still there at lunch, needs another 34
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 11:08 AM BST
626 runs in 4 sessions ,
Report Whisperingdeath July 7, 2025 11:26 AM BST
Troubling this but not Mulder’s  fault.
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 11:47 AM BST
cant believe s africa declaredSad
Report Whisperingdeath July 7, 2025 11:47 AM BST
What?

He declared himself!

I would not be happy as a cricket fan to take Lara’s record but for the Country if South Africa it would have been huge!

Too guy. Somebody should have told him to go for it.

Day 2 Session 2. Plenty of time.

Poor decision by Mulder and somebody else really should have stopped him doing this. Perhaps he felt it was not right to break Lara’s record against Zim.
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 11:51 AM BST
staggered, i honestly didnt think it would ever  be broken , even by todays standards , but fuly expected it to go today
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 11:54 AM BST
if i recal correctly, Laras was a bit selfish wasnt it , they went for the runs instead of trying to win the match v eng which ended a boring draw . ( might be wrong )
Report JerryHatrick July 7, 2025 12:21 PM BST
Lara must have contacted SA paymasters the BCCI to intervene
Report Hayden July 7, 2025 12:51 PM BST
Test average 26 before this innings
Report JerryHatrick July 7, 2025 12:57 PM BST
He will regret that for the rest of his life, especially since he is captain & had total control of the declaration
Report Whisperingdeath July 7, 2025 1:02 PM BST
Agreed but maybe he has too much respect for the game and its history
Report Whisperingdeath July 7, 2025 3:20 PM BST
All out in 42 overs with 21 left remaining today DAY 2

Want to know what Mulder was thinking by declaring! I really can only think he felt he was not worthy to hold such a record and he would be right but he should have been selfish for his country,
Report JerryHatrick July 7, 2025 5:37 PM BST
South Africa's Wiaan Mulder said it is "exactly the way it should be" for Brian Lara to hold on to his record for the highest individual score in a Test innings.
"And secondly Brian Lara is a legend, let's be real. He got 400 against England and for someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special.

"If I get the chance again I'd probably do the same thing. I was speaking to our coach Shukri Conrad and he kind of said to me, 'Listen, let the legends keep the really big scores'.

"And you never know what my fate or whatever you want to call it, or what's destined for me, but I think Brian Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be."
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 6:25 PM BST
wrong decision imho, even though zim was a weak bowling team, you still need to score the runs , and as i said earlier laras was a very selfish knock , haydens 2nd highest score scored his v zim and no way he wouldnt have beaten it if he hadnt got out
Report JerryHatrick July 7, 2025 6:27 PM BST
Lara milked that 400 and 40 overs were from Trescothick and Vaughan!
Report brentford July 7, 2025 6:33 PM BST
Classy gesture from him and also giving his team the best chance of winning - would have looked ridiculously out of place as the holder of the record frankly (though would be have been quite funny in the context of one of TMS comms saying he was really a No.8 recently..)...didn't have to of course and maybe would have got out trying for that matter.
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 6:56 PM BST
adnire him for his gesture, but he didnt do it for his team, it was lunch on 2 day really no way they would declare then in normal circumstances, yes laras runs in the end was friendly bowling
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 7:07 PM BST
i really think he will regret this , and silly to listen to the coach/manager , players these days score runs take wickets , team runs , records left right and centre , against weaken teams , .
Report brentford July 7, 2025 7:18 PM BST
lunch on day 2 but they already had 626 on the board, how many did they want ?

no definitive right or wrong in it..I just thought it showed some class and respect for the game..
Report elisjohn July 7, 2025 7:43 PM BST
ps whispering,  do you reckon that 9 on here on the draw  next test  eng v india is worth backing
Report Whisperingdeath July 8, 2025 1:13 AM BST
Only as a Hail Mary elis,

I backed at 9 and layed England at 1.98

History does not support the bet

Really not sure what will happen in this game. Too many variables to bet before lunch.

I think it could be a belter of a pitch.

It could be spicy first up or swing in the evening.

They could leave 10mm of grass on it but that is akin to playing Russian Roulette and dumb.
