratic)and I certainly would not fancy him getting to the semi's giving plenty of value in his 1/4.  He is 56 after all.

Buntings price is too short despite all recent form (Masters and Zuiderduin winner).  He has an absolute stinker of a draw and any average under 90 in any game could easily see him struggle, especially with the pressure coming in as the man in form.

I like a few bets having spent quite a while on this:

1st Round
5pt win De Graaf single @ 2.25
5pt double Atkins/Robson @ 1.40/1.67
1pt Hendriks to beat Adams @ 5/2
1pt Harms to beat David 3-0 @ 2/1 (David has no form of any note as far as I can see and Wesley is about the only person in the draw I am confident of an 85+ average minimum)

3rd 1/4 Winner
2pts De Graaf @ 10/1 ish
2pts Robson @ 7/1

Outright
10pts win Scott Waites @ 100/30.  That is a trade as much as anything as I could easily foresee him going very short very early.

I'm stearing well clear of robson and prins. Both players threw stinkers last world champs with 3-0 defeats. Prins match was investigated for possible match fixing and robson has also been at the centre of a storm with his old bdo buddy gary anderson. Both times the players were cleared of any wrong doing. Also robson takes on garry thompson, he of the greatest walk on song ever! Name another player with a song named after them? "the crowd goes bananas as he hits the money shot."  I'm playing in a Darts comp today with my man heydon so will miss the great moment. Hope the bastards at the beed crank up the volume for his walk on song like they do do when a dart hits the board....Thud!  170 @ 2/5? That's a market i always swerve. Even more so in the bdo. Lets hope it cops for you. It's only 3am??? nd i'm doing this via fone which means i cant see who's posted what but some excellent insights for all to see. In the ladies/womens world champs my girl Deta 11/4 outright tries to go one better this year and will be on espn v lisa @ 9.30pm. C'mon the dark destroyer x

41-11 to Texas I think. Nowhere near the points line I backed. Needed to avoid an early blowout to have a chance.

Will make it back on the darts today!
