Another venue where we have a first Test.

Given we were expecting a bunsen for the 1st Test and got a road, I have no idea how to pre-match trade this, and unusually for me, leave it alone.

Not that I think England will get these runs but it's not that simple: the openers are both slow scoring but may play a few more shots tomorrow if it looks feasible. More importantly, from Root at 3 down, the batsmen are naturally quick scorers.

I'm struggling to make a case for the draw price being so low. Runs and wickets will come.

It's pretty clear how well Broad and Anderson have bowled to help England into this situatio though. 29 overs 5-66 between them.

the models are wrong for 4th innings run chases. it's usually purely resource based, when the psychological factors are huge.

anyhoo, india are big at 1.3, but there are a couple of positives for england. Given rashenius long bowls and using him against the tail is the right approach, and hameed looks the part.

Report DStyle November 20, 2016 9:10 AM GMT
not sure trader, i suspect there may be something in it for the trade, but not for the result.

once england decide that they're playing for the draw, kohli can put six men around the bat and bowl the spinners in tandem and the inevitable will happen.
Report Fatslogger November 20, 2016 9:16 AM GMT
Couldn't resist going slightly red on the draw with a lay at 6 and a few moments later it was at 5! Glad I got my England lay in at 10s for now but devastated that I didn't hold more draw for longer.

One factor to bear in mind is that if England doesn't look terribly likely to win, India can bowl more than the prescribed number of overs, especially with Jadeja on and lots of dot balls, as he can then get through an over in under 3m. I actually think England's chances of getting out with a draw are improved significantly by having at least some shot at the win, as per DStyle's point above.
Report Fatslogger November 20, 2016 9:23 AM GMT
If Cook and Hameed hang around for ever then it may well be drawn but even then, if they manage to accumulate a few runs, leaving England say 200/1 at lunch tomorrow, it's still far from impossible that the quicker scoring players could get England there, although obviously the Indian win would remain more likely and the moment wickets started to fall, any thought of a win would recede.

Kohli also seems to be playing for the draw. Surely you put fielders in.

Im wondering the same. I think India win during the middle session. The situation demands a SA type resistance and if i remember correctly, they set out to face 150 odd overs and were 5 down till tea on last day. And then it was over quickly.

Report geordie1956 November 20, 2016 11:25 AM GMT
Realistically England will struggle to get to mid afternoon tomorrow - Duckett won't survive for more than a few over (if that) so already 3 down  - perhaps should they attack & just might perhaps get 100 runs in the morning session losing only a couple of wickets - you then have a situation of 200 runs required with the possibility of 2 out of 3  Root, Bairstow & Stokes batting who all could score a few in the afternoon (when the pitch seems slightly more benign) - this puts added pressure on the Indian team who will need to change their strategy

I would prefer attack to attempting to defend 90+ overs because with the 2 openers both out I cannot see them defending all day - they are likely to lose either way but at least by attacking it sends a message to the opposition for the remainder of the series
Report Cardinal Scott November 20, 2016 11:30 AM GMT

Yes, that's actually what the rules say too.

Routine win for India today. Got out of gaol this test for a small profit that would have been a huge one if I'd trusted Cook and Hameed more.

Report Whisperingdeath November 21, 2016 7:44 AM GMT
Much as to be expected here. I took a small loss from an initial bet.

With regard to the game the team were not helped by the Selectors yet again. Dropping Stokes was as stupid as playing Duckett. Losing the toss consigned their fate.

The selectors have not thought about left and right hander combinations. You could see how important it was at times and made it difficult for the India bowlers with their lines.

India showed they were the better team in these conditions and Kohli was the difference between the two sides.

England " lost " the game when Hameed was run out or rather they lost any chance from that point on and the subsequent calypso collapso. That is why Duckett must go.

There is not a lot of difference between these two sides. Pujara got a century first go. Take that away and only Ashwin got a fifty and as I said the difference netween the sides was Kohli and his 248 runs. India won by 246...say no more a nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat!

Next Test should see Butler in at 7 maybe. I would put Jonny Barstad up to 4 or Stokes if you want a left hander. The Johhny at 5, Moen then Butler. I think that would give the top order the stability it needs and Ali and Butler could come in and play with freedom.

Much as I wanted Ansari to do well he adds very little at this stage. A SLA was needed but it is not him right now. There is no point in playing Batty either.

I don't know what Mohali will be like but I suspect there will not be much grass on a pitch that could be said to favour England. Let's hope we get a bloody minded curator!

i have a question for all you money making studs on here..was it simply a question of winning the toss?
had England won the toss would they have posted a total adjacent to that of India's and more pertinently would their bowlers have been able to dismiss India twice?
i'm not totally convinced albeit we did bowl well in the latter part of India's 2nd inns
having said that they were more looking to increase their lead rather than playing more conservatively to preserve wickets.
Report pxb November 21, 2016 10:41 AM GMT
jtb, I've asked myself the same question. Had England won the toss, they would have had an early advantage but probably not as decisive as India's was. Be interesting if they win the toss in one of the remaining Tests.
Report Whisperingdeath November 21, 2016 10:51 AM GMT

but they did themselves no favours dropping Woakes and playing Duckett. India are the better side in familiar conditions but England are not far behins and winning the toss brings the two sides closer.

Report Fatslogger November 21, 2016 12:12 PM GMT
Buttler probably is a better choice than Duckett by now but England having toured with only Ballance as a specialist batting alternative to an obviously dodgy number 4 is madness. Buttler is a serious limited overs talent but a relative liability in FC and test cricket.

I think these sides are pretty evenly matched if England wins the toss, clearly not so if India does.
Report Injera November 21, 2016 2:07 PM GMT
Selection mistakes have been apparent for a while.

Bringing Ballance back in during the Summer made little sense. With 7 tests coming up in Asia we had to blood a player who is light on their feet, sweeps, reverse sweeps and rotates the strike with ease.

James Taylor is a huge loss in that regard...

So who was it to be? Vince, Buttler, Billings or Borthwick? Vince didn't take his chances. I know little of Borth apart from his stats. It had to be one of the other 2 imo.

Instead they chose Ballance plus Duckers instead of Hameed. They then dropped Duckers to 4. It took 7 innings before the brains trust moved him from outside leg stump to a middle and off stump guard....

I assume they wanted 3 spinners cos of the heat. The quicks can't bowl 20 in a day so they went for Ansari instead of any of the other quicks who would have outbowled him. Personally I would have gone with 4 quicks and bowled them into the ground if necessary but I'm a hard bastard..

The surprise that Rasher is now bowling well amuses me. Funny what a run in the side gives you!! They could have got 10+ tests into this lad but bottled it every time. In the Windies, at OT, the Oval etc.

Never mind, well played India. 3 to go. Great series already. Happy
