Given the culture & nature of the sport + the considerable improvement shown by almost every team member you can`t have this more than 25% IMO.

Apart from the patriots who want to bask in glory any serious views ?

why focus on one team in one sport?

reckon there is massive doping right across the olympics
Report scoobeck August 8, 2012 1:31 AM BST
Yes but the British accuse every other country of doping when someone seemingly peforms superhumanly but blindly ignore their own.
Report judorick August 8, 2012 1:36 AM BST
they are all at it imo

you just can't recover from massive performances like that in such short time without some assistance and I've ready lots of medical research about it which shows the same

I'd go for 100%. It's just an unfortunate consequence of the recent success & publicity of cycling that it gets comments from ignorant halfwits who don't know anything about its recent history, the intensity of the training, tactical and technical sophistication of the GB team, or apparently what even the mildest indications of substance abuse in sport look like. Nobody has done more than Wiggins & Brailsford for example to clean up the Tour(which is partly how they won it!)and those competitors (actually fewer than 15 in as many years) testing positive in that event have abused EPO, which has benefits in gruelling mountain stages of road races but would probably be detrimental in track cycling. And they certainly ain't on steroids (Laura Trott? Pendleton? Ed Clancy? Seriously?).But that's as much as I want to dignify these monkey noises with a response. Go post something about crack abuse in the equestrian team. It makes as much sense.
Report RAPS August 8, 2012 2:36 AM BST

Report Darlo Bantam August 8, 2012 2:50 AM BST
Oh because that has to be due to drugs doesn't it. Really strange that athletes of any sport would tailor and taper their training to peak for the biggest competition of their lives. I can't understand why they'd do that.
Report RAPS August 8, 2012 2:54 AM BST
yes. I compepete in minor Tours and these guys can`t help themselves - they wouldn`t feel normal without a bit of "Help".
The Idea that that they could compete at the highest level without help is just a mega LOL

100% down to drugs imo.

The daily drug of waking up & wanting to bust a gut to win a London Olympic Gold.
Strength & depth of team meant you had to had to break PBs on a regular basis just to get selected.
Sir Chris Hoys double gold was no doubt aided by the drug of trying to get no 1 spot in the individual sprint busting a gut on a daily basis just trying to get selected.

Sour grapes particulary from the drug taking Bauge how ironic,it was interesting to see Boardman saying the GB bikes have been on sale for 2 years and nobody has bought one.
Report marychain1 August 8, 2012 8:28 AM BST
People are missing the obvious here.

With a budget something like 15 times greater than any other nation, our 4 top quality velodromes and training centres we have in this country, by far the biggest participator numbers and the with the most thorough, innovative coaches, the best behind-the-scenes teams, the best training plans designed purely to peak & coincide with The Olympics.

Anyone who's driven through Manchester to see the stunning amount of Sky/GB cyclists training everywhere will know the size of the operation going on up there.

To attribute the achievements to drugs is just lazy. Worse, its pure projectionism.

There is absolutely no way these successes are down to drugs. Its just the natural consequence of having the best budgets and spending the money the smartest way. Like the Kiwi Rugby team, or the Aussie cricket team in the 20 years following the late 80s, or the Spanish football team. What you are seeing is talent+hard work+long term planning by a set of genius coaches.

Besides, drug cheating in sport, and cycling especially, might be a way to short term success, but with the links between GB and the pro team and the biometric passport system pro cyclists now adhere to, where any changes in body norms and peaks in performance have to be explained mean that drug cheats will get caught. Also, riders now agree that samples can be stored and tested retrospectively. So the old argument that the drug cheats are a step ahead of the testers no longer applies.

There might be stuff the testers cant discover yet, but it is mathematically guaranteed these days that one day it will catch up with you and you will get done. A bit different from the old days. Lastly, there is a massive difference to those who know when they've seen something ridiculous, between the "I am clean and I would never dope" (Wiggins) and the "I've never failed a test" (Armstrong). And to say the GB Team, all steeped in an anti-doping culture would dope just smacks of nastiness and sour grapes at some good old fashioned deserved success.
Report shiraz August 8, 2012 8:35 AM BST
It's natural to question how a collective group of athletes perform better than their normal standard, but it is wrong to assume there is some sort of "cheating" going on.

I would say these results are a combination of the hard work and dedication of the athletes combined with home crowd and some top quality coaching.  Add in a bit of technology, (Team GB have a Research & Development Dept. "The Secret Squirrels) and you have gained those vital extra few fractions of a second.  Apparently after Beijing they burned their riding outfits so nobody could find out what materials they were made from.

Hoy was the only one in his race wearing an aero helmet and while we were using those muscle heating pads for all our racers the dutch were passing round an electronic blanket to keep their muscles warm! It's little things like that that added up over 4 years have prob made the difference - but of course if you want to be seen as some radical thinker for saying that they are on drugs then feel free. I'm sure if team gb lawyers read this you will have ample opportunity to repeat your claims and give your evidence.
Report Biscuit1979 August 8, 2012 9:43 AM BST
The Manchester Velodrome being built for the 2002 Commonwealth games must be a big reason for the improvement as well. Before then i think i'm right in saying there was no such top quality facility in this country. So that being built inevitably led to more people taking up the sport, and along with everything marychain has posted they are pretty much your reasons as to why British cycling rules the roost.

Got to laugh at RAPS, love to know what drugs he thinks the likes of Trott and Clancy are on. Chris Hoy has done remarkably well to go undetected through 4 Olympics as well hasn't he?!

Another velodrome is being built in Scotland for the 2014 Commonwealth games so no doubt you'll see increased interest and people taking up the sport up there too.

Nobody can be 100% sure about anything to do with drugs in sport but on the basis of logic I think it almost certain that the reason why team GB have done so well in cycling and inded rowing is down to the professional culture within the sports which is incessantly seeking legal tiny improvements which when added up can be significant and can make that difference between winning and losing.

Utterly brilliant post.

Like I've said before, come in here slinging around ill-informed comment about 'the Juice', trying to look like someone in the know.

Get fronted by someone who wants names, dates, personnell and fine details and you get a resounding silence or worse still, 'ah, just wait for 20 years until the technology catches up'.

I can speak with a minor level of knowledge (Sports Science dissertation on Drug Abuse in Sport) of the subject and some insights into what GB Rowing has done to combat drugs cheats (which is what these people are) in their sport.

It would be dumb to say 100% of athletes are clean - who will ever know to that extent? if a rower failed a drugs test, it  wouldn't be a case of them handing back their medal; it would be more a question of whether they could first crawl out of the lake at Caversham following the beat-down administered to them by their team mates.

I'll let Mr Wiggins' response to a similar accusation a few weeks back help you to clear this one up.

'I say they're just f****** w******. I cannot be doing with people like that.

'It justifies their own bone-idleness because they can't ever imagine applying themselves to do anything in their lives.

'It's easy for them to sit under a pseudonym on Twitter and write that sort of s***, rather than get off their a**** in their own lives and apply themselves and work hard at something and achieve something.

'And that's ultimately it. C****

The case I always remember was Sharon Davies our swimmer who came second to an East German who was drugged up and who I now beleive is dead ,shouldnt the question be how many more medals would GB have won if the sport was as clean as it is today?  No way are GB leading the world in drug taking and we would have had less medals than we have if drug taking was rife, for sure.  Look at the countries who are not doing so well today and you will find the cheats.

Look at the history of doping. Its not just about winning , its about money.... masses of sponsorship, media deals etc....

You see people above posting about how they are always caught eventually....

Rubbish imho. David Millar didnt test positive (His house was raided), Marion Jones didnt test positive, Armstrong never tested positive (So far and or not in the public domain)....the list goes on.

The idea of British atheletes standing on the high moral ground and being ashamed of potential positive is ridiculous......No body cares after the event about someone testing positive.
