Got very excited about how this isn't going to be a draw and after a bit of playing around trading the draw I just got huge lays in at 5 then 4.2. Pretty sure it won't be drawn but upset I didn't trade out when the draw was at 15 or whatever it was.

'38 overs left in the day, but we can't get them all' - What do cricinfo mean by this exactly?
By:
prob overs lost like last night...dont know why.
By:
Will be 2 1/2 hours of play left so probably won't quite get 38 overs in unless Pakistan look like winning and bowl them quickly. So I suppose it could be a draw but really needs wickets to fall or they'll just get the runs and if wickets fall the tail will probably go for hit out or get out anyway, as better placed to avoid defeat by getting the runs than blocking out.

They play for 2.5 hrs in the last session(thats what theyve been playing every day).
Yesterday they got 32 overs in, plus change of innings. I know when the last hour starts, there are a minimum of 15 overs that have to be bowled. Pakistan could well slow down their over rate till that point, but that will be a shame as they should be pressing for victory. |
By:
I think all depends on this partnership. They wont go for the runs when bishoo comes in. Blocking out looks much more easier than scoring. So once Pak get a wicket it will be Pak v draw for sure.

No one? I thought they had to play 90 overs on the last day?
By:
Sorry, hadn't updated. Thanks

The term last hour can be a misnomer. One hour before the scheduled end of the game, the last hour starts. An agreed minimum number of overs (usually 15 in Test match cricket and 20 in other first-class cricket games) is bowled. The last hour therefore lasts either for the longer of 60 minutes, or the time it takes to bowl the agreed minimum number of overs. This rule is there to prevent time wasting by a team that looks likely to lose a game.
By:
Thing is, probably only in Pakistan's interests to bowl the overs slowly if no wickets fall, in which case think WI probably win anyway. Could be a draw but requires very specific things to happen or not happen.
By:
From what I understand, one hour into the session, the last hour starts. And then there are only 15 more overs left in the game. Hence we may only get 27-30 overs in the session and the extra half hour wont help with regards to getting more overs in.

By:
Very true FS, but the same could also be said at the start of the day, and they've not done too badly so far.
By:
Imagine scoring 300 for your team and losing the game. Will probably be a first if WI win.

By:
I always thought the full 90 overs were bowled on the last day

Took a while ayt but draw now favoured over win

Extra Detail: Last Hour of Play
On the last day of play, a minimum of 75 overs must be bowled before the last hour of play begins. If the time one hour before the scheduled end of play arrives without 75 overs having been bowled, the last hour of play does not begin until after 75 overs have been completed. Once the last hour of play begins, a further 15 overs must be bowled. Play actually ends either: one hour after the last hour begins, or after 15 overs have been bowled from the time the last hour began, whichever comes later. |
By:
the full 90 overs will be bowled.

Extra Detail: Extended Play and Early Finish
If the batting side is 9 wickets down at the scheduled tea break, play continues for an extra half hour, or until the 10th wicket falls, whichever occurs sooner. Tea is then taken. If either captain thinks that the game could be completed on the fourth or earlier day, within half an hour's additional play beyond the scheduled end of play, requests the additional time, and the umpires agree, play may continue for an additional half hour on that day. If both captains agree that neither side can win, within half an hour of the scheduled end of play on the last day, the game may end at any time within that half hour, with the match drawn. |
