A 7 match series, so not yet a dead rubber (which I had assumed).

Pallekelle conditions may suit England's seamers a bit better than down on the coast, but Eng have never played an ODI here before.

Might have a dabble on Eng, despite Cook playing.
Report DStyle December 10, 2014 8:58 AM GMT
big congratulations to the selectors for playing stokes on a two paced turner and not having tredwell in the side, and then dropping stokes and selecting tredwell on a wicket that seams.

beyond facking belief.
Report Captain Wurzel December 10, 2014 9:30 AM GMT
Yeah - playing Stokes instead of Tredwell in Colombo was nuts. However dropping Stokes

now has got to be the right decision - seriously out of form with both ball and bat.

40 overs of spin to come from Sri Lanka, 239 on this pitch, will in all probability be 30-40 too many for England.
Report DStyle December 10, 2014 12:54 PM GMT
that blue lighting is making prior look like a junkie.

vital that england go hard early here and get in front of the rate, because it's game over if we can squeezed out of game after the first powerplay along with the possibility of rain.

I'm a little in the dark regarding the reserve day. Can someone in the know explain pls. Will the bet be void (billyhills) or will the bet run over to tomorrows new game
Report hologon December 10, 2014 2:03 PM GMT
My understanding is play will carry on tomorrow ie  England will chase same target
Report hologon December 10, 2014 2:07 PM GMT
So the bet will run on as well
Report DStyle December 10, 2014 2:09 PM GMT
i think they start from scratch tomorrow don't they?

match odds market gets voided, and cmm runs through to tomorrow.

might be wrong though.
Report mafeking December 10, 2014 2:23 PM GMT
pretty sure they'll complete whatever's left of today's game. a full 50 overs for england if no more play today or if they do restart today and come off again they'll finish that target

think you're right mafeking.

england will have to chase this down in 50 overs tomorrow. (weather & D/L dependent)

Correct except that if they start before 16.00 UK time it's a 20 over match. If they cant start England get the 50 overs tomorrow

Report hologon December 10, 2014 5:24 PM GMT
So they will just need 20 overs for completed match?
Report hologon December 10, 2014 5:25 PM GMT
tomorrow
Report cricketnut2 December 10, 2014 8:39 PM GMT
If its a full 50 over match, I just can't see England winning, as England are not very good, playing spin bowling and Sri Lanka have 40 overs of spin available to them, plus a slow wicket, will also not help England.
Report mafeking December 10, 2014 9:41 PM GMT
apparently highest chase ever required in pallekelle. on that basis will have to play well above themselves to win this one. hales and taylor will have to get england well above the rate at the start before the constant diet of spin no doubt ties us up in knots
Report cricketnut2 December 10, 2014 9:44 PM GMT
Hales, is not playing.
Report mafeking December 10, 2014 9:47 PM GMT
meant ali of course
Report cricketnut2 December 10, 2014 10:34 PM GMT
Unfortunatly Cook, will open, hence we have little chance of getting above the run rate, let alone well above.
Report Blake84 December 11, 2014 5:21 AM GMT
England really should chase this down shouldn't they. The pitch is not a dust bowl. Just need two players to get a quick 20 or 30 each and the rest can just push the ball around.
Report ph. December 11, 2014 7:56 AM GMT
just 30, this is England! Run rate strategy of 4 for the first 20 overs n'est ce pas (circa 1990) still order of the day I'm afraid. Everyone else hits over the circle first power play. Cook will want to soften up the new ball with some serious forward defensives.

When have you seen a scorecard, with all the batsmen scoring between 20-30. Now my guess is, one may get 50 a couple will get 30, One will get 20 and there will be 5-6 scores of single figures.

Report Blake84 December 11, 2014 8:28 AM GMT
What I'm saying is if two players get a QUICK 20 or 30 the required rate for the rest will be just 4 an over or something.
Report dustybin December 11, 2014 8:52 AM GMT
Why is a 'One Day International' being played over two days?
I can't recall having ever seen this happen.
If this is allowed to happen then why do they always abandon and/or have draws?
Report Blake84 December 11, 2014 9:18 AM GMT
I can't recall it happening before. Seems weird for a pointless 7 match series.

Report DStyle December 11, 2014 10:18 AM GMT
this series is really only about preparation for the world cup and has had to be played during a monsoon season.

that's the most likely explanation for the reserve days.
Report DStyle December 11, 2014 10:20 AM GMT
taylor's ease against the spin is quickly becoming an almighty embarrassment for the selectors.
Report cricketnut2 December 11, 2014 10:37 AM GMT
His running between the wickets is very positive, as well
Report Only-the-Brave December 11, 2014 10:49 AM GMT
pitch far easier to bat on than yesterday.  Hard to be too enthusiastic about a 240 chase these days.  Think we're watching 2 pretty poor ODI sides here.

Taylor holes out as I type.  Decent knock all the same.
Report happyhamma December 11, 2014 10:54 AM GMT
Hi guys, can any of you tell me what happens if this game is a tie? Super over? least lost wickets wins? Sorry if it's a stupid question.
Report Blake84 December 11, 2014 11:03 AM GMT
I thought they should do this easy but didn't think they would.
Report cricketnut2 December 11, 2014 11:09 AM GMT
Rain seems to have helped the wicket quicken up and has helped England
Report hologon December 11, 2014 11:11 AM GMT
Happy if it is a tie that is the result
Report cricketnut2 December 11, 2014 11:14 AM GMT
use it sensibly and not try and smack the ball everywhere, 30-0/1 would be ideal of these 5 overs.
Report Only-the-Brave December 11, 2014 11:16 AM GMT
be some effort to somehow manage to lose from here - just need to bat smart.

With it being such a low total, it has enabled England to play to the approach that suits them.  The problem comes when teams score 300 - England have no answers.
Report cricketnut2 December 11, 2014 11:28 AM GMT
spot on there Only, even now though, you are 1/2 expecting an England collapse

Perfect example here.  How has the game even got to a stage where they need 15 off 14?  Will still probably win but the top sides would have finished this 5+ overs ago if only 3 down.
