Some but England playing well one test, poorly the next is not remotely a new phenomenon. I think part of it is just that we've been pretty evenly matched with a lot of our recent opponents (India and Pakistan away obvious exceptions) so we've had a lot of close series.

Did it last test. I don't think Jennings is that bad and he certainly has to be stuck with, given alternatives. Ballance and Dawson need to be jettisoned though and quickly. Woakes may be back next game, probably for Wood then you bring two batsmen in for the others. Trott and Pietersen tended to do well against SA, right?

Will be interesting to find out how many times the bottom 5 have outscored the top 5. Must be quite often.

Report geordie1956 July 17, 2017 3:17 PM BST
England 2.08 to win the series...a definite lay to me...far too many problems concerning the batting & unless Root or Cook get a big score the rest fall down almost immediately..both number 2 & 3 are real weak links & England as likely to collapse as produce a big score - Australia (assuming they play a proper team) will easily beat us in the Ashes as pace will be order of the day on their wickets and we look so susceptible to any half decent bowling
Report johnnyrant July 17, 2017 3:49 PM BST
Top order abysmal outside of Cook and Root which looked a glaring weakness before the 1st test at Lord's. What I don't get is the number of chances afforded to Ballance who has consistently been exposed at test level. Meanwhile, Ian Bell has seemingly been thrown on the scrap heap when he is a proven test class batsmen. Other test nations like Australia/India cherish test class batsmen and allow them play on until their late 30s. Eng seem to be keen to off-load their best batsmen past 30.

Why bring in another spinner, particularly a kid? Vince is hardly any more than another flawed sacrificial lamb to good pace bowling either. Two batsmen for Ballance and Dawson. Not sure who without paying more attention to Lions and CC but Westley has to have a shout, especially as I think he scored runs against SA for the Lions.

Report wondersobright July 17, 2017 4:24 PM BST
hameed fc scores since may

17, 23, 0, 2, 18, 38*, 9, 10, 0

I like him but its asking a lot to throw him back in isn't it (no cricket for 3 weeks either) Sad
Report Fatslogger July 17, 2017 5:07 PM BST
I wouldn't touch Hameed with a barge pole right now. I'm not a great believer in the phenomenon of form, which is often just random variation but Hameed now has a pretty indifferent overall record and putting him back in because of one or two decent test innings months ago would be a vast leap of faith and unfair to him too, I think. I'd rather give Hales another go and I don't think he's a particularly good selection either. Westley would probably be my choice.

Complete lack of pride exhibited today, not one of them wanted to come out and bat properly.

That doesn't detract from SA's first class performance, or the fact that England are carrying 3-5 players every test.

Hopefully that's the end of 'well, he can bat a bit' Dawson, and Gary Ballance.
