Bob - best tip I ever got about getting an MOT is to take it to a Council place (where they do their own fleet of vehicles). You'll pay full whack for the MOT itself but they're a lot fairer on things that a commercial garage would have a vested interest in failing you on. My 16-year old heap got through even with CV joints clicking on turns. All I had to do was replace a few boots and bulbs before the free re-test.
