Last time Germany held the Grand Depart was in 1987 and it was a 6km Prologue which was won by a Dutchman. Things were different then and Germany was actually called West Germany, there were 25 stages in the race and the first six were held in West Germany. It wasn't till the flat stage 15 that a German actually won a stage, though. Yes, Rolf Golz was a West German. Then when the Tour again visited Germany in 2005, this time for stages 7 and 8, Jan Ullrich effectively won stage 20 since Armstrong cheated. So, Germans win a stage of the Tour when it visits the German country, just not the stages on their actual soil.
It is easily understandible why Tony 'Panzerwagen' Martin is the favourite for the opening stage of this year's Tour. One of the most successful all-time riders in the TT discipline, the German powerhouse is riding on home roads and in front of a crowd with high expectations of a Germany victory. With TdF interest in Germany waning over the years, it can be understood that this might be one way the race organisers have planned to reignite interest in their race amongst the German people -- give them a German stage winner. And for the first time on home soil.
Taking into account Martin's recent Nationals win over a 48km ITT race, one would be ready to order a round of German beer to celebrate the imminent German in Germany stage winner to begin the Tour this year. However, looking closer at Martin's results this season in his pet event, and a different narrative begins to appear, one which suggests there might be value to be found elsewhere, particularly with the MOV entrant, the 30yo ESP rider Jonathan Castroviejo.
Firstly, Tony Martin is a better TT rider than Castroviejo, however this season Castroviejo beat Martin by 4secs in an 18km ITT in the Algarve at the start of the year, and Martin only beat Roglic and Kwiatkowski by 1sec in that race. Martin was then nowhere by his standards in the 14.5km ITT in Paris-Nice which ended on Mt Brouilly. Next, Martin again misfired in the 13.4km ITT in the Belgium Tour when second to Matthias Brandle by 14secs, whilst equalling the time of Wout Van Aert and Sylvain Chavanel. Last start, in the Dauphine, Martin again failed when going off at prohibitive odds over an unsuitably hilly course of 23.5kms, when getting beat by Porte by 12secs, although he did hold down the 2nd-place, comfortably. I remember saying on the Dauphine thread that it was a missed lay opportunity on Martin on that stage, since he was so cheap.
In fact, the only race Martin has won for his new KAT team was the 181km stage 2 in Valencia, when he daredevilled the 6km descent of the final climb, which they had approached twice.
The 14km out-and-back, fly-swatter-shaped course of Dusseldorf here, with the majority of the course along the Rhein River, makes the flat and straight road there an advantage for Martin's power-riding characteristic, and I think he should win. Nevertheless, Castroviejo has improved in the last two years in the TT discipline. Moreover, Castroviejo also won his Nationals race in the ITT recently, over what was a 43.1km course, and he did so by over a minute to the next Spaniard -- a dominant performance.
At 20/1 Castroviejo represents the value in the race. I think Martin should win, since he should be capable of digging down deep in front of a partisan crowd and he does enjoy the big stage, however I think Castroviejo should get onto the podium and in so-doing make both bets successful.
In conclusion; Martin to win and WIN ONLY at 2/1, Castroviejo to shorten on here and podium on an E/W basis at 20/1, which represents sensational value.
Fastest time wins this race. As CM suggests, there is some weather about. It looks like some wind also, so wind and rain, however the later riders should get the best of the conditions under the current forecast, but that can change, and it can indeed become a lottery.

Nice to have seen Castroviejo ride in the European TT Champion jersey, however it would have been nicer if it he made it look close. Seemed to have been going fast, but must have been leaking time in the wet conditions and looked hurt in the end.
Looking for the Panzerwagen to win for the Germans, now. With Kiryienka holding court, it does look better for Martin in terms of it being a power course. Rain having an influence with more than a few slides -- wonder if the GC men will go hard or ease off a little.

Tony Martin was on time coming into the strongest part of the course for him, and died toward the line. Not the way I would have liked to start the Tour, not a loss, but not exactly a win.
