The top edge of that LOW has been sitting just south of Whangarei for hours on end now. Don't see it moving south of Hamilton anytime soon

People complaining about the forecast should consider that it's a bit like a really complex DRS - think of those marginal calls - the "50% of ball width" represents the uncertainty that the umpires call is correct but when it's a close call the graphic doesn't really "confirm" that the ball was hitting or missing, just that the computation error is more/less than 50% in favour of one outcome over the other, so you go with the one with the slightly higher probability of being correct - the more uncertainty there is the closer it is to the middle of the "ball" graphic (which would be better illustrated as as a cone of probable ball-paths instead).

The percentages are often given in forecasts but what they don't do is say "It's only 20% likely to rain, but if it DOES rain at all there's a 60% chance of it being torrential for twenty minutes or a 40% chance of it raining heavily for an hour or more".

Not complaining at all VV. Just putting it out there that the Met may be tampering with the forecasts, or least delaying the updates until after they've placed their bets. Like Tyco said, LOW pressure systems are difficult to predict, they are in Australia too, but I don't think they are getting the forecasts too far wrong, they are just witholding info until they've made their dollars.

We are not talking about the uncertainty in the forecast. Nor is my main point to prove that they are crooks(though im guilty of joking about it a lot). All I am saying is, the two events, namely the rain that showed up on the radar abnd then disappeared and the NZ lays last night, were strange occurances. Both were mentioned on this forum when they occurred. And we wondered what was happening. That's all.

In fact, the met guy said this himself. "We know its gonna rain and rain a lot. We just don't know where exactly and when exactly"

I agree, the forecast 16 hours ago was 2mm of rain late afternoon, 30mm more than an inch or rain has fallen already, plus more to come, surely you can not get it that wrong ??

First session can safely be ruled out. 6mm rain forecast in last session. All they've got is the middle session imo and that only if the drizzles stop, which they probably wont.

and the out field , which is uncovered, has had 10 hours of rain on it.

By:
detraveller

which is why im ruling out the first session.

As ive said before, the deciding factor is the rain that falls during playing hours. Because that is what is needed to cause further delays(and is forecast)
