i did barstool - played for New Victoria- captained them for sometime before i moved to Manchester in 85.

Did u play for rufford during that period?

Played at New Victoria many times in the 70s and 80s for both Bretherton and then Rufford from about 1990.

Phil Davey moved from New Vic to Rufford and still see him watching the odd game. Seem to remember a tall white haired spin bowler who wore black framed specs. Your opening bowler was a fine player think his name was Peter Hames. Lame as a duck now but he did play on for a long time bowling off two strides. Good times.

Started playing for Bretherton about 1973 after I met my now wife. Her brother Eric Bentham asked me to sign on and I played my last game aged 58.

No helmets back the and all the kit was in a big army canvas bag. How times have change.

Never much bounce at the wreck was there. Changed in the old library and the pub at the roundabout provided the teas.

Maybe we played against each other back in the day.

Didnt know Phil Davey but i played from around late 70,s to mid 80s so maybe he was after me. My brother also played for Maghull during a similiar time period

We were a bit of a yo yo team when i played not good enough for div 1 but good enough to be top of div 2. i joined them from Southport and birkdale team after i met my first wife who lived in Crossons. So New Vic became my local team as she lived just around the corner from the ground.

I remember Peter Hames well big hearted big fast bowler who was a great guy but very erratic. He could hit a ball too. Captain when i first joined was a guy called Henry grey hair dark glasses so hes probably the guy you referred to. My first game was for the second team v Tarleton away hit 62 no so was immeditaley promoted to the first team.

My form for the first team was varied and i moved away with work to Manchester in 85.

Had many happy days and times playing for New Vic and this brings back many memories of , as you say ,a different era that has long passed us by.

I moved to Cheshire in 1997 when i met my second wife and sadly never played since. My boys did play though and it was great following them around watching them play in Northwich and the local district leagues.

I loved my playing days and still miss the comradery and great experiences that cricket brings.

i stick to watching now as i have recently retired.

shd have added when i moved to manchester i continued to play crickert. started at sale moor but it was a cliche so couldnt get in.

moved to shell carrington were i had wonderful years becoming first team captain and enjoying many happy seasons playing cricket in the south manchester league and in north manchester

Rufford 258/8 45 overs. (James Du Toit 148) Our overseas player (SA), his 5th century this season for us and passed a 1000 runs yesterday.

Penrith 160 all out 36.3 overs.

We are in the Palace Shield Premier division Dragon, 8 divisions in the league. Covers North and West Lancs and Cumbria. Top 2 teams go into the Northern league. Barrow and Netherfield went up last year, so two of the longer trips out for a season at least. Morecombe, Lancaster, Preston, Heysham, Fylde, among others in the league, so a bit more travelling than in the old days. Just 3 home games left, they are against---

Aug 23 Burnside (Kendal)

Aug 30 Fylde

Sep 13 Westgate (lancaster)

Great if you could get down sometime, nice ground, plenty of seating outside, good bar and we get decent local support.

gosh rufford have gone a long way since the 80s in the S&D League. id deffo love to come down. im away in malta in september and cant do 30th as have a family committment. might be able to do the 23 aug so will check with mrs d . will u be at that fixture?

yes treble and patent yesterday was very nice. Had a few good wins on the horses too. Not so good on the Hundred.

my son in law is from todermorrden ( Lancs League) so we are going to watch wilsden on 17 aug - pretty decent standard- his dad is chairmen of the club

Dogs more than welcome, we get quite a few down on match days with their owners. Even have water bowls for them.

I see Kent's two teenage openers put on 155 for the first wicket against Lancs B today.

Remember the name Ben Dawkins, this lad is tipped to go far.

Will keep an eye out for him Dixie , looks like we're giving Surrey a roasting today so far touch wood , Manny Lumsden is only 16 and making just his 2nd first class start has done exceptionally well in both games so rooting for him especially having been born in the county.

We had an all seam attack of under 20yo vs Glamorgan earlier in comp so things looking rosy i hope.

One good thing about the 50 over cup is that it gives the young players a chance to show their worth.

Thats correct barstool, its about the only good thing that the Hundred can be credited with, allowing youngsters first team experience whilst the mercenaries are away playing in their pyjamas.

Some very good cricket has been played but alas we see little coverage of it in the media.

Looks like your boys will qualify ok Hayden, they absolutely hammered Surrey today. Can't say the same for Kent (or Lancs), either county would need to win all remaining games by the look of it.

Could look different if they win their game in hand vs Middlesex though Dixie , a must win game if just for starters.

oh the irony ....what with jimmy jumping for joy in leeds yesterday . whilst at the ground that bears  his name proudly lancs have another ordinary day of bowling and another defeat. one more 4 day  dead rubber to go and thats it for the year . 2025 lancs website highlights anyone ?

Certainly easier barstool but myself i use the strike rate per 100 balls decimal anyway whatever the format be it team score or batsman's strike rate , just the way my brain works.

Still no idea how Lanc's lost to Middlesex yesterday from the position they were in but having a lot to play for certainly would have helped Middlesex , hopefully they exit in the 1/4 final though.

Looks like a wet Saturday afternoon for the local cricket. Might get a 20 over game in if both captains can agree.

With the T20 Blast resuming next weekend , how typical that the weather patterns have changed now after such a dry summer.

Let us hope the rain stays away from OT next Saturday to allow a full game to take place.

It's a disgrace that we have had a 7 week gap between the Group games and the QF , all to accommodate the bleedin' Hundred.

Next season it looks like sense will prevail as plans are to have the knockout stages follow straight on from the groups (3 groups of 6 counties).

Agree mate, it has ruined the British cricket season and can only succeed in lowering standards. How on earth can we produce good county cricketers when the have to play in the most of their games in spring or late summer.

It does not make any sense unless of course money is your only consideration.

Good win for Rufford in a low scoring game at Eccleston yesterday. Tight finish won by 12 runs.

Thats what you get for having a  woman on DRS Dragon !  Terrible decision imo, but if they are in any doubt has to stay with umpire on the field i suppose.

Biggest bugbear is with the ECB and the scheduling (yet again). Lancs had half a team missing due to the SA series, seems unfair.
Why they allowed such a clash is beyond me and shows how inept they are.

Worst schedule planning i've seen since following the sport , brainless.

Really felt for Lanky , by comparison we had Fortuin needing to come back from Manchester last night and obviously Dawson but Lanky really hard done by , add that to the Livi misfortune and they'll feel it hasn't been their day through absolutely no fault of their own.

Fair comment Dragon but the least you expect is to be able to select your best X1 together with a fair call from the officials , then if the fielding costs you can take it on the chin.

When 100-1 after 8 overs around 220 would have to be the target from there so that's when a big advantage was lost i'd say.

Onwards and upwards to the final next Saturday vs Worcester in Nottingham , it's an 11am start so hope we chase as can't even watch batting first with these morning starts when the game can be lost but not won.

That Livingstone review was dreadful, just what was she doing saying "I can clearly see a gap between bat and ball".

Keep the lady officials to Ladies cricket where such incompetence will not matter as much.

Lancashire said they had submitted a complaint to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) about the decision which saw Livingstone given out for 29.

The club said they have "formally expressed disappointment" to the governing body.

Looks awful forecast for the local cricket tomorrow. A twenty over game probably best we can hope for.

Hi Dragon, won 4 of last 5. Needed 3 points yesterday against bottom of league to stay up and game washed out, any of 6 teams could have gone down had the games been on. So the status quo remained and we have gone down to div 1. Very unfortunate but we paid the price for a bad start. The seconds got promoted again so some good news. Hopefully back up next year.

Poor day with the football and horses too hope you fared a bit better.

Lancashire finished 5th of 8 in Div 2 winning just 3 matches.

Too much one day cricket taking a chunk of talent away does not help of course but it does highlight the lack of quality overall in the squad.

Hope some young talent emerges for next season.

as for Lancashire it was probably the worts performance i have seen  in a very very long time.

Went to Stanley Park at Blackpool yesterday to watch Blackpool 2nd team play Rufford.

My first visit and what a lovely ground it is. Had a  Sunday roast beef roast with all the trimmings for £14.50. Too much to eat in all honesty. Lot of real ales etc to

choose from. Bought a round of 3 pints of Bowland Brewery Hen Harrier and a pint of diet coke for £14. So not bad either.

Only downside was losing by 18 runs.

They're on You Tube today against Notts at Farington Cricket Ground, Preston. Not a bad start but they're a bit loose at the moment.

Spoke too soon - half the side gone in the last 40 minutes !

Good win against Notts and 3 out of 4 now.

After a bright start to the season Lancs have really gone downhill. What is the major factor in this loss of form (if there is one) ?

From a selfish point of view i hope they are not much better next week when they visit Canterbury

Kent will need a win then as it looks as though they are making a right horlicks of their current game at Derby and will probably be back in 3rd place should Northants win at Worcester today/tomorrow as looks likely. Kent "rested" virtually their whole seam attack from last week for this game, Mahmud excepted, strange decision

141 all out in 41 overs.

Major factor is that without the test/1 day specialists they are a very poor bunch.

Not sure where new blood will come from within the county, the younger players are not delivering.

Do not worry about them hitting form at Kent Dixie it just is not going to happen with this lot.

Well Lancs players have a habit of overperforming against Kent and they are surely due a good performance.
Obviously batting is their big issue but they do have two of the six top wicket takers in the division this season.

Kent shot themselves in the foot in this current game against Derby with their bowling selection, leaving both Milnes and Dudgeon out was a big mistake as they are the two that have taken most wickets this season. But they so nearly salvaged a draw, losing with just 15 balls to go after a heroic effort by the tail , the last five wickets lasted for  82 overs between them whereas the first five only lasted 13 overs A pathetic effort by our top order. The usually reliable Compton played two poor shots in the game and Zak Crawley looks totally shot, i would be tempted to leave him out next week ( he's never really been the same since playing bazball imo). 

Northampton now have a two point advantage in the promotion race and it's all to play for.
