Has anyone ever missed out on a medal, or dropped a medal place, because when it went to countback they had deliberately fouled the key countback throw/jump?

They don't have count-back in field events? It's possible for multiple athletes to share a medal (like the Mens High Jump)

If you mean when they count fouls whether it was done on purpose or not is not a factor.

If athlete A has XXO and Athlete B has XO, athlete B would win. Doesn't matter if any X's were on purpose or not.

I doubt it's ever happened, as athletes will know deep into the competition if they're in medal contention, and therefore wouldn't foul on purpose.

Unless they lay themselves on BF of course Devil

I was thinking more the throws and long jump really. If two athletes have thrown 65.50 in the javelin do they both get bronze these days, I thought in the past it went to second best throw for each athlete, and if that is the case the deliberate fouls could be a problem.

it's done like you describe, you're right, if someone fouls on purpose every throw from the 2nd on like Obergföll did yesterday it might happen, if another athlete equalizes in the 6th one, can't remember ever having that seen though.

Not sure.  Wouldn't happen in long jump as athletes don't deliberately foul unlike in some of the throws.

It's unlikely 2 athletes would throw or jump the exact distance. But if they did they would share the medal, it doesn't go down to performance in previous throws. The GB guy shared bronze with 2 other athletes in High Jump the other night. They talked about it in the studio where MJ said it was stupid. Denise Lewis said they can't do "Jump Offs" etc as it could impact who had the Gold. If one of the jumpers in a bronze Jump Off went higher than the athlete who already got the gold, it would cause protests and problems.

different in vertical jumps than in throws or horizontal jumps, there definately the 2nd best attempt counts for deciding positions
