Although England are in all probability the only side that can win I think the shambles of the England second innings has marked something of a momentum shift. Only Root looked at all convincing and Ashwin bagged six cheap wickets which won't have harmed his confidence.
Assuming India come out with a comfortable draw I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's backs to the wall for England in the remainder of this series. |

It has a whiff of that as things stand. Long way to go yet though.
The selection of Lawrence over Ali now looks an error to me. Lawrence contribution = sq/rt of fk all here I’d have backed Ali to get more than 18 runs in the match even given his lack of a run in red ball and his bowling could have been the difference, particularly when Pant got after Leach, when Bess decided to chuck pies this morning and tomorrow when we need wickets. |

2.66 on England looks a little generous to me. It took England 96 overs to bowl India out 1st innings, this time they need 9 wickets in 90 overs on a day 5 pitch.
This market is very much in love with the draw. |

agree whizz - it's also not impossible for India to bat themselves in with a chance. A big partnership in the top order and only 3 r 4 down at tea will see their price come well in from 20.

I still can't understand what happened after tea, time is so important in this match. If England only take 1 wicket in the first session the pressure will really be on and Root could end up with Ice cream all over his face.

After today's disgraceful after tea England performance I really do hope that India save the match. I was staring at the screen in disbelief at the defensive batting and as for our bowlers/fielders the impression given was 'what's the hurry'.Root for all his batting skills is no Brearley or Vaughan.

you don't win big test matches by being timid & not grasping opportunities ... this was a great chance for england to bat about 10 overs after lunch and then bowl ... they could have set the standard for the series but its a real missed opportunity
they may still win because the indians are batting on a 5th day test pitch with plenty of wear but there is no plausible excuse for england & their attitude when batting after lunch if england fail to win the match they will be on the back foot for the remainder of the tour ... they will actually deserve to fail because of their fear at a time when balls of steel were needed |

Tomorrow morning will be worse. Rolled and flat. Things might change quickly after lunch though. It looks set to be a nail biter imho. Nerves of steel required. Giving away overs was plain stupid and arrogant imho. Not saying England won’t win but but England have out their faith in the ball and not the pitch. I think Indian batsmen play the turning ball quite well. It is true the harder ball did fir Rohit but dumb is always dumb

I've eventually come up with a plausible reason for Root's seeming madness in not declaring about 45 mins before innings ended. He has deliberately got his team to score as many runs as possible, so he can't possibly be blamed for an over-generous declaration in the (incredibly unlikely, but remotely possible) event India win. Unfeasible as it is, it is at least a reason. There is no other explanation on this planet that my little brain can even conceive.

There is a theory that if you cant bowl someone out in 80-90 overs on the 5th day you will not be able to bowl them out in 120. My view is your spin bowlers are not very good you need all the help you can from the pitch. There will be unplayable deliveries but they do not always take wickets so you need as many of them as you can get. The middle of the pitch still looks pretty good. The puffs of dust are generally coming from the rough. I could really do with a couple of quick wickets tomorrow then back the draw heavily to clear red and go green on the draw. We saw how Ashwin and Washington DC batted when the ball was soft. Fact is this should have been a draw but India batted badly first dig and gave their wickets away / unlucky. |

ive been getting up 3.30 most days for the last week, following windies , pak , this match without any commentary or pictures , just on this forum and 365 , and for **** sake , i honestly didnt have a clue until around midday today that c4 was covering this test,

not sure why root would be worried about losing. realistically a draw and a loss are the same vis a vis england's chances of getting a positive result out of the series. pretty much non existent if they can't win this one from such a dominant position and psychological blow too
