I was never a big fan of Thorpe and was particularly bemused when he scored the winning run leaving Alex Tudor 99 not out but J will say this, he is an extremely brave and though guy. I saw him facing bowling that leaked at 94.5 mph out of the Blue zmountsjns in Jamaica in 2004. I have no doubt he has the stretto recover from this illness.
Ironically his partner at the other end was a gug I tried to get arrested for impersonating a Test Cricketer! He is another guy J now have enormous respect for.
So sad about Roy. We as cricket fans were cheated out of seeing his talent. He only played 26 Tests. He has prodigious talent. I don’t know if he had personal demons or was just too much of a maverick for a team manager. You only have to read the commend his contemporaries to know what sort of man he was.

Thorpe is my favourite ever England player - loved watching him bat, definitely a man for the big occasion and he played some superb knocks for England - agree about the Tudor incident tho, that was just bananas. Hope he recovers quickly

Really hope Thorpe recovers. A proper Test batsmen and England's best middle order batsman in his pomp. Batted with flair but would never give his wicket away… the current Eng test batsmen should go and study how Thorpe used to bat to understand how to succeed as a Test batsman.

You see his winning knock vs NZ in the TB test shown yesterday. Fabulous square cutter, on drive, cover drive… had all the shots as well as able to rein it in when needs must. So, yes, he had flair but could also grind it out. Definitely among England's best middle order batsmen in the last 25 years.

I saw him grinding it out at Sabina Park in 2004, Best and Edwards coming out of the Blue Mountains at 94mph! Tough guy too! That is also the first time I started to respect Nasser Hussein. I tried to get him arrested for impersonating a cricketer as I was a Ramprakash man. I really like Nasser now.

My brother & I went out for a beer in Perth during Ashes series in 98/99 & stumbled upon Naz & a few other England players drinking in same bar. Very approachable, genuine guy, & happy to chat to England fans. Excellent in the comm box & did a wonderful tribute to Warne during the memorial service in Oz - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQORhPzUUw8

He is well respected all over the World particularly young fans. I saw him interview a girl teen sensation in Bombay, Rodrigues I think. You could really see the respect she had for him. The ECB are missing a trick in not using him as an Ambassador for the game Worldwide.
