It was nothing like what is done in the 10000m on track. obviously he'd done his other disciplines first and i've no idea what he could do just running 10000 tho i feel it's extrememly unlikely he'd ever become a medal contender at world champs/olympics.

Brownlee walked for the last ten seconds of his run.
He was running over far more difficult terrain, and he had previously swam a mile or two, and cycled several miles.
Unbelievable performance. Hat's off.

Obviously Brownlee's performance was exceptional. I'm sure no one disputes that. I maintain he'd still have no chance in a track 10000m if he switched priorities. No point looking at Mo's time as it was a totally different type of race.

agreed. distances of the runs in triathlon are usually short/inaccurately measured. i remember a triathlete running a 29min 10km in a triathlon but couldn't break 30.30 on the track

i very much doubt the the triathlon run was exactly 10k as they have to follow set tracks around hyde park and u probably cant put the finish line exactly where 10k would be

I'm pretty sure that it was a true 10K, they can adjust the point where they do a hairpin and run back the other way to make it exact, also move the finish line a few metres if need be. He was 1min 23seconds slower than Farah, on the road with all the twists and turns can't help either (especially doing that hairpin 4 times) and throwing away probably 10 seconds at the end. I think he could cut it at 10,000m, maybe run close to 27 minutes at best, but wouldn't be a world beater. What makes him and his brother special is being able to swim and ride a bike like that too

As well as the terrain, the ups and downs, the ramps, he also had hairpin bends to cope with, and he didnt have the nice bouncy track Farrah had. An unbelievable time all things considered.

what time do you think he would have done over the same course without doing the swim and bike first? I reckon he would take at least 5 seconds per kilometre or 50 seconds

He has a strong running pedigree being a previous national fell running champion. There are a lot of aspects to consider ( flattish road running is slightly quicker than track running) but the short answer is that he would almost certainly be international class as a track or long distance runner and could probably reach a final at an olympic 10000 if that was his sole aim. Which begs the question why you would want to be an also ran when you can be the best in your chosen sport?
It is dangerous to assume too much in terms of taking time off even after the other disciplines. One of the key things which an elite triathlete trains on is called brick sessions which are a form of training designed to minimise the disruption of going from cycling to running which predominantly use different muscle groups and is very difficult for the untrained. Thus it is perfectly possible for an elite triathlete to run reasonably close to his overall single event best despite being in a triathlon.

there can be no doubt with his current level of fitness and basic ability he could find a distance at which he could excel - might be the marathon - if he trained solely for that
we will probably never know unless he gets bored of winning triathlons and seeks new challenges

For those that are interested, the triathlon courses on the international are set up with a 10% margin of distance variation to 10k. That is from speaking to people within the ITU who measure and set up the courses. It's not like the marathon where they do it to the nearest cm.
And Ali Brownlee would be competitive at a UK level, but not at a world level. Would be lapped once or perhaps twice by the top guys in the 10000m.

Even if the running course is measured within AIMS road running standards it will be shorter than a 10,000m track race. Becoming a world class 10k track runner you also need a vicious 400m kick, lacking it you end up like the Eritrean Tadesse never winning medals.
Besides as a former cyclist, road runner and triathlete I can tell you, that doing a mere running training with the necessary distances you'll be much more injury prone than doing a triathlon training schedule, which also may be a limiting factor to a running career!

Alistair Brownlee ran in the 2009 European U-23 cross country championships in Dublin and finished 48th. He wouldn't have a hope of even qualifying for the Olympic 10k.

and that was 3 years ago (he's still a young man now) and he wouldn't necessarily do the 10km, he could do the marathon
and cross country has nothing to do with track racing

Cross country running has a lot more relevance than a triathlon. Every runner in the 10k final will have a background in cross country. Injuries or not, he has never shown the talent to be a top class runner. He wouldn't have a hope in the marathon either.

Alistair's 10k PB is 29:15. As I said yesterday, a minute difference in the top echelons of sport is massive. Alistair is a fantastic triathlete but he simply wouldn't compete on the track. Neither does he want to.
