OK, being an old geezer I have ignored The Hundred in its first 4 years. Too much style (if that is the word) and no substance. But on Test Match Special on the radio last week, the head honcho of the ECB was bigging this newish version of the game up.

He also revealed just how much money each county will receive as a result of the team franchise auction / sales. Now, although this guy was giving all the guff about 'inclusion, families, spreading the love' and a lot of other modern bu**** a bit too much, I still thought I would make an effort this year and watch 'The Hundred'.

(Now, I skipped the women's match because, and this is my PERSONAL view, I cannot seriously take to women playing footie and cricket - and a lot of other sports come to that. But that is for another day.)

Hence, I settled down this evening to watch Oval Invincibles v London Spirit. Well, it was  two hours I will never get back.

What a load of tosh. London Spirit were useless, spooning catch after catch to their opponents or simply letting a spinner surely approaching his sell-by date bamboozle them. No big hitting, no exciting dashes between wickets, no spectacular fielding on the boundary etc etc. The Test series just ended versus India had a huge amount more to it over each of the 25 days it was played.

Then the Invincibles knocked off the required, pitiful,  total with ease. In short, a terrible let down.

So, can those on here who know this new version of the game assure me that usually matches are better than tonight's dull affair? Tonight it looked just as I feared - a lot of questionable style with no substance behind it.

Also, please tell me that this whole setup has not been **** to give the Oval Invincibles third title in a row - because of London played like a side that had been 'got at!

Lastly, is The Hundred going to become like T20 sometimes is (and I like T20) - a game where the groundsmen dictate the excitement level, and possibly who wins, by preparing the pitches a certain way?

So, come on The Hundred fans, sell the game to me becuse tonight's offering has almost killed it for me right at the start - although I am going to give it a try until the end of the week.

In my opinion The Hundred is an abomination Knighty.  It has to take place in August so that all the kids can go as it's the school holidays and therefore justify the ECB's investment in it and for them to claim what a success it is. It ruins the County season as the Championship is put on hold again and the One Day Cup is seen as an irrelevance instead of the Blue Riband event it used to be when it was the Gillette Cup/Nat West Trophy. Now that competition is shorn of the top players who go chasing the franchise money, the crying shame is that the One Day Cup has had some cracking cricket played in it the last few years but it is largely ignored by the media.

The Counties in general hate it as well but don't make a fuss as they get a nice earner out of it, which in todays cash strapped climate is no bad thing.

There is nothing wrong at all in trying to get kids interested in the game, but we already had the successful T20 Blast which is capable of doing that. They should really have promoted that competition a lot more and insisted that the BBC or other free to view channel be allowed to show games.

Tonights match was laughable, i said on the other thread it was like a pub game. A damp squib after all the big build up. You very rarely get big scores like you do in 20/20 games.

I would never defend the Hundred but the women's game yesterday was excellent and for a Langer team the Spirit were a total embarrassment
Report The Knight August 6, 2025 10:57 AM BST
Totally agree with all of that, Dixie...

Sadly, the whole of the UK seems to have a marketing strategy based on 'yoof'. Totally daft, of course. What used to happen when the world was sane, was that a product (from cricket to underwear) was presented as it was, and then it met success or failure based on its merits. Thus, on the whole, quality survived.

Now, though, we see many products invented to sell to a certain group of people.

Also, I noted last night how the coach of the London side (Langer) briefly spoke about how little preparation time he had had with his players. That seems hugely disrespectful to me. Players will be earning fortunes here and the franchises are selling for huge money, yet the same players cannot be bothered (due to greed) to turn up until two days before. If I owned one one the franchises I'd be having a very stern word!!

Lastly, why the ECB did not concentrate on T20 (which works) I do not know.

It's not everyone's cup of tea The Knight for sure and neither is the great IPL either but please don't judge anything you ever get involved in over one viewing and it's wrong to start comparing to test matches that happened a day ago and ended up being one of the best on record for both thrills and excitement.

Bear in mind the contrary will have happened to someone somewhere in that they'd have watched a fantastic ODI that went to the wire with the usual chaos that brings and then thought i know i'll watch this test match starting tomorrow which ended up being the most tedious affair on record , so consequently they ended up asking the same questions as yourself in reverse.

In my view give it half a dozen games but also accept the format for what's required to be successful and NEVER spend a second comparing it to test cricket because it isn't , it's practically a different sport.

Good luck today  Happy
Report Hayden August 6, 2025 11:15 AM BST
In fairness though i should have added i'm a trader and all formats come alike to me as they're a vehicle to make money as the sport largely is so unpredictable , so a T20 match between Afghanistan vs Bangladesh would be as exciting a prospect to me as any match up and format you care to name as i know i've an outstanding chance of making money.

I'd include the Ladies in my argument because the graph spikes can be as spectacular as the men , as for the standard of cricket who cares , that's the key when comparing both sides of the debate in that we're comparing viewing vs punting so our debate isn't like for like.

So basically ignore everything i've posted   Grin

HaydenExcitedLaughLaugh The problem in last night's game was for some inexplicable reason London Spirit decided to bat first, big mistake, then having done that decided not to let Warner have any balls in the power play, big mistake, then when there was a clear not out decision for LBW decided not to appeal, big mistake. Obviously  not a set up so the invincible would win but you can understand the frustration, also Langer really does not need to tell Warner and Co how to bat

The T20 was and still is a different form of cricket that gets those with short attention spans involved in the game. Nothing wrong with that and i enjoy watching it as much as the next man. But The Hundred leaves me cold, there was no need for it. All that was needed was for the T20 to be pushed and marketed more and maybe rescheduled to run for the whole of August with all counties involved as at present. Then they could have had the One Day cup running in the earlier part of the season concurrent with the Championship.

Of course because the domestic T20 is played between the county teams, we have someone to support. Unlike The Hundred -how can you possibly cheer on a recently formed franchise with no history or having a personal connection to it? That is what i really object to. It's all about the money and basically the cricketing equivalent of Soccer Aid only instead of charities, the counties get a pay day which is the only good thing to come of it.

I grew up watching Kent play every other county at least once in the Championship as well as the John Player League each season. We also had the B & H Cup and the Gillette/Nat West Trophy competitions. The season was constantly engrossing. Now we are slowly seeing the eradication of the county game in this country and it depresses me no end.

I see your boys got off to a winning start yesterday, even though Tilak got a duck. Kent are in the other group so we can't meet each other until the knockouts.
Our first game is tomorrow against Sussex at Arundel, what a splendid setting for cricket.

The sales of six of the eight franchises in The Hundred were completed last month, with Oval Invincibles and Trent Rockets still in the process of being sold.

Four teams are, or will be, owned by companies with stakes in Indian Premier League (IPL) sides, while the other four are supported by American investment.

Investors will take operational control from 1 October, meaning they will have no direct involvement in this year's competition.

Here is a list of the ownership breakdown across each team that competes in The Hundred:

Birmingham Phoenix are part-owned by American investment group Knighthead Capital Management, who have a 49% stake. Knighthead also own Birmingham City Football Club. Warwickshire County Cricket Club retained 51% ownership.

London Spirit also have an American-based minority shareholder in Tech Titans (49%). Marylebone Cricket Club own the majority 51%.

Indian company RPSG Group has purchased 70% of Manchester Originals. Lancashire Cricket Club own the other 30%. RPSG's portfolio of investments include IPL side Lucknow Super Giants and Durban's Super Giants in the SA20.

Northern Superchargers were purchased by The Sun Group, who paid just over £100m for a 100% stake. They also own IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa.

Reliance Industries Limited, owned by the Indian multi-billionaire Ambani family, have agreed to a 49% sake in Oval Invincibles. This is still to be completed. Surrey will retain the majority 51%. Reliance also own IPL team Mumbai Indians.

GMR Group, who also own IPL outfit Delhi Capitals and Hampshire, have bought a 49% stake in Southern Brave.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly's company Cain International has agreed to buy a 49% share of Trent Rockets, but this is yet to be completed. Nottinghamshire Cricket Club will retain control of the other 51%.

American group Washington Freedom have a 50% stake of Welsh Fire. Host county Glamorgan own the other half.

The millions generated by the sale of teams in The Hundred franchise should "secure the future of counties for a generation", says departing Leicestershire chief executive Sean Jarvis.

Richard Gould, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), told BBC's Test Match Special this week that Leicestershire would receive £28m following the sales which raised about £520m.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leicestershire, Jarvis said that was the figure he was expecting to arrive at the club - but warned it must be invested soundly.

"Financially it has been incredibly difficult for a club of our size to compete," he said.

"£28m is the figure that has been bandied about. We have no reason to not believe that and we should see £28m come to Leicestershire.

"Leicestershire can secure its future for more than a generation if it is spent wisely. The long-term can be really healthy and successful.

"What it must not do is fritter away the money - £28m can easily be wasted as you have seen in other sports."
Report The Dragon August 6, 2025 7:30 PM BST
Change is coming then.

How much - and exactly what that change looks like - remains to be seen but what we do know is that until the ECB's broadcast deal with Sky finishes at the end of the 2028 season, no more teams will be added.

However, with Vikram Banerjee, managing director of The Hundred, saying in February that expanding the competition in future was a "no-brainer", additional franchises is one significant change highly likely to be considered at some stage.

The number of teams might not differ but come next year, some may have new identities.

Should the deals for stakes in Invincibles and Rockets be rubber-stamped, four Hundred sides will be at least partially influenced by Indian Premier League (IPL) owners.

The Sun Group, owner of IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad, has paid just over £100m for a 100% stake in Northern Superchargers.

Indian company RPSG Group, which owns Lucknow Super Giants, has purchased 70% of Manchester Originals, while GMR Group, which owns Delhi Capitals, has bought 49% in Southern Brave.

Reliance Industries Limited, owned by the multi-billionaire Ambani family who control Mumbai Indians, is also set to purchase a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles.

The ECB has already received applications for the names of Superchargers and Originals to be changed.

Reports, external say RPSG Group plan to bring the latter in line with their teams in Lucknow and Durban by renaming them Manchester Super Giants before the 2026 season.

It would be no surprise to see Invincibles, Superchargers and Brave go the same way.

Following the templates they've used in franchise leagues in South Africa, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, it could be a warm welcome to MI Oval, Sunrisers Northern and Southern Capitals.

Player salaries have increased for this year's tournament, with the top men's players now earning up to £200,000, up by 60%, while leading women's salaries have risen 30% to £65,000.

But, with fresh investment, there is the potential for further increases to help attract the world's best short-form players - something the men's tournament has struggled with amid competition from the Caribbean Premier League and Major League Cricket in recent years.

Replacing the current draft system with something closer to the IPL auction might enable that, and the ECB announcing a new The Hundred Board - which will include representatives of the investors and host counties - with "delegated authority" over player salaries and the draft, opens the door to that possibility.

The ECB does still own the competition itself and have control over the regulations and length of the window in which it is played.

But if their new partners push to ditch the 100-ball format, played solely in the UK, in favour of the globally popular T20, or want six weeks rather than four following a future expansion, tough decisions - guaranteed to be unpopular with one group or another - will have to be made.

Meanwhile, ECB chief executive Richard Gould has hinted "de-coupling" some women's and men's matches will be considered.

Double-headers have been the norm since The Hundred began in 2021 and Gould says a capacity crowd for a women's game is a target within "the next couple of years".

A comfortable win for Hants Hayden, so they are well on the way to the knockouts. Can't say the same for Kent i'm afraid, played well all day and somehow let Sussex put on an unbroken 8th wicket partnership of 88 in 11 overs to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Poor death bowling really to blame.

Weatherly can certainly bat but never really seems to have cemented a place in the first team, he was on loan for a few months at Kent a few years back and seemed to always get out in the 30s from memory. Played well against Kent before though !

Well, almost a week done in 'The Hundred' and to wrap up my original comments, I still do not think it is very good.

It just seems an out of shape format and, to me, some of the players do not seem fully committed.

Lastly, the wicket keeper of the Oval Invincibles must have the loudest voice in cricket. His initial appeal is bad enough but then he starts screeching like a wounded banshee. Sorry guys, its Test Matches, County Championship and T20 for me....

It’s really strange they not only changed the overs 120 to 100,but then franchised the teams to cities.

Most people are happy with there counties, they could have combined smaller counties as 1 team.

Everyone just thinks Manchester is Lancashire and so on.

In footy,Manchester Wednesday, wouldn’t get the same loyalty as the already exsisting teams.

Someone on racing thread saying itv dumb racing down.

This takes it to a new level, they cross out the player on the scorecard once he’s out, just in case you think he’s not.
Then first innings scoreboard is counted up,2nd innings is counted down.

You can’t work out how many runs they ve scored.

Early wickets, then a fight-back and big hitting. Great catching and a thrilling finish.

BUT, surely the boundary was well short on one side?

Please tell me that after what seemed to be a low-key start to the competition last week, the powers that be have not had the size of the outfield manipulated to give us a more entertaining game?

I am no conspiracy theorist but with so much big money being invested in this new format and a pretty drab start, I would not be totally surprised if the cash has not spoken and, lo and behold, we get a proper game!!!

Watched tonight's game (Thursday). I just do not understand how the franchise sale for this form of the game has brought in so much money. There is nothing I have seen that merits the millions being invested.

It seems this last week of the regular season was a waste of time anyway, as the top three sides had already qualified - for the 'play-offs' I presume?

I can well imagine that the new money will want the game revamped so that there is jeopardy right to the last regular match. But if I was a franchise holder (and had invested for genuine reasons - IE not money laundering) I would shudder at something the commentators said tonight.

OK, the commentators and pundits cannot shut up for one single second and so do come out with any old dribble lest there is 5 seconds of silence, but, apparently, the pattern in these games is for any children there to go home before the second innings of the men's game starts!

For gawd's sake, that says a great deal does it not?

Very few there for the sport but, instead, to shout, pose and wave about various stuff. The crowd at all of the games have always made me feel they are there 'to have a good time' - come what may and whatever was served up to them would suffice - bit like the crowd in Rome's colosseum thousands of years ago!!

This is not how to promote a sport long-term. Attention spans of the young are already very short and having them depart halfway through the men's game will not mean long-term interest is created.

I hate saying this, but I do hope 'The Hundred'  falls flat on its gimmicky face and the ECB wakes up to how T20 is the shortest form of the game required.

Rant over and I will now leave The Hundred to its own devices...

Yep,

I read some geezer called Bannerjee or Mukherjee something pretty Welsh soundingWhoops he might be a Welsh Fire chap wanted to see tribalism come into The Hundred similar to football with people following their  “ teams “ around the country and creating atmosphere.

It is clear to me these people do not understand cricket or its traditions, certainly not English traditions. For a start there is little “ hatred “ in cricket. We loved to cheer when a great batsman gets out but that is tinged with not seeing a great batsman bat. Most people loved Siraj this Summer because it meant something to him, the passion we all share.

Franchise cricket is about money. It’s just not cricket.

Now he has been made MD for The Hundred by the ECB and hilariously thinks this hit and giggle abomination is going to become the annual must see sporting event of the summer. How on earth he gets the impression that it's becoming more "tribal" because a few spectators are wearing home colours is beyond me.

There is no love for franchise cricket in this country, we follow our national or county team, not a bunch of interchangeable mercenaries.
