Starting in four days time, India have announced three changes to their 12. On the basis that Harbajhan wasn't in the Kolkatra 11, these are not exactly sweeping changes although to make widespread changes during a series demonstrates that India's selectors got it wrong, not something they are traditionally akin to doing.

England have taken their time to get their side right - they got it badly wrong for the first Test but now Finn and Panesar have found their way into the side and made significant contributions in the following Tests.

I do not know much about the bowler that has been brought in but I know about Chawla and Jadeja (who has just scored his third triple century at the age of 24 albeit in the Ranji).

My thoughts on this are similar to Jan 2011 when England were 2-1 up in the Ashes but it was lets go for the 3-1. Having said that you are only one session away from putting yourself under major pressure but 2.58 for India looks a good value lay for me. Anderson, Swann and Finn bowled well and Panesar has bowled better but if all are up for it then India could remain under the cosh for this Test as well. There does not appear to be the atmosphere in place for significant improvement to the India dressing room to merit backing India at current prices.

Need some news on the pitch but England have outplayed on a turning surface and a reasonably good surface in Mumbai and Kolkatra. What would be nice would be for Compton to get a ton after being a contributor of sorts and for Prior to have a slightly better time behind the stumps (although he has been terrific since 2009)

Only a few days to go. A draw will make this Englands first win in India since Pocock, Foster and Edmonds did the business in 1984/5

do not see it personally as india will go for the win within reason thats if england are bowled out in short enough time once they lose or if they lose the top 3 batsman then shut up draw, england to be bowled out in 40 overs and england to take 10 wkts is at least 25 imo
Report PLEASE TELL THE TRUTH December 16, 2012 4:05 PM GMT
the only team who can realisticaly win is india by bowling out england in say 35 to 45 overs max Shocked then chase the runs down consequently think india could be considered fair value at 20. If you like england or think they should be shorter than india lix then you should be laying the draw imo Happy
Report Lix December 16, 2012 4:45 PM GMT
does no one fancy another 100 runs from eng in 35 overs leaving india a very tough chase of 260 in 53 overs.

If they went for the runs (which they would do) they'd probably lose trying to force a win. eng big favs for me
over india in that scenario. do india have the desire to bat out a draw knowing the series is gone?

Report PLEASE TELL THE TRUTH December 16, 2012 6:19 PM GMT
india can realistically win and are potentially a great trade with a few early wkts they will be single digits for sure england will only drift until they start to take wkts which they may not need to if they keep batting and if they do will need to take 10 wkts very quickly in 40/50 overs Happy
Report lanza December 16, 2012 6:20 PM GMT
cant see why eng would declare.
not expecting eng lose 7 wicket first session.

eng bat 2 rpo a/o by lunch ???  =+225 / 60
eng bat 2 rpo +10 more over =+245/50
eng bat 2 rpo +10 more over =+265/40
eng bat 2 rpo to tea a/o  =+285/30

eng bat 2.5 rpo a/o by lunch ???  =+240 / 60
eng bat 2.5 rpo +10 more over =+265/50
eng bat 2.5 rpo +10 more over =+290/40
eng bat 2.5 rpo to tea a/o  =+315/30

eng bat 3 rpo a/o by lunch ???  =+255 / 60
eng bat 3 rpo +10 more over =+285/50
eng bat 3 rpo +10 more over =+315/40
eng bat 3 rpo to tea a/o  =+345/30

think eng run rate will be closer to 2 than 3.
Report PLEASE TELL THE TRUTH December 16, 2012 6:21 PM GMT
you will get more or less 20 / 25 england before india bat unles england bowled out in say 25/30 overs which is unlikely as the odds suggest thats why you are better of laying the draw than backing england imo
Report PLEASE TELL THE TRUTH December 16, 2012 6:27 PM GMT
good take Lanza and i am not saying england can not win just stating they are poor value at the current odds 20 / 25 given the current state of the match verses India who can potentially trade much lower if they make some early in road. Essentially England will trade slightly lower on wkts India will trade much lower on wkts that is why India are favs over england.
Report PLEASE TELL THE TRUTH December 16, 2012 6:43 PM GMT
comparatively sri lanka are far better value at 25 than england at 25 because clarke as shown his cards early for a resonable declaration by dec at 450/5 in the 1st innings and you also get the chance of Aus being skittled and 2 days left in the match with sri lanka showing positive batting intent in their 1st innings, maybe wrong thread Shocked but just comparing value Happy

I found all the chat about the pitch pretty tedious. It was blamed for the dull match.

Ok it was slow with no turn. But if India could bat they would have got 450 and the match would have been very interesting.

If we had to win, the tempo would have been higher and we would have declared, leaving a tantalising chase.

The pitch was dead but India's weaknesses and England's contentment with a draw were the reasons for a dull game.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves December 18, 2012 12:03 AM GMT
I think India were equally content with a draw, Injera, and the pitch was dead for precisely this reason.

screaming from beneaththewaves     12 Dec 12 07:52
Have backed the draw at 5/2 in a couple of Ladcrokes shops.

Not many Ranji Trophy games on this ground, but the most recent have been slow, high-scoring draw pitches.

More to the point, I believe a draw would suit both teams here. England would obviously get their series win, while Dhoni et al. would avoid a defeat, which would be enough for Srinivasan (BCCI boss and Super Kings owner), to face down all the calls to sack him immediately. "Avoided defeat ... turned the corner ... signs of promise ... wise head needed ... no time for knee-jerk reactions ... etc."

I love the way Dhoni even managed to identify the obligatory positives for the future in his post-match interviewLaugh:

"We tried a few combinations that really worked. We were playing with the four bowlers (two fast and two spinners) for quite some time but over the years what we have seen is that we had some part timers who could bowl 15-16 overs if needed which we really have lost. So that means we need to bring in someone like Ravindra Jadeja into the side to keep a lid on the batsmen.

"Cheteshwar Pujara's batting was a positive, Virat Kohli's batting and attitude was good and Gautam Gambhir got back in the runs," he added.

So there we are. A bore draw was all that Dhoni and his sponsors required to be able to spin a Dhoni-led future.
