I've given up on serious betting re football. Sometimes have a cheeky bet on 0-0 or a late late goals at 25/1. Treat it like a little piggy bank. When it comes in it gives my bank a nice boost

First sport I started on was Tennis, made a nice profit just laying whoever was serving in the WTA and then greening up when they got broke.
