Get home from my 1st day back at work and boy am I shocked, I had a small break in the afternoon, went in the bookies, Australia were on 109-0, a long hop from swann had just been bowled and struck for 4. My thoughts were well they have 180 to get, but the new ball had not got any wickets and I thought well Australia must win this one, this being a new ball pitch. Got home from work, Aussies all out, unbeleivable and went to my predictions in that Aussies would have to chase anything between 270-320 and the Aussies weren't going to chase down any more than between 220-230, bingo 224 all out.

Report lustrumm August 12, 2013 8:16 PM BST
if you look back at the innings commentary the signs were there. England had stopped the rot and leading up to the 4th wicket the RR was in free fall. All they were missing were the wickets and once they started to tumble after Tea it ended quickly but the key was slowing the RR and building the pressure and even though Australia continued to shorten in hindsight the market mistook steadyness for pressure
Report Hushwing. August 12, 2013 8:18 PM BST
also the market mistook umpires 'guessing' on a couple of lbws
Report sewter lives again August 12, 2013 8:31 PM BST

Report geordie1956 August 12, 2013 8:43 PM BST
Days like today show why test match cricket is the best sport viewing there is - I love most sports but cricket when it produces a proper good test match - forget the one day nonsense - is as good as it gets - obviously it helps when England win but just to watch is superb - bring on the Oval then the winter series - long nights but worthwhile
Report cricnut August 12, 2013 8:49 PM BST
Yes, Aussies did do well and would probably have got more than 238 batting first, however earlier in this thread, I stated that winning teams win and continue to do so, where losing teams lose and do likewise. I have also stated on this thread, that England are a team in slight detoriation and Aussies are a team slowly improving, but the fact is reflected in the score 3-0 and although we have had 1 close match, a 75 run defeat, in a lowish scoring match, is still a biggish margin.
Report cricnut August 12, 2013 8:55 PM BST
and well said Geordie, Test Match Cricket is the best sport, there can possibly be, all this 1 day stuff, is about as exciting, as watching grass grow and nothing can match a Test Match, where over a game, there are generally so many ebbs and flow. I was rivetted to the sofa yesterday, watching the play, which was hardly quick, but it was a  fantastic days cricket. Unfortunatly work meant I couldn't see todays events live, but am looking forward to the highlights on Sky later on. Todays play, must have been even more exciting and intruiging than any other day in this great series
Report Hushwing. August 12, 2013 8:56 PM BST
first test aussies nearly and were unlucky not to win if u remember? everyone seems to forget about that. so yep aussie win toss aussi wouldve won np.
2nd test ok aussies played poor and england deserve that win . last test only weather cost aussies a win and this test well the toss decided it.

if Aus had won all the toss i'm pretty sure the score be 2-1 in their favour.

i know you'll all scoff n doubt it but i'm telling you batting first in the DRS age on these pitches it the MAIN DECIDING FACTOR when teams are evenly matched
Report ReaseHeath August 12, 2013 9:06 PM BST
^ let's just do the coin flips then, and not bother playing the actual Test Matches.

England 3-1 up with one toss to come.

Let Clarke flip the coin next time, he looks like a bit of a ****.
Report Hushwing. August 12, 2013 9:12 PM BST
well 5 tests why not have 1 toss and then take it in turns? surely much fairer system ,common sense really
Report inner city sumo August 12, 2013 9:13 PM BST
Didn't Australia win every toss and elect to bat every test against the Indians? Two evenly matched teams clearly, since average old England kept pace with India and Australia are apparently superior to England...

Report cricnut August 12, 2013 9:31 PM BST
Cricket matches are not won on the toss of a coin Hushwing, it is won by who plays the better cricket over the 5 days. DRS Test Cricket in Australia as well, but the fact is Australia bowl with 2 bowlers, England bowl with 4 and sometimes 5. All your rantings about DRS, the umpires have been very poor in this series and we should go back to having the best umpires, umpiring these games, whether they be English, Australian or from outer Mongolia.
Report geordie1956 August 12, 2013 9:57 PM BST
totally agree with cri**** - the best umpires should umpire the big tests - it isn't difficult to say 2 Englishman & 2 Australians to cover the Ashes series if they are the best umpires - I must admit to being disappointed with the umpires this series, particularly Alim Dar as I do consider him to be one of the best - the problem is that umpiring is very subjective and DRS has changed everything because every decision made (or not given) is contentious and the umpires are under complete scrutiny - not sure what the answer is though because if you relinquish the final authority from an umpire then what are they there for
Report cricnut August 12, 2013 10:02 PM BST
Now having seen the highlights, I can't see what your problem was, with DRS, the Umpires gave or didn't give and DRS shows whether its hitting or not and in every case, the ball was hitting. Perhaps you should teach your beloved Aussie team, how and when to use it. They have been alot worse than England in their use of it, in this series.
Report oddduck August 12, 2013 10:04 PM BST
Broad will take the plaudits and rightly so but Bresnan was excellent today. Absolute jaffer to get warner which started the collaps
Report cricnut August 12, 2013 10:08 PM BST
Well the umpires, certainly got it more right, before DRS, thats for sure, but we definatly need the best umpires for these Ashes games. England are 3-0 up and 6 Tests to go, including the Australian Tests, but please lets have the best umpires. If we get rid of DRS, I think the umpires would get more right, than wrong.
Report inner city sumo August 12, 2013 10:27 PM BST
Let Michael Clarke umpire it. The form they're in they'd still find a way to lose, even if as is apparent they believe they have the much better side.
Report cdog August 12, 2013 11:09 PM BST
Let's not feel guilty about winning a lot of tosses in this series. When Mark Taylor was captain didn't he win 5 out of 6 tosses in 1997 and every single toss in 98/99? That's what I call greedy.
Report cricnut August 12, 2013 11:27 PM BST
Don't feel guilty about winning tosses, the best Cricket team has won this series and if anyone thinks  the results may have been different, well thats up to them, the best side will win the game, whatever happens at the toss, however the teams aren't particularly evenly matched. Take away a freak last wicket partnership, which I'm not and that Test would have been one sided as well and the way Bell has been batting, there was no guarantee Australia, would have bowled England out at Old Trafford, had it not rained, they may have done, but England never stop battling.
Report mafeking August 12, 2013 11:44 PM BST
cdog, alec stewart called heads (or was it tails ?) all 5 times in 1998/99. surely you have vary your call. very poor captaincy

oz lost this yesterday. about as bad a day as you could realistically have on this pitch. even a reasonable performance yesterday and they'd have been chasing sub 200

lords aside england have just won virtually all the key moments in the 3 other tests
Report bobojon August 13, 2013 3:18 AM BST
toss may have been a factor in other games but in this test the pitch didn't deteriate much it was pretty much the same on day 4 as day 3.  Aust lost because they let Bell get away from them yesterday and collapsed today after a good start, not much to do with the toss.

Still feel in Australian conditions it could be a pretty close return series not that this hasn't been close.  Not much between the teams - but Australia need to find 2 extra batters who are test standard which is the current difference in the teams.
