After the longest road stage of the Tour this year comes the shortest road stage, with Stage 17 from Saint-Gaudens to Saint-Lary Pla d’Adet covering a total of only 125kms, nearly half-the-distance of the previous stage.
Again, the riders begin climbing from the very beginning of the day, and the elevation rises continuously throughout the stage with initially three cat.1 climbs, of which the middle one is legendary. The cold de Peyresourde is 13.2kms long at 7% gradient, and the top reaches 1,569m. Unlike in recent past stages of the Tour which involved the col de Peyresourde as part of the parcours, this stage does not finish with a descent, but rather it is a mountaintop finish. Which makes this stage more like the 2012 Tour stage 17, when Valverde attacked from a large long-range breakaway group to salvage something for MOV that year, with his solo 35km ride to victory.
This stage looks much tougher than the previous on account of the cat.H climb to an elevation of 1,654m on Saint-Lary Pla d’Adet being the finish. At 10.2kms long and with a gradient of 8.3% it is more difficult by the early parts than by the final parts, and a point at 3kms to go looks like an ideal staging ground for a late attack by one of the principals, and it is therefore more likely to suit The Shark the best, should he be within striking distance of his fourth stage win.
Again, all will depend on who is in the long-range breakaway and the dynamics of that group. I think the breakaway is less likely to win than the previous stage as the GC fight for the podium and the top-10 is intensifying on account of the gaps getting closer, and it may be the case that under the right circumstances we find that multiple teams offer riders to work on the front of the peloton with AST, in order to keep the breakaway in much closer order. If that is the case than I believe Nibali might want to confirm his unbeatable presence in this race with another strong final climb ride to the finish for the stage win. 5/1 will be value if it gets there, and it should, but it is worth remembering that when he won in stage 13 his price IR was far superior to the 3/1 at SP. Riding strongly. May pay to keep safe.
Rafal Majka Enjoyed an easy day on the saddle when he rolled into the finish with the second of the three main SAG wagons, at +24mins. With TCS’s win with Rogers, it may be the case that their plan was to save Majka for an attempt to win here, however he may be getting tired after riding the Giro and he is just too short at ante-post for even a small bet, since he commands an early position as second favourite at 4/1 with PP. Won’t surprise with a strong performance. Watch closely.
No bets for me at ante-post, but may find a late mail special, later.
I mainly expect a fight for the Polka dot here, probably with Purito and Voeckler in a break and Tinkoff controlling it from behind with Majka attacking on the final climb as there are 50 from 80 pts of the day at stake

I've been away a few days and so missed yesterday, surprised to see TJVG lose so much time on the stage. I thought he would be stronger after the rest day, though he did have some hefty falls in the first 10 days and they maybe coming back to bite him now.
Like SP i think this will come down to a GC fight on the final climb. I think the polka dot fight will be over the first couple of climbs, as I can see Purito getting in the early break and Majka will in all likelihood follow him, I dont think the Tinkoff rider will wait until the final climb that would be too risky.
Having just watched highlights from yesterday, i'm shocked how strong Pinot looks right now. He has always been a very good climber but never been so consistent as he has the last week, he just seems to be getting stronger and stronger every day. He looked like he had everyone in trouble in the last couple of km of the climb, including Nibali, and also looked like FDJ got their team tactics spot on, with Roy sitting up at the side of the road waiting for his leader to come down a genius bit of thinking to ensure he didnt lose contact on the descent. With Pinot obviously feeling in great shape, and the way he attacked yesterday, and knowing he wants to be ahead of Valverde before the timetrial, it is clear the FDJ rider will again be going on the attack today. I don't see any reason he wont be as strong again today, and so for me he is by far the most likely winner of the stage and 11/2 looks a fair price.
Have also had a small ew on Konig at 25/1, another rider who is really flying up the climbs right now. After a relatively poor first week, he has got better each day, and may have a bit more licence to attack earlier on the final climb than Pinot will.

Would have taken that 600 for Slagter but I can't see the breakers making it far today. Katusha are messing about and we'll be on the first climb soon enough.
Been thinking of Bardet but I'm not sure yesterday was a one-off, if he's in good shape I can see the big boys giving him a bit of rope.

We might see a few time eliminations if anyone gets off the bus early. Should be safety in numbers otherwise.
Kiri gone for a long one, not sure what the plan behind that is.

nice stage! I have big wins on kirienka, herrada, de marchi and david lopez garcia and small green on the others.
Only red on Nibali and Pinot, but i will be all green soon, their odds will go to the roof
