Test match cricket at a reasonable  time for some,  with sounds and babes and sunshine..

A hint of rain?

The return of one Darren Bravo and a poor record for England here probably cancel each other out.

Prices dictate a lay of tourists first up none the less.

I’ve done okay. Had a very good day 1 and start to day 2 then lost a lot of my green chasing the draw with England collapsing but stopped, which at the time looked sensible but would eventually have worked exceptionally well. Had a lot of lays of England when WI second innings fell apart, which turned out well and have done some minor work since. Have:

WI £2.2k green
Eng £11k green
Draw £6.3k red

I usually get comedy draw green in games where it goes to the moon but I didn’t this time, because I thought there was such little value and it felt like a game where there was every chance the draw just kept going out.

I got a bit fed up with throwing good money after bad, to be honest. You expect this kind of thing in NZ but not elsewhere, although occasional Caribbean wickets do die so...

Well it’s worked very well in NZ. Depends on the context but you very often get draw odds bouncing back down very quickly after a wicket and one decent partnership can justify the last few backs, let alone the one after the last wicket. Problems are judging where to set your lays and that a running collapse ruins you.

Report Charlie January 26, 2019 3:22 PM GMT
The bounce down is going on now. I did consider backing it at around 8.x but thought that another quick wicket when I'd backed England would screw it.

Bit harsh. They were pretty awful, from selection on (Rashid, FFS, ahead of Broad) and the batting was shocking at times (although WI get a lot of credit for the bowling in the first innings especially. Still though, it’s one test and it’s not uncommon to get shellacked one game and win the next.

We’ve largely retired Broad already, for some reason including on a pitch that would have suited him, to allow us to play a floaty left armer (okay, I like Curran but really, not that much) and a leggie who’s not even reliably any good on rank turners. Chris Woakes, dodgy away record though he has, has every right to be well miffed too. He’s a bloody good batsman too, as well as a fine bowler.

Report Fatslogger January 27, 2019 12:56 AM GMT
I didn’t watch the first innings (blink and you miss it) and mostly only saw bits today where England were batting well (I caught a bit of Root looking like a kid playing in an adult league against Gabriel bowling short), but I think we were a lot worse in the second than the first innings. Sometimes an attack will click and blow you away (this isn’t making excuses or saying they were good, because they aren’t good) but giving your wickets away to a decent part timer is a lot worse than being destroyed by some really good fast bowling on what was then a helpful pitch.

Puts my £15k loss a couple of Mondays back and £10k today in context. I’ve not properly broken it down but I know that I’ve had an unusually bad run in tests, losing £15k total in the three SA Pak debacles (£8k of the 15 was that flat deck third test both sides collapsed on and the market knew it would happen, then they both scored heavily second innings just to rub it in once draw had died).  I’ve actually been really good in T20s in that time. My football betting is usually good for a fairly steady stream of small to moderate wins and the occasional big to massive loss, as hit me both on the Monday in question and twice today. Was looking like I’d rebuilt quite nicely until today too. It happens.

Have you got longer term break downs? We know you’re good at tests but it could be you’re actually good at limited overs too, just overstaking recently coinciding with an unlucky run. Happened to me during my one real horror run in my career. Like you it was get a grand plus on a position, watch it fall apart within the next 3 minutes, for market after market. I was good enough to come back, so you definitely are. I did cut my limited over stakes back, just in time to start winning.

It’s just modern test batting, where they feel the need to play low percentage attacking shots in a context where they should be primarily defensive. As I’d gone red on the draw that was good for me, although it’s obvious shafted me at other times.

had the fortune/misfortune to be one of the many 1000s of english people in bridgetown last week. got back this morning

had to a double take when i saw the name of rashid on the scoreboard. all the talk leading up to the game was a straight choice between broad and leach for the last spot and then suddenly rashid appears for way out left field. even they were having doubts about the selection the chairman of the WICB should have made up their mind. telegraphed it would help the taller bowlers by saying they were tired of the turgid pitches in the west indies in recent years and he wanted pitches with pace and bounce. basically saying broad's finished if he now england's 4th best seamer

it was obvious from very early on it was an horrific error to leave out broad. we were left with a seam attack of anderson and then   a 3rd and 4th seamer. when the idea of curran opening the bowling was first raised can't believe it wasn't laughed of court straight away. he's a batman who bowls a bit at the moment. 80 mph swingers might get you a few wickets in england but he's nowhere near up to taking the new ball in an away test match. we were at least 1 front line bowler short and maybe even 2. you can't keep picking rashid to bowl 10 overs in the 4th inns in the hope he might bowl the odd magic ball and do very little else in the rest of the game. if they really thought it was 2 spinner pitch then leach had to play anyway. both moeen and rashid offer up too many bad balls. captain has no control and it led to jimmy and stokes being overbowled. root has to take a lot of the blame. got the selection spot on in sri lanka but hopelessly wrong her

if broad had played west indies may not have sniffed 200 1st inns and it would have probably have been a different. as it turned the recent trend of the team batting first getting any sort of reasonable score on the board bossing the game. 300 first up these days wins the vast majority of games. teams batting 2nd seem to have very little stomach to fight back

odd to see quite so few bajans in the crowd. apart from a few group of schoolkids must have been 98% england fans. even on day 3 when it was obvious west indies were gonna win they didn't exactly come rushing in then either
Report currant bun January 29, 2019 8:09 AM GMT

Good stuff mafe. Still hope you enjoyed your trip. Agree with your comments. Embarrassing from Bayliss and Root. Bayliss and Ramps stealing a living imo. Zero accountability.

It was touched upon in commentary that Bajans paid less than English fans. I guess 4 day tickets are sold to the English pre trip?

I hope the Windies had the grace to appreciate the wonderful English ovation of Dowrich and Holder's milestones. What other nation travels like we do and do that?? Even the local Injuns in Blighty wouldn't applaud a Root ton at Brum or wherever.
Report mafeking January 29, 2019 12:39 PM GMT
certainly worst places to be than barbados even if your team is getting a thorough humping Cool

WICB outsourced the tickets to an agency. paid US$140 for the 5 days

hard to decide which of days 2, 3 and 4 were most humiliating for england. suppose day 3 takes some beating watching a number 8 batsman treating england's attack with utter contempt in taking an easy double hundred off them. what a bizarre day's cricket that was going from 18 wickets to none. sublime to ridiculous
Report detraveller January 29, 2019 11:45 PM GMT

Not sure about cricket in Windies but it is very common for other countries to charge foreigners more for things than locals. In India it can be 5 or 10 times as much. We are just looking at a ferry from Minorca to Majorca and the price is less for locals there as well. So much for the EU.
