Colin Jackson has a point,MJ just didnt get it.

She wanted a medal just not a Gold after the furore following the last Olympics, now if she is allowed to compete in the womans events it shouldnt be a problem........but for some it clearly is.

Looked at Jackson like he'd just pissed on his kids.

Johnson's a winner so can't comprehend the idea of someone not wanting to win. Personally I think Jackson's right on this occasion. Semenya runs at the front when she's trying!!
Report LordBobbin August 11, 2012 8:17 PM BST
Makes sense to me. She poured it on going past those athletes. Deep down she knows she could take all of them, but didn't want all the headlines all over again. Maybe it's enough to her that she herself knows she was the best there.

Doesn't make me feel any better for having lost money backing her though!!!

True Doktor. I couldn't believe how far back she was in comparison to her usual running style. I assumed there must be something wrong with her until she turned it on at the end.

Understand Jackson's point, but don't agree with it myself. If she hadn't wanted to win then stay the phook away.

As for what Johnson was thinking....

I think retarded is the word he was looking for.

Loved the way Lewis tried to come to his rescue. Pathetic.

Staying away wouldn't have been the same at all. She had to test herself and know how much more she could have produced. It's like when you give the computer a 9 goal start in a football game and you end up losing by a goal. You know you would have destroyed it had you faced the computer on 'equal' terms.  In this case she didn't want to win, so she gave them all a big headstart so that she could still work out whether or not she was the best.
Report upthebumnobabies August 11, 2012 8:26 PM BST
He's probably gone to Commentary cos of the 400m
Report LordBobbin August 11, 2012 8:27 PM BST
Why shouldn't he have said it?   What's wrong with somebody saying something controversial???  He's putting the idea out there.  Just because Michael Johnson (who's never not tried to win a race in his life) couldn't fathom it, it doesn't mean that everybody thinks the same way.
Report dc August 11, 2012 8:27 PM BST
If the girl DID decide not to win, it's almost certainly down to her experience of the type of bullies that seem to infect this forum. Vile stuff.
Report LordBobbin August 11, 2012 8:29 PM BST
Semenya got an absolute sh!t storm after the last time. And yes, I was one of those who was and who remains dubious about whether she should be competing. I don't blame her for wanting to wake up all the same tired rants again.

Tonight has confirmed it tenfold.

Report LordBobbin August 11, 2012 8:41 PM BST
Flyingbolt, because otherwise she doesn't really know deep down how well she would have done. She's competed, and perhaps she knows she gave them a few seconds and still took silver. She knows that had she gone closer to the front (as she does in most of her races) she would have beaten the lot.

She now *knows* that she could have won had she wanted to. That's the point. If she had been sitting at home right now, she might have had a little guess, but she wouldn't have *known* how she would really have fared. But now she does.
Report chelters16 August 11, 2012 8:41 PM BST

Live abd let live. That applies to people whose views you disagree with. Shrieking that someone shames our country is pathetic just because you disagree with how they see things.
Report asparagus August 12, 2012 1:23 AM BST
Jackson made a decent point imo. Whilst i wouldn't say she was a deliberate non-trier I think she went into the race scared of winning. She ran negatively and ended up messing it up and coming 2nd. Uncomfortable with the thought of winning rather than not wanting to win. She went through hell previously and by coming 2nd she won't get noticed this time. Having said all that Savinova did run extremely well and for me you could only say it would have been close if Semenya had got her tactics right.
Report louie87 August 12, 2012 1:28 AM BST
nah Eeternaloptimist, it's pretty fair to say to some bigot that they shame their country. Whether you shriek it or not is irrelevant. I doubt you'd leap to the defence of someone who said black people disgust them so gallantly.
Report judorick August 12, 2012 1:28 AM BST
isn't that russian savinova another that served a suspension for a doping violation?

if not why not?
Report ArmchairIdiot August 12, 2012 1:51 AM BST
To suggest Samenya didn't want to win gold is absurd. Have people forgotten she'd done all the tests etc and been very publicly cleared to race?

It was all BEHIND her, and any talk of 'he or she' in the event of winning gold would have been dismissed emphatically with hard facts. She simply messed up her tactics.
Report LordBobbin August 12, 2012 4:27 AM BST
'Hard facts'?  She's borderline female/male. That's been proven medically, and there remain plenty who think she has an unfair advantage over 'other' women due to her abnormal makeup.   At the very least, her winning would have brought up lots of jokes and sneering comments about her sexuality - far more than you see here.
Report TheVis August 12, 2012 8:35 AM BST
I hate to say it but during the race I was thinking "she doesn't want this" and I think Jackson made a fair point.  Would also love to know the names of those who he said were happy just to get a silver.

This thread also shows that there would still have been an incredible load of shyte stirred up about the he/she debate.  I can understand why she wouldn't have wanted to go through all that again.
Report berto77 August 12, 2012 10:56 AM BST
I criticised Jackson immediately afterwards (mainly because his punditry is embarrassing) but as I've reflected and understood the point he was trying to make I think it was valid.

I've no idea whether or not she wanted to win, but it's certainly plausible that she feared the consequences of winning the gold.  I therefore officially withdraw my withering remarks about Jackson!
Report zekial August 12, 2012 1:18 PM BST

Report judorick August 12, 2012 1:28 PM BST
no he isn't

sexuality has nothing to do with gender
Report DonNo1 August 12, 2012 1:39 PM BST
I laid her before the end of the 1st lap, you could tell she was a non-trier and not interested in winning.  Jackson made a good point, Johnson is class but people need to stop hanging off his every word
