Report jajabink July 12, 2012 10:30 AM BST

Report jajabink July 12, 2012 10:32 AM BST

23 overs 78 (with 1 or 2 wkts) and then 10 overs 60 (with 6 wkts) - easy win for lankans

SL back batting for the victory
Report sporttrading. July 12, 2012 10:50 AM BST
With 20 overs left it should look like T20 if SL holds on to 7 or 8 wickets in hand
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 10:52 AM BST
yeah they are well intrested in the win already 1 up dont need to win so i would say 30% win 70% draw
Report mistrzuniu July 12, 2012 10:52 AM BST
bad start
Report nicky27 July 12, 2012 10:52 AM BST
they don't seem to be playing aggressive enoughCry
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 10:53 AM BST

Report jajabink July 12, 2012 10:56 AM BST
run rate now 4.44 with all overs in,hope you draw layers got out
Report fuzzer July 12, 2012 10:56 AM BST
Plenty of time to go yet. They were never going to swing the bat straight after tea.
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 10:58 AM BST
run rate will be 5+ within 20 minutes, mark my words, not swing the bat but 1 run a over
Report betfire July 12, 2012 10:58 AM BST
5 an over gettable...
Report mistrzuniu July 12, 2012 11:00 AM BST
if they dont score now, they dont be score when will be 5 an over
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:00 AM BST
gettable yes but last 4 overs 3 runs, they dont need to win will be happy with draw
Report Rider July 12, 2012 11:01 AM BST
2 wickets all day and commentators not ruling out a pak win (8 wickets in 29 overs)
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:01 AM BST
4.57 now so within 15-20 minutes it will be over 5
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:02 AM BST

Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:06 AM BST
well done yash get on 1.26 before it goes
Report fuzzer July 12, 2012 11:06 AM BST
Yep.... looks like the skipper's decided to bat out for a draw during tea. Very dull!
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:07 AM BST
very weird scoring at 3.4 before tea now 2.0,i know they lost a wicket but whats the point
Report nicky27 July 12, 2012 11:09 AM BST
sanga doesn't want to risk the possibility of the series going 1-1 and therefore is quite happy to play for the draw , it must have been what they decided at the tea interval after chandimal's wicket fell ...if chandimal was still there i think they would have gone for it
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:09 AM BST
132 off 27 = 4.88 getting there will draw at 1.1 just for fun
Report nicky27 July 12, 2012 11:10 AM BST
this will train to the draw now , 1.1 look like value
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:10 AM BST
but theyve got 8 wkts in hand go 5 or 6 down fair enough but not 2 down, this is what makes test cricket so boring
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:11 AM BST
matched at 1.1 hope for some fireworks now maybe
Report betfire July 12, 2012 11:11 AM BST

Report nicky27 July 12, 2012 11:25 AM BST
i don't understand their approach since tea ,...circumspect , then go for it ?? why not just go for it straight away and if you lose wickets then bat out the draw ...
Report nicky27 July 12, 2012 11:26 AM BST
might as well shake hands ,cos sri lanka aint gonna go for it and pak won't take 7 wickets
Report cnman July 12, 2012 11:26 AM BST
Only way we'd have a result here is if SL sent in Herath or Kulasekara to slog a few. Samaweera walking to the crease means gsm draw
Report fuzzer July 12, 2012 11:26 AM BST
I agree. Fair enough to take a couple of overs to feel your feet, and even then they didn't need to go mad - just a few singles in each over would have kept them up to speed.
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:28 AM BST
as i said before a bit weird to go at 3.4 a over then 2 a over, whats the point makes test cricket less watchable,i rarely watch these days more a 20-20 man myself
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:30 AM BST
draw back out 1.18 whats going on
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 11:31 AM BST
not drawing yet as sangakara going for it now . What was mahela doing just now ?

He was going for it when he got out .

Report jajabink July 12, 2012 11:36 AM BST
its not likely still 5.2 a over needed
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 11:41 AM BST
boundaries will help tho . Dun care what the r/r is . Lankans needs to do it in boundaries now for a chance
Report Biscuit1979 July 12, 2012 11:41 AM BST
100 runs to get off 20 overs, if they don't at least try and go for this, then it's a bit pathetic.

Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:02 PM BST
not likely now . Lankans wont risk it .
Report cnman July 12, 2012 12:03 PM BST
Pakistan should be shorter than SL here. No way SL go for it now they're 4 down
Report Biscuit1979 July 12, 2012 12:04 PM BST
I know they don't need to win but it's a strange mentality to not want to win the match from the position they were in an hour ago. Why not go for it and then if you lose 3 or 4 wickets, shut up shop and settle for the draw. Crawling along and settling for the draw anyway is poor.
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:05 PM BST
question that remains now is whether pakistan can get lankans out now . Lankans not going for it anymore . Hopefully we'll see some wickets then
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:08 PM BST
Come on Ajmal!!!
Report betfire July 12, 2012 12:10 PM BST
no spin for ajmal..
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:21 PM BST
lankans clearly had let this slip in my opinion . Mahela's fault
Report billy July 12, 2012 12:24 PM BST
My only concern was the weather when I was laying the hell out of the draw on the 2nd day. Guess that's why I don't bet on cricket very much.
Report Yawn.. July 12, 2012 12:25 PM BST
Even at this late stage these two should just be swinging at everything, as soon as one of them falls then they could just shake hands.

This is a fine example of why people of turning test cricket off, the chance of a bit of excitment and the players dont seem to want to know!
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:25 PM BST
shaking hands after hitting 2 boundaries . Sri lankans clearly number 1 fixed team wtf
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 12:28 PM BST
hit 2 fours needed 75 off 54 balls,i agree clearly fixed, mind you its sri lanka isnt it so no sursprise,
Report Biscuit1979 July 12, 2012 12:30 PM BST
Mahela hit 11 off 40 odd balls, and SL scored just 26 off the last 10 overs. As you all say, why not hit out for a bit then if you lose a couple of wickets then block it out.
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 12:30 PM BST
i cant grasp why they were shaking hands
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:30 PM BST
i'll like to ask mahela questions on that man . What was he doing playing way off his best .
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 12:31 PM BST
the weird thing is he hit 2 fours just before shaking hands, why bother,i would demand a refund on this game as clearly fixed to someones advantage,i dont mind losing my green profit because it makes a mockery of the game
Report jajabink July 12, 2012 12:33 PM BST
some people have lost on this game laying the draw, and in the end it seems they never had a prayer because sri lanka were never intrested in the win
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:55 PM BST
mahela's interview was unimpressed .

"270 was on isn't it ?"

"I guess we won the test match isn't it"

wtf mahela . As professionals , u should be doing your best to win games . Losing a wicket or 2 and u can shut up shop . We won't mind that . You did not even try ffs
Report Lix July 12, 2012 12:56 PM BST
270 was a very tough ask. blame the bowlers for not bowling out Pak sooner. 250 would have been chased imo.
Report Iamafish July 12, 2012 12:57 PM BST
Lix , its not a tough ask if u knew they had the chance before tea . Once chandimal was gone , they didnt feel like playing .
Report Lix July 12, 2012 1:01 PM BST
agree they should have sent Parera or Kula in above Samaraweera and seen what happens. very very little to lose and if he scores 20 off 25 balls it can put a different complexion on the chase.
Report STEPTOES YARD July 12, 2012 1:47 PM BST
wont solve the whole issue of sides backing off from a chase but maybe tests should in future be played out in full, meaning no early finish.

Might lead to some dull finishes but for me crowd deserve full days cricket and dont see why players should get to stroll off 15 overs early.
Report Lix July 12, 2012 5:07 PM BST
I'd like something like 1 legside ball per over allowed. Anymore gets called a wide same as ODIs. The good spinners will still be able to pitch em legside and turn em so they hit the batsman and arent wided but could still add 5-10 runs to a chasing team and give the bowler something to think about maybe causing him to bowl the odd duff ball which gets put away.
Report wise-punt July 12, 2012 6:59 PM BST
SL did not try to win. Were it dodgy intentions or poor play?
Report Lix July 12, 2012 8:34 PM BST
they did (a bit) 270 in 70 overs very tough in test cricket tho against economical spinners. would have gone for it if they were losing or drawing the series i believe. At 1-0 up and having not won a series since murali retired they just wanted the easy win.
Report Asparagus Man July 12, 2012 9:24 PM BST
I think that's right Lix - we've had previews of this with Colombo and Dominica in recent years.

Dominica in fact marked the beginning of the end for India to my mind.

What teams would have tried to chase this down - probably the non-draw specialists Eng/Oz/SA?

For Lanka today though they had a series to protect, and the ghosts of Cardiff in their mind. They scored at the same rr as the rest of the match - it's not as if they were blocking relative to the rest of the game - they just weren't bothered about winning.

Which fundamentally is a shame for the game and for them, but years of betting on test cricket has taught me that with very occasional exceptions test match captains always veer to the conservative and safe.
Report cnman July 12, 2012 9:33 PM BST
yeah people calling this a fix is pretty ridiculous book talking. Was fairly obvious after tea they weren't going for it, and while it's a sad reflection on test cricket these days, it was pretty inevitable imo with SL looking for their first series win in years
Report Lix July 13, 2012 11:40 AM BST
Michael Clarke is a breath of fresh air as a captain. Has made several v bold decisions of late (declaring on WI when behind etc..) and has said he's not scared to lose the odd game if it means winning more often.
Report Lix July 13, 2012 11:53 AM BST
they shook hands yesterday with SL still needing about 8 an over for 9 overs i think...SAnga had just hit two boundaries off the over and Ajmal had bowled his 26th over of the day and was getting tired. what I'd LOVE to see one time is a top batsman like Sanga or someone say..."I'm gonna have a go at this" and try to win a game off his own bat and then call the draw if and when they get out.

If this seems too risky (ffs!!) they could still block a  few overs and let the equation be 55 off 30 or something with 5 wkts left if he got out.. basically almost impossible to lose. Its obviously a huge long shot and might mean a batsman's precious average suffers but i dont see why batsmen never go for this glory type scenario if the team are in a no lose position. I understand people saying "its test cricket, you can put all the fielders on one side etc..scoring 10 an over is IMPOSSIBLE etc.. "

Fact is, it is not impossible. If you hit a 6 it doesnt matter where the fielders are. you can also hit straight over the bowler... again, no fielders allowed there. You can counter legside bowling with switch hits and if you KNOW a bowler is bowing legside you can move legside too and hit to off. These things are difficult i agree but not impossible and worth a go. It might be a 30/40 to 1 shot but IT IS TOTALLY RISK FREE.
