Pope gets an unparalleled worldie review first up (>2.5m down wicket), then an umpire's call. Out twice in three deliveries.
Root then gone LBW without the entirety of the ball in line with stumps when pitching, when hitting pad, or when hitting stumps

some good running by Eng...still not sure what wins this..250-260 certainly feels very defendable but as long way from bullet proof..played a lot better than it should with the size of those cracks..

Poor shot from Crawley. Chance is a second innings hundred thrown away.
He is developing into a good opener however. England have been impressive after such a demoralising defeat

How is the human eye supposed to deal with such close decisions? Good decision by Umpire re Stokes….. How Ironic!
Interesting to hear his views on that!

Umpires used to make big calls in tennis, they're still there but their role is hugely diminished.
DRS has already done that to standing umps in cricket, just not as significantly - and I could make a decent case that if they invented the game today, there would be one and they'd be more akin to a tennis ump.
Hey ho, there a far bigger hills on which I'd die in this world so I'm happy to acquiesce.

They expect an Umpire to call a tight decision but they did even realise that was pad first. Umpires are human. Technology is pretty damn good gif our sport.

He was never given out lbw in Pakistan until, can’t remember exactly either a World Cup match with neutral umpires or a Test Match with neutral umpires
I am not saying we are in football stupidity territory by any means but we are arguing over minutiae, which, is ashley great as we can without vitriol unlike football

Yes apt we are …… and also put my money on Engerlund so I am very nervous and posting to take my mind off things as I don’t smoke but if I did I would smoke more Embassy’s than Hurricane Higgins and the SAS combined!

If you're still on England at 3.8 then that's a lovely (albeit nerve-wracking) spot to be in.
Such a strange pitch, I'd like to set 300.
Our bowlers remain inexperienced, regardless of how well they bowled first up.

Bashir (who's only played seven or eight matches in his career) might essentially have had to bowl 75 overs in succession...and have a quick bat himself in between

more to do with Foakes having to try and farm it tbf apt' - he's not a natural big shot player either..
pity Robinson couldn't have hung around a bit longer for him when he wouldn't have had to farm at least...

any news on Gough and Harmy talking up a 50 or 60 run lead as being massive..
game lost (probably) last night when Yadav helped steer it through when England were absolutely all over India...bit of a window today @ 3 down on the back of Crawley's knock as well...still deserve some credit again for competing so hard for much of the game when over matched in these conditions...
aside from the start to this chase - the morning session was easiest for batting in terms of balls mis-behaving even when the new one was taken..

They needed a 100 lead, but couldn't blast out the last three, and then followed it up with another horrible collapse. India then got off to a flyer, and the game is almost over. At least they will have another day off.

since England won in India in 2012/2013 with arguably England's best side of the modern era.. India have won 16 (sixteen) consecutive home series...
since McCullum and Stokes took over they hadn't lost a series prior to this one..

Aside from usual suspects who would complain at their grandchild's christening...I think what gets anyone who watches us is that we are soooooooooo close.
We've been favourites in each blooming match, in India! (I'd wager plenty that no other side has done that since that 2012 series you mention - and maybe we didn't in that one)
And we have a side made up of several very rough diamonds. Crikey, Bashir was playing club cricket six months ago
And we're missing one of the most promising Test batters in all of cricket. Not a stretch to think he'd have dropped at least one match-turner, especially when compared to JB.

yep, I think the inexperience of the spinners especially makes it impressive...massive credit for the handling of them for the most part, though Bashir especially looks quite a talent..

They're (so far) just about finding a way to stay ahead of our imposters.
Jaiswal is obscene & Jadeja - in these conditions - is the most valuable cricketer alive.
Incredible series, I wish it would go on and on.
(And start at 8am, not 4am)

yep Jaiswal looks scary for every other nation in multiple formats...
Jurel played a blinder in this test match to date with the bat with minimal experience... (if that doesn't get him, nothing will..)

Those cheap 40 runs looked bad at the time, even worse now.
It's all very well praising England, but they quickly turned a winning position into a losing one. Given the position India found themselves in 5 wickets is a relatively comfortable win.

I agree a couple of lame finishes from England but it is no exaggeration that either side could possibly have ended 4-0 up at this stage.
England have done wonderfully well imho given what they have in their armoury. The young spinners have been a revelation and a drill isn’t call by Key and his team.
Our openers have performed better than expected. Root is pure class but has only come to the party in the first innings.
The middle order has let us down to a degree and Brook is absent. Remove YJB and put in Brook is one thing and also possibly Will Jack ( can’t remember why he is not here ).
All in all I think England have given us something to be proud of and our disappointment is merely a rejection of our hopes and aspirations.
Sadly the Bazball counter attack was missing yesterday at the very time it was needed.
I still think India and Rohit in particular were rattled in the first three Test’s.
Lest we forget India were without Kohli, Shami, Rahul, PANT ffs and Bumrah in this match. Jaiswal came of age, Jurel looks a Test player as does Safaraz in hone conditions
We should not get too despondent. It has been a brilliant series to watch with plenty of swings and they have Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep, who up to this point were relatively out bowled by our kids! Stats wise anyway.

As with every series the performance / outcome is partly measured on expectation levels so with that in mind even if England lose 4-1 i'd say the team have performed with some credit simply by keeping most tests competitive at various stages.
Certainly no need for any knee-jerking reaction and for me it's a tour to take the positives out of , build on the youthful promise and accept the realization that this is a series lost in India's backyard , so keep everything in perspective.
Good luck in the final test guys

Sounds as though we've been under the cosh but tidy early positioning on the draw.
First hour or two been amongst the toughest all series so be great to see off Bumrah's first go

I thought England battled so well but gave away two wickets.
I’ve piled into the runs market based on the pitch and England being lucky against the new ball.
o325-350 is my current range. I expect Root to come good in this wicket.

They should all bat well in this. Shame it is slightly slow. Got 9.4 on the draw but cannot see that happening although it could flatten out and two big innings might help the draw price

Three reviews torched in twelve deliveries must be a Test record.
Both LBWs looked plum and who's ever nicked one and not known (unless bat hits pad/wicket simultaneously).
Long road back to a competitive match now.

Jaiswal needs 21 more runs to become the second Indian ever (after Gavaskar) to score 700 runs in a series.
None for Sachin, Sehwag, Dravid etc etc

All started with Popes run out, err stumping. No need last over before lunch. Then in come the middle order dominoes. Followed by talk and bluster.
England need to get a grip.
Going from exiting to a laughing stock.

That wax a shocker. Agreed with the brain fart from Pope. What was he thinking. I said it was a good pitch! Going to enjoy the z Indian batting now. Shame as we put up a good fight for most of this series

Acar Patel could not get a game. They unearthed Jaiswal, Dhurel, Khan and saw Gill and Kuldeep establish themselves.
If you suppress the disappoint for a short time I will tell you this team of England lest we forget put India and Rohit Sharma on the back foot and even had Ashwin baffled for a short time.
England had opportunities to win the three last Tests and lost them. I. Winning the toss they had an opportunity to do something in this test but sadly failed miserably.
Go back and look at some of the press after the first two tests. The innings of Pope then Duckett almost had Sharma in a loop. Our boys were more successful than India’s rightly vaunted spin twins.
We have come closer to any team to beat I dis since Swann and Panesar.
Credit to Stokes
Our middle order did not perform
Our bowlers ( seamers ) were relatively toothless
Our young charges did very well but were up against Ashwin, Jadeja and now Kuldeep!
Rather than being frustrated just enjoy the cricket
Oh and FFS watching Bumrah bowl! I got really excited watching Rabada when he burst on the scene but Bumrah is unique. Enjoy him while he is around.
Our team needs new blood for sure but they have acquitted themselves well

Was on the Fizz last night but unlike Percy Fender could not report for duty so did not see the carnage but the remarks from my previous post stands.
Both Harmison and Gough on the money. England have done well but missed key opportunities. They expressed the view that “ this is the way we play “ should be reviewed.
I think the middle order needs attention. Not sure Pope us ready for 3, maybe India are just too good for anyone at home so perhaps stick with him at 3 and Brook at 5. No place for Bairstow for me except possibly as WK but I would retain Foden and give him a chance to come good with the bat. He can bat.
Bowling wise I really do not have a clue where we go and what our stock is like. Happy with Anderson on green, desperate for Archer ( forlorn hope ) not sure about Gus or any of the others. Wood in England is fine.
If I were Bash or Hartley I would practise practice practice batting as well as bowling. Not much opportunity for them on pitches prepared for Anderson.

Unfortunately that also gave the confidence needed to Shubman Gill who is not just an even better player but better equipped to score runs all over the World.

Just a Test too far, been a long series, had their chances early on but look a bit weary now (hardly surprising in India). We might have fared a bit better in a shorter series.
For the summer I would like to see Root back at three, Brook four, Stokes five and blood a a new Six. Give Bairstow back the gloves in England and the seven slot.
A bit of a break now will do them good.

I would rather England were competitive in 5 tests, and lose them all, than what has happened in this series. To lose a test in well under three days is terrible by any standards. The batting has looked threadbare far too often, and India have been able to accumulate far too many runs.
There is nothing like enough consistency, and I don't see that situation getting any better with the current team in charge.

I am not sure about Bairstow with the gloves. He had an awful summer from memory and our bowling not great atm. He is good at £ but I would rather see if the young guns given a chance. There seem to be a few of them vying.
Broom should help. 3 seems to be a problem now. Pope has what it takes. Maybe a home series against potentially weaker opposition might help cement him. We need to give a chance to someone at six.
I daresay wood, Woakes and Anderson will prevail this summer but againI want to see a young charger. I don’t know what we have.

time to move on from bairstow entirely i would say. don't think either he or foakes will make the starting line up for the next ashes. soft summer schedule an ideal opportunity to try one of the younger keepers like smith or rew

I like Brook. Stokes can bat and Root might be the best I have seen including KP. Openers look set. Pope needs more time but has what it takes. I am more concerned about the bowling which lacks World Class strike bowlers or match winning spinners
