Surprisingly, it has been 16 Tests and 16 years since a draw here, and that match was low scoring, so presumably heavily rain affected.

To early to get a reliable weather forecast, but I'm laying the draw on the principle there will be more changes to the England team lineup than there will be to the weather forecast.

Can't see Aus easing up, with a 5-0 whitewash in sight.

Predictions for Eng team changes?

How long was it that England were the number one ranked Test team in the world? Was it last summer? Now, we're on the verge of losing 5-0 to an average - at best - team, and getting utterly thumped at that. So far, it's 381 runs, 218 runs, 150 runs, and about to be something like nine wickets.

that's been the case since half way through the second test. after the shock and denial had warn off, most of them have looked like they'd be secretly pleased to pull a muscle and get home early.

think that's a bit unfair. aus's batting's no great shakes, but two of their bowlers have been really excellent, and haddin's been impressive too.

Ball has been typically doing something about now, so a chance to get a few wickets.  But our tail don't lie down.  Take Lyon for instance.  England have yet to get him out this series.  Averaging over 30 against them.

Our number 11, averaging 32.5 or something for the last 2 series.  Fair enough he isn't getting bulk runs, but more than capable of tying up an end.

And that is if England were even still there.  I suspect their spirit is already planning what they are doing tonight since they don't have cricket for another week.
Really, they have been waiting for reverse swing.  That is their whole theme.  Wait for something to be handed to them, rather than going and getting it and creating it.

They have had the upper hand many times in the series and blown it,

Feel sorry for Cook , he is doing all the interviews and the back room guys are all hiding .

Some of the poor performance from England is down to him , but the figures show few of the England middle order down can stay at the crease consistently with fast bowling thundering down on them .  And the Aussies have fed of that .

England dont have a ready made alternative captain . Statistically Pietersen is their best batsman this series , but can anyone see him as captain ?
Report BJT December 30, 2013 8:36 AM GMT
That was my suggestion, but won't happen.  Doesn't really matter who, Cook has to go.  The number of times we as viewers had to sit there and watch 4-5 involved in a discussion on field, bowling changes etc is just ridiculous.  There was even occassions where alongside the 3-4 with the bowler, there were also a couple of groups of 2 just having a chat.
What the hell do they have to talk about?  This isn't a mothers club.

Now if Cook is simply a figurehead of the "leadership group", then clearly it isn't working.  They need somebody that can read a game, and make decisions.  The captain is after all the one in charge of the team outside of the coach.
They need somebody with a bit of backbone and somebody prepared to demand respect from his team.  Not somebody that openly admits he is unable to make a decision on his own, and if he does, it is generally wrong.

Can only imagine the motivational talks he gives before going out to the pitch.  I do recall him walking out 15 metres ahead of Carberry with not a word spoken, faced up, and the game was underway without him talking a word to his partner.

There really should already be plans in place.  And there should be enough knowledge from the captain to make in play decisions.  There is every reason to expect others to notice things in the field and make a suggestion, but those people are going to be straight, not in the outfield.  People like the wicketkeeper, and maybe the slips.  Now with Cook being a slip fielder, anything picked up should already be talked about in the slips as play is going on.  If they are changing the field from there, all that really needs to happen, is he changes his field.  They don't need 3-4 or even 5 people at the bowlers run up discussing the plan.  The bowlers should know from their field what the plan is and where he needs to bowl.  The bowler should generally be bowling to the captains orders, not to his own.

There are serious egos at play here, and the captain isn't one of them.  If he can't pull them in line and get them playing for him, then he isn't the man for the job.  Simple as that.

Everybody loves to go on about the divide between Clarke and certain players, but he is a captain.  Aggressive, decisive, and will stand behind any decision he makes.  He opens up a lot of games to be beaten, but what he is really doing, is saying to his team, I believe we can get this done, and this is how we have to do it.
Cook?  He will sit there and wait til somebody else decides what he needs to do to win the game.
Anybody can do that.  Anybody can be involved in a discussion between 5 for the decisions on the fly.

Cook is a decent batsman, but he certainly isn't a captain.
Be interested to know his stats as captain.  Clarke for example averages about 45 I think as a player, and 65 as a captain...

Quite simply, somebody needs to take charge.

As they say, too many Cooks, spoils the broth......

Report geordie1956 December 30, 2013 2:01 PM GMT
Cook has proven he isn't a good captain - does he receive enough respect from the players - I don't know. He needs to be far more ruthless but it isn't in his character from what I see. He should be demanding more from the coaching staff and the director of cricket who haven't been seen since things have gone so wrong - ultimately they have overall responsibility and the captain on the field follows their instructions.  We need someone who will make strong decisions on and off the field, after all they are the fall guy when it doesn't work. That said for the life of me I cannot immediately see anybody with that strength of character within the team or the counties - Brearley wasn't a great player but his captaincy was first class; perhaps in the short team we need to find someone similar who can organise and dictate the structure of the team with specific aims; simply to get the best out of what you have - Cook clearly fails in this respect

Reference on field captaincy ( when bowling side ) , Cook is not a great captain , have to agree with that .  But in current selection , is there a captain in the England team better than Cook ?

Yes, and if it was the batting, does the captain still not play a part?  He plays for draws.  He plays for time.  That is his goal, to wait it out until an opportunity is handed to him.  That is the message he sends to the team with his captaincy, and whether he is the messenger, or the decision maker, that filters through the team.

Is the suggestion that when a player is batting, he is not batting to the team goals?  Pietersen has it drummed into him that he must conform.  Take a look at the difference between when Cook is his partner in the middle, to when he isn't.  Completely different player, to name but one example.

Cook is toxic to the team, in every way.

Would they play for Pietersen?  Not sure, but I don't think it would take long for his aggressive nature to make its way through the team.  When you take the game on, and things start going your way, great things are possible.  When you leave the fate of your team in the oppositions hands, then you require them to fail to prosper.

Australia lost the last series because they failed at the wrong times.  They won this series because they didn't.

Either way, the series was decided by the actions of Australia, not England.  I don't think that is up for debate.
