Glad I did not bet on this. Was going to lum0 on England initially but got scared by weather and the toss. A little shocked by SL batting. Nearly had a little bet on SL at 14 because the pitch will break but see how the odds are coming down. Shall stay out and just enjoy the show.
Good to see YJB bat in such an intelligent way rather than playing “ his “ way. This is Test Cricket and maybe he is just starting to realise it. He has the ability but his technique has to improve.

Listening to radio; Ebony rainsford brent has never heard of Sidney Barnes. Totally clueless, then asked 'what era are we talking about?' as if players of the distant past are of no interest or significance. Interesting.

The great Sydney Barnes mentioned on Test Match Special!
Do you still think Alastair Cook is England’s greatest batsman? He doesn’t even make my Englands greatest 3rd XL!

England are still struggling to find a consistent opening partnership (unless you think an opening stand of less than 20 is consistent), Root was very unlucky, but fortunately Bairstow and Lawrence seem very capable of playing spin and got the job done.

I think England are shaping up nicely. We are short a World Class spinner but Leach is decent. Bess is young and got a lot to learn.
The middle order is excellent.
I think Crawly will be one of the openers, he just needs more experience but will be good in Aus. I have no problem with Burns or Sibley. Both have faults but show determination beyond their ability. I know nothing about county cricket but would hope someone new develops. Such a shame about the lad from Lancashire.
Pope and this new lad are the future and England have a problem fitting in middle order batsmen. If I was Curran I would ask Surrey if I could bat at 3 and try and make some big scores. He oozes talent but will never be a frontline bowler and always an understudy for Stokes.
