This wicket could suit Narine. He's world class IMO.

why is there a NZ umpire in the 3rd umpiring job

By:
jesus christ, a comm box of idiots discussing drs when they don't understand it.
By:
I think a sneaky lay of NZ is in order now. How low can NZ really go? Ie WI all out for 120 today what would NZ be? I would hazard a guess and say 1.13-1.15 but that is little damage for a potential price of NZ at 1.50 if the WI manage to get to 250 or am I being too optimistic there?

4 years now.
and it STILL works on the basis of hypothesis testing and falsification where the umpire's decision is the null hypothesis. it's not changed. fack off and read popper. it doesn't need discussing. or at the very least understand the logic behind before pontificating endlessly. ****, it's basic A-level stats. can't someone from the ICC do a one page explanation for every comm box across the world (and the BCCI) |
By:
lol
Never expected to see a reference to Popper on this forum. |
By:
DStyle, I understand your frustration but are the comms not "pontificating endlessly" for the benefit of the uninformed viewer?
By:
no they are not.
because for a system which confuses many, the explanation is staggeringly simple. not least, it's covers a concept which underpins identifying the significance of observed results in practically all scientific research. too often the umpires decision and the result of the predicted path are held up together by the commentators with the notion that the correct decision should be a synthesis of the two. as it was there. at the time of the review the starting point is that the umpire was correct. there then needs to be undisputable evidence provided by the technology that they were wrong. this idea gives a clear explanation for the purpose of the umpire's call/onfield decision. in these cases the technology is not conclusive so it cannot overturn the umpire's decision; it is irrelevant what that decision was. too often the comms use this a marker of uncertainty. and indeed it is, but it is uncertainty in the technology and thus the uncertainty with which one can say the umpire was wrong. not that the decision was uncertain. |

(i'm going to bed now, so shan't be replying anymore, so don't think i'm being rude)
By:
DStyle's explanation is the clearest I've heard of DRS, but I understand what he is talking about with the Null Hypothesis. Unfortunately, his explanation wouldn't be significant for 95% of people.
At least CH 9 comms has stopped talking about Hotspot picking up the 'friction' of the ball hitting the bat. |

hahaha I know slip5... but I did lay nz at 1.22 (most bought back now) so I am also

Think the term "mental strength" is over used in modern day sport....but these two sum it up perfectly for me in comparison to their team mates
By:
That was some batting by those 2 but the nz bowling and probably the pitch was pretty lame too.
By:
Hey DStyle, I bet you got a shock when you woke up and saw the score... hope it was good for you.
By:
Well, I've changed my mind three times already and we have only had day one.
No idea where this is going. Always seem to lose money on Tests involving New Zealand, added to the fact that the best time to trade is when we are asleep over here, I think I'll give them a miss in future. |
By:
I have flip flopped on this one too, from an initial back of NZ and lay of the draw to a grudging respect for this pitch and the draw. It all depends how long the tail can last with Chanderpaul this morning or how long the man himself will last. Anything under 400 could still be a good score for NZ to chase and add to and then put some pressure on the WI second innings. I do have a slight worry that the WI spinners may get something out of this pitch but Best will be ineffective. In fact he may as well not bowl IMHO.
By:
NZ in a spot of trouble here. I don't fancy their prospects batting last against WI spinners. Even if they get WI out quickly here, they still need 400+ first inn to remain favs.
By:
you really think so pxb? So you would be laying NZ and backing the WI all day? I am sort of on the same page there but am really worried about the collapses that the WI do have from time to time. Countering that argument is off course my belief that the WI spinners may do a bit of damage here. But the pitch is not playing quickly so any turn should be able to be negated. NZ should score 400+ here and that in itself will bring this game closer to the draw. Weather looks good for the remaining 4 days. THose showers on Sunday should not amount to much. I am currently in Hamilton and it is going to be a scorcher today. Saw Kane Williamson this morning having a hit in the nets (they are outside the grounds) and it looks like a day full of cricket. May even make my way to the ground on Sunday if I can get time off from work.

NZ matches always seem to spell trouble for me as well. I backed NZ rather than laying the draw here and although it looks bleak at the moment Im going to give it an hour and see what they can do this morning with the newish ball and fresh bowlers.
If they can whittle the last four out for sub 350 I think the prices will make it a tad easier to see a way out of my mess. History very much on the side of a result with only 2 draws in last 12 and one of those was badly waether affected. Weather looks good here so far If its the wrong call im just deeper in the brown and smelly stuff |
By:
Thanks for the updates Tyco, and to you and pxb for your thoughts on the match situation. It's a very interesting situation that is about to play out and a single session can tip the balance or it could fizzle out in a draw. I'm holding fire until tomorrow morning UK time with a small green on NZ and moderate reds on WI and draw although not sure how NZ can win from here barring a second innings WI collapse. Enjoy the day's cricket.

We'll see how NZ go. 400+ definitely on the cards, but below 350 and I'll be laying them.
By:
Yes, I'm reluctant to tinker at the current prices and make things worse so will wait for the end of play today then re-assess. A big score for NZ would get me out of trouble to some extent so the 400 would be nice so long as they score reasonable quickly.
By:
I dont know who has or hant got pictures, but this pitch is playing very well. Even if the WI get 400 there is no reason NZ cannot get 400 either. The only thing is that the spinners of the WI may be a bit better than the NZ spinners. That said, there are (at this stage) barely any footmarks whatsoever.

No access to either pictures or sound so just keep an eye on cricinfo from time to time. No good for trading as they are hopelessly delayed but give the big picture. I tried the radio link you gave last time but not accessible here unfortunately.
