When the game started, anything other then backing NZ was low risk. That was the time to bet. Now each result has a pretty high price and risk. Probably Bangla lay a safe bet but you'll have to stake a good chunk for that(not good for your health).

Totally agree. Like I said earlier, I would not mind facing Southee with the new ball on this pitch. He is bowling low 130's so not express and nothing in the pitch to worry. To get out to Wagner knowing that he is going to try and bounce you out is just criminal.

When Bang performed reasonably well this time, like a typical Test team, NZ were perceived to still have the home advantage so traded as high as 1.75ish like a favourite with a modest edge. If Bangla had lost a few wickets in a flurry then steadied the ship, as is more typical of them, we would probably have seen NZ trade at 1.08 or so and level off. If you back at 1.16 expecting Bang to get off to a bad start then you make twice as much as if you wait for a bad start to be confirmed, but if they start off well you have a really uncomfortable time of it. If you take the chance of Bang getting off to a "normal" Test team start then the odds climb rapidly. In this case the amount of extra win potential in each scenario was in the ratio (1.75-1.16)/1.16-1.08) or 7.5/1 give or take a point, so say somewhere between 6-1 and 9-1. The extra amount you make on NZ (if they win) by not backing NZ from the outset is several times the extra you make when you back at 1.16 ahead of a bad start instead of backing them at 1.08 after the bad start is confirmed. I hope that makes sense. In summary I think you have a better time and more potential to win if you avoid backing the 1.16 from the outset. |
