Current forecast is rain on 4 of 5 days. Too early to tell if just showers or more persistent rain. I expect a fair amount of volatility over the next week. My current estimate is we lose at least 1 session, and possibly rather more.

it has been lashing down in manchester for the past week on and off with similar forecasts ahead.

the drainage is very good at OT and the ground staff are good as well.

I would not be surprised if we lost a session here and there.  I would be surprised if it mattered as the pitch will be incredibly dry and take spin hence the Panesar selection.

Am left chasing my tail tonight having backed England pre-match and layed the draw early in running. Have decided to take a chance on backing England again at nine and a bit in the hope that the price will eventually fall back to a level where I can significantly reduce liabilities. If it doesn't work, well I haven't increased liabilities by very much percentage wise.
Hoping that England will be more successful tomorrow. Often happens following a breakthrough.
Report Foinavon August 1, 2013 11:36 PM BST
Sorry, wrong thread. You might deduce that I'm hoping that there won't be much in the way of rain.
Report gradgrind August 1, 2013 11:45 PM BST
I'm in the same boat foinavon. Wondering if a bit of rain in the air will help the bowlers early on. With a couple of early wickets do you think we would see much of a drop in eng price?
Report Foinavon August 2, 2013 12:34 AM BST
A couple might not be enough, really need to see four out by lunch. If England can limit Australia to a reasonable score then make a good start themselves the price should come in significantly. Hoping for a price around 4 in order to reverse out. My red on the draw is twice that on Australia. Sad
Report Foinavon August 2, 2013 12:44 AM BST
That's a lot of wishful thinking though. If Australia get well past 400, it starts to look grim.

Think oz still a fantastic price here England on back foot expect oz to post around 500 by tea today leave 30 overs to bowl at England and try to get into them early

1st time England under pressure here

England gone 2-0 up in recent ashes series and lost the 3rd test both times heavily think they take there foot off the peddle a bit

Just think there's two possible outcomes draw or oz and 9/4 is huge as they are going to go all out for the win

England are a good lay at any price (as are Australia as well for that matter)
England have already thrown their hat at this game and anyway by the time rain intervenes (and it will be well before Monday) England will still be at the crease for the first innings.
If Australia could get to 500+ and declare England are liable to be only 5 down for the same total on Sunday

In truth it doesn't matter anymore now that England have avoided the follow on. I'll never understand how people were so anxious to get with the draw on the first 2 tests and yet it has taken until this Afternoon for them to realise there cannot be a result in this Test.
Did Australia suddenly become world beaters on 2 weeks R&R to make 527 a match winning score.
Even now at 1.2 if you had the money it is picking up chips in truth.
There won't even be a second innings here in my view not to mind a result

Won't matter though the draw is signed sealed and delivered. The only chance for a result was the follow on and that is gone now
Report BJT August 4, 2013 6:10 AM BST
Pietersen for the most part played a good innings, but he certainly had more than his fair share of lucky moments.  There were chances all day and England got the better of it.  They could easily have been all out for 250.

The other thing you seem to have left out in regards to them suddenly becoming world beaters, is the obvious point that they won the toss this match and chose to bat.  England have batted under the best conditions for the first 2 tests and Aus got their chance this match and took full advantage of it.

Rain is the only thing saving England this match.  Sad for a team expected by its fans to win 5-0 that they really need to win the toss or they can't perform.
Report lustrumm August 4, 2013 10:53 AM BST
Agreed, the signs are good for Australia for the remaining Tests. However unfortunately the Rain is a big player for the remaining fixtures.

We are all looking at the same pictures I assume and at the SKY when the TV Cameras show it. It's a grand day and there is no sign of rain (yet) It's almost noon now and if anything it is getting brighter.

Separately I must give credit to England this morning for at least making an effort to play and give us some entertainment.

The result might not be in doubt at this stage but all credit to them for playing some shots. The RR for the innings (131) is now up to 2.7 which is remarkable imo considering where it was
