Well happy 2013 to one and all on the darts forum and hopefully the hangovers aren't too bad by the time 8pm comes around. One game to go which is the culmination of a very entertaining 2 weeks on this forum and hopefully we can sign off on a winning note 
Michael Van Gerwen v Phil Taylor:

The final is probably the one we all wanted to see between the old master and the young apprentice. It all went off in the semi's what with 9 darters, almost another 9 darter and then Taylor almost coming to fisticuffs with Barney on stage. I love watching Van Gerwen play as hes so entertaining and in full flow he is like nothing I've seen in 20 years watching darts. The way he came back from 2 or 3 iffy legs to almost hit back to back 9 darters was incredible and I'm sure I wasnt the only one screaming go on at the tv when it was on! Its obviously his first final and it remains to be seen whether the nerves will get to him but I just think he loves playing darts and hopefully treats it as just another match. Taylor on the other hand has obviously been over the course a few times given its his 19th final. He's won 19 from 19 semi finals but he has proved vulnerable in the past in finals losing 3 of them. He's played well in his QF and SF but has showed some fragility on doubles especially when it got tight v Barney. He's also talking very negatively claiming illness and thinking about retiring etc and I dont think thats what you need going into this match. The bet I fancy for this final is just a straight up back of Van Gerwen to win the title. I think his heavy scoring will be too much for Taylor and even though he may miss some doubles I think overall he will be too strong and will win his first of probably many world titles. The Evs is all gone unfortunately but at a shade of odds on I still think he represents value.
Recommendation: 3pts win Michael Van Gerwen @ 10/11 (General)
Summary: I've had a thoroughly enjoyable fortnight with putting these up and sharing in some great laughs along the way will all the old faces and some new ones on the darts forum. He got better as the pressure intensified alun. Michael wilted unfortunately
Phil's average may not have been as high as the 2009 win vs RVB and the 2010 win against SW, but in terms of sheer determination, heart and bottle, against a rival who was hitting everything I think it might be better.

i think Phil needed someone like MVG to bring his A game to the table and the fact that people were writing him off spurred him on even more

Have some of you gone in too heavy on the dutch lad?
Watched it all. MVG lost his confidence midway through that. What happened to the heavy scoring on the treble 20? It just disappeared and was replaced with consistent 59's
MVG reminds me of as Murray or Nalbandian in tennis. first GS and you dont play your best.
I personally didn't bet on this, because I couldn't pick a winner.

He's been in 3 major finals and lost 2, probably should have lost all 3 and I think its just experience which will come for him
Nearly went 5 - 2 up. Taylor cranked it up after that though

mvg did nothing wrong for me, ok standard dropped off a little in last couple of sets but that was down to
how well phil played. As said earlier think phil may well have beaten lewis,wade,barney etc 7-0,7-1 tonight on that form.

I still can't figure out why MVG's switching was so regular, compared to in other games

he had a swagger against Lewis and and Wade but its hard to be cocky and arrogant against Taylor, he may have been in awe of Taylor. 4-2, 2 legs all was the crucial leg
MVG reminds me of Arsenal, extremely fancy until gets to the final 3rd but doesn't seem to finish as much as he should.
His finishing was good tonight at the start but once that gone he folded like a pack of old playing cards. Remember Wade took 4 sets off him averaging under 90 and Lewis had 2 darts at double tops to send him home in the semis. Taylor was never going to let him away with any mistakes. I was quite surprised he didn't romp home from 2-2. Looked only one winner at that stage.
Do you think MVG has been practicing doubling al of yesterday because everyone has been saying how bad he was at them? And neglected to practice a few trebles?
Because his doubling was excellent tonight in comparison..

thats what i said midway through the game. it seemed as if he lost confidence in the treble 20
was a great game but to be fair i think taylor putting pressure on had more to do with it than mvg bottling it.
It wasn't a classic bottle by any means. You could also put it down to Taylor being able to maintain a consistent standard over 10+ sets?
If MVG replecated his standard from the opening set, for all 10, he won easy.
Thought mvg showed enormous bottle myself. Just couldn't quite keep it together.
Phil was certainly steamrollering the lad towards the end. Turning the screw remorselessly.
First world final how many win them on their first attempt? Fine margins he had 2 seperate darts to go 5-2 up but after those missed Phil sensed blood and never took his foot off the throat
MVG won 9 legs in a row against Wade. he was unstoppable. Against Taylor he couldnt put 2-3 legs together

I think he nailed six 12-darters (or less than 12) in the last 4 sets.
im not sure anyone in the game cud have withstood that barrage from phil. was absoloutly lethal
MVG's scoring went to pot once it went 4-4. Was disappointing to watch. Phil really took confidence from it and pushed on, piling on the pressure
its like tennis at the highest level. 1 or 2 darts or 1 or 2 points here and there make a massive difference. Taylor would have gone at 5-2

Sounds about right silver. Must have averaged 105ish over those last 4 or 5 sets I think too
those who backed MVG like me had no excuse for losing money though (even though I did) as he traded below 1.3 so should have laid off the whole stake and enjoyed the match.
MVG's sensational checkouts would have destroyed most players, but not Phil.

the big players play well at the big events. the form at the other smaller events seem to mean nothing when looking at form. just look at Lewis
Anyone know how many 180s and 170+'s Taylor hit? He was off the charts in the last 3 or 4 sets
He only had 3 maxes I think in the final six sets but he hit countless 134's, 177's etc that just killed Van Gerwen
Only 5 180s all match. His 170+s late on were incessant.
The best shot he hit was the 174 from 225 to leave 51 for a break at 4-4 I think?

there were 3 sets where it was 2 legs apiece and MVG was throwing first - he lost them all and in 1 at least he had a double for the set. that is losing your bottle

i just lost half m bank on this, what a mug i am, i was going to lay it off at 4-2 but he had two darts to take it to 5-2, and was going to lay it off then but it was all too late by then. :( gut wrenching :(
taylor tonight was immense, he was shocking against barney. i just felt so sure that van gerwen would win, but didnt suspect taylor wud be hitting a 103 average in an 11set match. thats just insane.

i was exactly the same. was looking to lay at that point. was 4-2 and 2-1 and he had D19 for 5-2. would have laid off then but he was still throwing first in the next leg so let it run and again missed D16 for 5-2

I just thought i'd let it run, he was fluctuating between 1.28 and 1.35, i figured with the hold he would go sub 1.2 and would happily go green all round and enjoy the run in. But he missed both doubles, i do believe he would of won the match had he got either. But i would of greened out anyway. I missed that then i could of layed off at 1.8 but he was still a set up, and was reluctant too. Those two doubles cost me, i had 4600 on him :( well over half my bank, it was initially meant as a trade as he started so well i didnt lay off initially and then like i say waited for that moment but he missed the doubles and then found i couldnt find the right time to lay off. taylor was immense tonight though, especially towards the end. steal cant believe those two doubles, he had similar darts to go 3-1 up as well and missed a double then too.

You can never doubt the man. Saved his best for last. Who expected him to be that good? 2-0 and 4-2 down let never buckled.
I was hoping he would retire because he met his biggest challenge tonight and passed. This dispelled the myth that Taylor would not have won all those World titles if the standard was always like it is today.

Saying that, thought Van got carried away in himself with the flash and brilliant checkouts, needs to leave them behind and carry on his game. Some strange decisions going down to 19s after leaving plenty of room on t20, but hey ho, he gave as good as he had, had arrers for 5-2 and 5-3 and that was that.

i feel for you. its our own fault because there was plenty of time to go green as he traded below 1.5 for along time. I was waiting for sub1.2 like you. I had £700 on but just as I thought MVG was taking a grip of the match he threw some wayward opening darts in the legs where he was throwing first for the set and let Taylor off the hook. The 2 missed doubles were the key because at 5-2 it was definitely over. Once MVG was behind his head was gone and Taylor was relentless.
the treble 20 wasnt his friend yesterday like it was in the Q/F and S/F, he was inexplicably switching after the first dart.

It wasn't inexplicable at all. I think the main reason MVG has improved so much is because his first dart has been so good over the last few months. If you remember, before he hit his stride earlier this year he was probably the most prolific player in the game in terms of going for cover.
Last night his first dart was going a little lower than he likes far more often than in previous rounds - regardless of whether in the treble or not. Hence more cover shooting, and sometimes bull-shooting which is a trait of the Dutch players - there is some mathematical sense behind it.

thanks diktat, and i know it was stupid, id had two hours sleep from new years eve and couldnt wait to get involved in this final, i laid 4k at 2.14 as just felt MVG was ready to get off to a flyer, and it was reactionary to phills 170 CO as i wanted to get a big bet on that and just enjoy it. I should of layed off, but its a lesson learnt. Putting so much at stake was ridic, and it was either to trade, or let run, part of me felt MVG wud fly.
That said i hadnt seen his QF and SF performances, but saw Phill against Barney and towards the end he was so poor. I think the cold and tiredness was a massive factor, also towards the end Phill was ridiculous. Greed got the better of me and placing such a large bet was ridiculous.
Im interested as MVG had beaten him in a prior final, averaging 108 apparently. How come players dont get near that in these tournaments the format seems to be the same length, is it just such a big occassion do you think?

You are just being paranoid. If you had traded out then any of these nonsense fix thoughts wouldn't even be entering your head.
