Ive just been looking at this myself, try this
http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/racing/olympics/uci-confirm-rio-2016-olympic-road-race-time-trial-courses-1487 That has really good info on it and a decent profile of the course. There really is a lot of climbing especially on the final circuit, where they do a testing 8km climb and 6km descent 3 times, though there is then 20 km flat to finish! I do think the likes of GB, Spain maybe Columbia etc will make this a real test and that only the really strong climbers will survive, those 3 circuits of "Vista Chinesa" could be brutal! |

Thx, that gives a nice description of the hills, though the video isn't worth being watched. For me this looks like the usual small escape group and steady moving peloton with wearing down weaker riders on the first curcuit, while on the 2nd one we should have action from lap 1 on, probably with a new escape group. Can see Froome playing a good role here with his newly earned skills. What remains to be known is how technically difficult the downhill section is on the 2nd circuit and how likely it is wind playing a part on the coastal sections, anyone got info about that?

Looking forward enormously to this and have backed Alaphilippe, Van Avermaet and Pantano with savers on Uran, Kwietkowski, Dumoulin, and Rui Costa.

Who are the UK cycling fans most likely to rally around this year if Trott, Cavendish, Wiggins and Froome all win gold(s) in Rio? ie, which of those would end up getting the most SPOTY votes?

BB the descent is reportedly very tricky and windy, definitely not easy, so that climb and descent being done 3 times is going to be very selective, I expect a very small group to be together over the top the final time.
That climb they do three times on the final circuit has a 4km section averaging 10% so if someone like Froome, Poels, Nibali etc really attack it then only a handful maybe 5 or 6 of the real best climbers will be left, I don't see anyway the likes of Van Avermaet can stay in touch on that climb, even Alaphillipe may struggle if the real climbers put the hammer down. I was thinking POELS looked good value, was climbing better than anyone at the TDF, and showed at LBL that he has the class and know how to win a big one day race. He was generally around 25/1 last week but is now 14/1, so i've missed the value a bit! |

Will GB ride 100% for Froome? Trying to remember if he even finished the RR in London before medalling in the TT. To be fair this course is much more suited to him with all the climbing.
If Froome performs like he usually does in one day races, Yates could represent good e/w value. I also think an early break could be in play here. |
By:
Have to agree with HB regarding Poels. Proven he can win prestigious one day races and was one of the best climbers at the tour.
I think Belgium will mix things up and try to get a strong rider or two in an early break. |
By:
this early escape is of much more high profile than I'd expected
By:
Peleton look relaxed and do not seem concerned with the breakaway.
GB, Spain, Italy, Australia and France not represented in the break, so the break will be caught. Someone from the break could do a "Hayman" though if they get a big enough gap and conserve energy. |
By:
Team Gb to the front of the peleton very earlier. Froome never really dropped any of his rivals in the Tour. I wonder if he is planning on displaying his dominance on todays climbs.
By:
nugget is Froome a good price to win @ 10's?
By:
the race is definitely on now from a long way out. With the strength of the riders in the break the peleton can't let them get too much of a lead.
Very tough day. |

COME ON CHRIS
By:
Would be a big effort coming off his TdF victory to win the gold medal in the olympic road race. Not to mention he's gold medal favourite for the Time-Trial in a few days.
By:
who would be your tip for the win?
By:
Adam Yates e/w
I'm going to keep an eye on Uran to see how he's climbing too. |
By:
Fair. I'll put a small saver on him. I wouldn't ignore Chris though nug. he's genetically superior to them all
By:
Froome has never won a one day race of any note. I do admit he's a bit special though.
By:
If he can negotiate those steep descents towards the end of the race he'll be tough to beat.
By:
I agree, hence taking the 10's on him. he'll go sub 4's easily
By:
then I can remove my risk and sit on a win if he does the business in the closing stages
By:
can you summarise why Froome wouldn't win it for me? someone isn't keen on him at all. would the Tdf victory have that much impact?
