This is where Cook (normally) falls down, a pro-active captain would now bring in closer fielders and look for more wickets.

The series, has already shown, that these 2 sides are evenly matched in English conditions and I expect this one, to go right down to the wire, as well.
Report Darlodog June 3, 2014 7:28 PM BST
England to win from here, I think.
Bopara to come, they won't score many from him.
Report cardshark June 3, 2014 7:28 PM BST
I would get Root to bowl a few now - pitch it up, close field and try to sneek a few quick one's in
Report Darlodog June 3, 2014 7:32 PM BST
I expect Root to bowl 5+ too. Agree; get him on now.

there's no way they gonna lose?

Report joe39 June 3, 2014 9:08 PM BST
England have smuggled their 10 overs of Root and Bopara (0-44), but they need another one, because Jordan has gone 3-0-20-0, he can only bowl 9 maximum.
Report peter64 June 3, 2014 9:08 PM BST

Report cricketnut2 June 3, 2014 9:40 PM BST
you are right joe. England have to bowl an over of Root or Bopara
Report joe39 June 3, 2014 9:42 PM BST
Gurney's made at least 4 mistakes at 3rd man with catch attempts this series.
Report cricketnut2 June 3, 2014 9:44 PM BST
Cook has properly messed up here, as it is obvious, he only wanted 10 overs, out of Root and Bopara. Jordan had to bowl the 38th over onwards, but didn't come on to the 39th over.
Report joe39 June 3, 2014 9:48 PM BST
Might not need a 50th over at this rate Sad
Report joe39 June 3, 2014 9:49 PM BST
Sky reading Betfair forum, they've been told now Laugh
Report cricketnut2 June 3, 2014 9:51 PM BST
It was obvious from the 39th over, but the last over won't be needed, however I think the SL batsmen had also worked this out
Report Smith1 June 3, 2014 9:52 PM BST

Report joe39 June 3, 2014 9:57 PM BST
Double wicket maiden coming from Ravi, just as Cook planned.
Report paddletoe June 3, 2014 10:45 PM BST
Why was Cook so upset after the match. If anyone should have been upset it was Angelo Mathews. He had shown generosity in giving Butler several warnings by all accounts over two matches and the England player abused that generosity. Remember thinking during the previous match how many 2's Butler and Bopara ran when two runs never looked on. Now you can see why they could turn so many singles into 2's.
Report salmon spray June 3, 2014 10:49 PM BST
I am sure years ago that the etiquette was one warning and if you did it again you were fair game. I think there was a controversy decades ago when an English bowler ( Tony Lock ? ) ran out someone without warning.
Tbh I think I would do the same. It's surely the batsman who is cheating in the first place.
Report DStyle June 3, 2014 11:17 PM BST
i imagine that there would have been plenty of chat during the innings as well as the incident itself.

cook should perhaps be more worried about his keeping Hales out of the side.
Report Helissio June 4, 2014 12:30 AM BST
At least we cant accuse Matthews of match fixing! :-)
Report mafeking June 4, 2014 2:18 PM BST
remember when sri lanka were on the wrong end of a situation like this.  test match in new zealand a few years ago when murali left his ground to congratulate the other batsman on reaching 100 and the keeper took the bails off. they rightly weren't too happy about it

the sky pundits being holier than thou and saying sri lanka did nothing wrong crack me up. botham probably would have started a punch up there and then if a bowler had done that to him and say buttler had been not been backing up and then caught short on a quick single they'd all be queueing up to lay into him
Report jackdaw June 4, 2014 2:38 PM BST
I'm a cricket umpire and it never ceases to amaze me (well it doesn't anymore) of just how ignorant of the laws cricketers are, and that includes professionals. Instead of moaning the best thing Cook could do is to give his team a copy each of John Smith's. Not only does it state the laws it gives the reasoning behind them and creates scenarios. The thing about cricket is that the laws are completely logical and unlike football referees umpires are there to apply them and not interpret them.
Report Whisperingdeath June 4, 2014 2:43 PM BST
I remember when someone took a pot shot at the stumps, when someone.... the captain can't remember his name, oh yes Inzamam al Fat was batting.  Discretion being the better part of valour the fat aloo jumped out of the way, the ball hit his stumps England appealed and he was given run out.  It was disgusting.  I think vaughan may have been the England Captain and then when Bell was quite rightly run out for being a dozy twaitte it was Rahul Dravid and the Indians who had to play the White Man.  I think the England hippocracy over this matter is lamentable.  I do however feel Matthews could have given Butler the double teapot waited several seconds to make the point publicly and then withdrawn the appeal.
Report mafeking June 4, 2014 3:07 PM BST
whispering, i think that was more an umpiring error. he shouldn't have been given out by the 3rd umpirw as he wasn't attempting a run although as you rightly say vaughan should have withdrawn the appeal. he never left his ground

in a similar vein you shouldn't be out when diving in for a run and your bat bounces up off the ground. you've made your ground. never would have been before tv replays
Report cdog June 4, 2014 5:14 PM BST
It was of course Strauss who was captain during the Bell incident, Vaughan was long since retired.
